Book News: My So-Called Afterlife by Tamsyn Murray

Posted on Friday, July 10th, 2009 by Leah

Tamsyn Murray’s debut teen novel My So-Called Afterlife will be released in February 2010 and sounds like a really great read. I haven’t read any YA books, as I don’t have any, but I know many people love them and there are some I’d love to read - if I could find them! The synopsis for My So-Called Afterlife sounds great and reads:

So, you’re a fifteen year old girl on your way to THE best New Year’s party in London. Dressed to kill, you’ve got a certain school heartthrob on your mind and you won’t rest until you’ve snogged him to within an inch of his life. And if the rest of the school happens to see it and marvels at your general fabulousness, so much the better.

The next thing you know, you’re staring down at your lifeless body and suddenly, everything you know has changed. For Lucy Shaw, the phrase life’s a bitch and then you die never seemed more true.

Trapped haunting the men’s toilets on the corner of Carnaby Street, Lucy whiles away the time rating her visitors according to their bathroom habits. By the time mid-twenties Jeremy walks into her squalid home, she’s crawling the walls for a two-way conversation. So when she realises Jeremy can actually see her, she’s determined to make him a regular visitor. Soon he’s bringing Lucy magazines, newspapers and – most importantly – details of what’s been happening on her favourite TV shows.

Jeremy figures out way to get her out of the toilet and before you can say ‘social networking’ Lucy has hooked up with fellow ghosts Hep (a poltergeist with anger management issues) and Ryan (officially the most gorgeous boy EVER). With their help, Lucy gets the answers to some of her burning questions (Just how do you snog the boy of your dreams when you don’t actually have any lips?) But when they get close to tracking down Lucy’s killer, things take a turn for the worse. Will she lose everything she cares about again?

Book Review: Beachcombing by Maggie Dana

Posted on Friday, July 10th, 2009 by Leah

maggiedanabeachcombingJillian Hunter treasures her independence. She’s raised two sons by herself, launched a small business, and restored a tumbledown beach cottage in Connecticut. But when a trip to London reunites her with Colin an old flame she hasn t seen in thirty-five years Jill falls for him all over again.

Love makes Jill reckless. This could be her chance for a new beginning. But Colin isn’t quite the boy she remembers and she ends up risking everything she’s worked for her business, her home, and her two closest friends to make a life with him. And when she’s faced with the risk of losing Colin as well, Jill is forced to take an uncomfortably close look at the woman she’s allowed herself to become.

Funny, sophisticated, and wise, Beachcombing is a coming-of-middle-age story about girlfriends when you re no longer a girl, about growing up when you re already grown up, and the price you re willing to pay for the love of your life.

Book News: Married With Baggage by Elise Chidley

Posted on Friday, July 10th, 2009 by Leah

Chloe loved Elise Chidley’s debut novel, which sounds great. Elise’s second novel Married With Baggage is released on the 19th November and sounds like a really great read, too. The synopsis reads:

‘She’d never dreamt she’d wind up being a mum before she had a baby.’

When Annie was swept off her feet by handsome widower Simon, she willingly promised to have and to hold all that he held dear, including his daughter, Lydia. Lydia’s mother died years before in a sailing accident and it’s clear from the off that the young girl doesn’t welcome her new stepmother.

As a lucrative job offer for Simon forces them all to decamp to America, Annie has a lot to learn. How do you fit in in a close-knit US town? What makes her daughter tick? And how do you try to convince your new husband that he’s done the right thing in marrying in haste?

For every woman who’s had to juggle the complexities of step-parenting, this sharp and funny look at the world of modern famililes will ring very true indeed.

If you like the sound of this, read our review of Elise’s debut novel The Wrong Sort of Wife.

Book Review: This Charming Man by Marian Keyes

Posted on Friday, July 10th, 2009 by Chloe

marianthischarmingmanThis Charming Man is based on four very different women, all living in Ireland and whose lives have been changed dramatically by one very charming man, Paddy de Courcy.

Paddy is a politician and thinks of himself as a bit of a cad who can get any woman he wants. But Lola, Marnie, and Grace know the truth about Paddy.

That he isn’t as nice as his public persona leads people to believe, that he hasn’t any respect for women, and most importantly, they’re all united by a secret which just might come back to bite Mr de Courcy on the bottom! (more…)
