Book News: The Pretend Wife by Bridget Asher

Posted on Friday, May 29th, 2009 by Leah

bridgetasherthepretendwifeBridget Asher, a pseudonym of Julianna Baggot, has her second novel out on June 11th called The Pretend Wife. Her first novel under the name was My Husband’s Sweethearts. The synopsis for The Pretend Wife says:

For Gwen Merchant, love has always been doled out in little packets—from her father, a marine biologist who buried himself in work after her mother’s death; and from her husband, Peter, who’s always been respectable and safe. But when an old college boyfriend, the irrepressible Elliot Hull, invites himself back into Gwen’s life, she starts to remember a time when love was an ocean.

What does Elliot want? In fact, he has a rather surprising proposition: he wants Gwen to become his wife. His pretend wife. Just for a few days. To accompany him to his family’s lake house for the weekend so that he can fulfill his dying mother’s last wish. Reluctantly Gwen agrees to play along—with her husband Peter’s full support. It’s just one weekend—what harm could come of it?

But as Gwen is drawn into Elliot’s quirky, wonderful family—his astonishingly wise and open mother, his warm and welcoming sister, and his adorable, precocious niece—she starts questioning everything she’s ever expected from love. And as she begins to uncover a few secrets about her own family, it suddenly looks like a pretend relationship just might turn out to be the most real thing she’s ever known.

It sounds a really great read and I love the cover for t.

Book Review: Whose Life Is It Anyway? by Sinead Moriarty

Posted on Friday, May 29th, 2009 by Leah

whos-life-is-it-anyway-smIt’s tricky for Niamh O’Flaherty, growing up in a North London home that’s a shrine to all things Irish. But it’s even trickier being an adult and realizing that her family expects her to settle down with a nice Irish lad, especially now that she’s living in Dublin.

When Niamh finally meets the love of her life he is the last person she would expect to fall for her. Pierre is older and an intellectual, but she loves his ability to laugh at himself, his calmness and strength of character, and, of course, his stunning looks.

There’s just one problem: if Pierre’s parents — Jean and Fleur — are sniffy about their pride and joy hooking up with a girl who writes a fluffy newspaper column, her parents, Mick and Annie, are going to go ballistic when they hear that their daughter intends to marry someone who couldn’t be less Irish if he tried . . .

Author of the Week: Katie Fforde

Posted on Thursday, May 28th, 2009 by Leah

Because we have quite a few Author Interviews, I take my time deciding which to use every week. This week’s Author of the Week and whose Author Interview will be posted tomorrow is Katie Fforde. Here is a small biography from fantasticfiction.co.uk:

Katie Fforde lives in Gloucestershire with her husband and some of her three children. Her hobbies are ironing and housework but, unfortunately, she has almost no time for them as she feels it is her duty to keep a close eye on the afternoon chat shows.

We love Katie here at chicklitreviews, me especially, and I have all of her novels bar Flora’s Lot and Living Dangerously. Out of her 15 novels, bar the two I don’t have, I only have Wild Designs and katielovelettersWedding Season that I haven’t already read. Her 15th, Love Letters, is out next month and you can read all about it here. I for one can’t wait for Love Letters and will try my best to get it as soon as it is released.

Katie’s books are always enjoyable and are always humourous and you always know you’ll get a good read and good laugh out of her novels. My personal favourites are: Paradise Fields, The Rose Revived, Artistic Licence, Highland Fling & Restoring Grace but I love her others, too.

I also love the covers of her novels. All of her book covers have been re-designed and are really beautiful. You can visit Katie at her website.

So… what do you think of Katie - what is your favourite of her novels?

And can we also say good luck and congratulations to Katie on her impending grandmother-hood!

Book News: The Good Bride Guide by Matt Dunn

Posted on Thursday, May 28th, 2009 by Chloe

Author Matt Dunn is back this autumn with his latest book, The Good Bride Guide. I have read 3 of Matt’s previous books - The Ex-Boyfriends Handbook and Ex-Girlfriends United - as well as From Here to Paternity and each were brilliant and hilarious. His newest book looks to follow suit, and here’s the synopsis:

“Ben Grant is fed up with always meeting the wrong girl. Having just celebrated his 29th birthday by being dumped by his 29th girlfriend, he decides he can’t go on like this. Why can’t he be as blissfully happy as his best friend Ashif, about to marry the beautiful Prithi, a bride chosen for him by his parents? Suddenly Ben has a great idea: why not ask his own parents to do the same for him? But while Ben’s parents see this as the perfect opportunity to set their son on the right path to matrimonial bliss, it soon becomes clear that Ben’s idea of the kind of woman he wants to settle down with is quite different from that of his somewhat traditional mum and dad. Following a series of disastrous dates, Ben starts to realize that he wouldn’t let his parents pick him out a shirt to wear, let alone a woman to marry. But when Ben finally meets the girl he thinks might be ‘the one’, he realizes that maybe he does have something to learn from his mum and dad after all. Can he learn the art of romance from his parents and land the girl of his dreams?”

The book is released through Pocket Books on 5th October. Look out for it then!
