Chick Lit Classics: Something Borrowed by Martina Reilly

Posted on Thursday, September 30th, 2010 by Leah

Chick Lit Classics is a regular feature on Chick Lit Reviews where we highlight the books we feel are classics of the chick lit genre. Feel free to discuss our choices in the comments section!

This week, after reading Martina Reilly’s latest novel A Moment Like Forever (it’s fab and we’ll be reviewing it next week), I’ve picked us one of her earlier novels for our Chick Lit Classic! Something Borrowed is the first of Martina’s books I read and I was completely absorbed by Vicky’s story! It even made me cry, and it’s a book I would happily re-read and one I recommend all Chick Lit lovers read!

Vicky McCarthy’s curiosity has finally got the better of her. Adopted as a baby, she is now determined to trace her birth mother. Her family wish she would leave the past alone, which is just as well: Vicky is in danger of uncovering some shocking secrets. But, hoping that the past will help her determine the future, she sets out to find the truth. And if that doesn’t cause friction enough, there’s trouble at work when a new face appears: Ed O’Neill, whom Vicky is convinced is being groomed for her job. The spark between them is instant - they can’t stand each other. Yet it’s a thin line between love and hate, and Vicky is learning that people aren’t always what they seem.

Book Deal: Kate Harrison signs YA deal

Posted on Thursday, September 30th, 2010 by Chloe

Kate Harrison, author of the successful Secret Shopper series, has signed a 3 book deal for YA novels, the first of which is due to be released in Summer 2011. The first book is called ‘Soulbeach’, and is part of a trilogy.

Kate kindly gave us this quote about her new deal:

“‘I had the idea about two years ago but as the Secret Shopper books have been keeping me very busy, I didn’t start writing till the end of last year. It’s hugely exciting being able to take on darker themes, though I hope that readers who enjoy my adult books might enjoy Soul Beach too. In my adult books, my characters search for happiness. In the YA books, they search for a murderer!

‘I’m currently putting the finishing touches to both the first Soul Beach book and the final Secret Shopper, The Secret Shopper Affair, which has a home made theme. So I keep switching from crafty to creepy. I do love my job!’”

Book Review: The Badness of King George by Judith Summers

Posted on Wednesday, September 29th, 2010 by Leah

After Judith Summers’ latest relationship breaks up, in part due to her pet Cavalier George, and her son Joshua heads off for University, Judith’s life is looking a bit empty and she’s suffering from ‘empty nest’ syndrome. A chance encounter on Hampstead Heath with a fellow dog-owner who adopted a dog from Many Tears Animal Rescue. After her step-daughter then adopts a dog from the same centre, Judith browses the website and decides to head down to Wales to visit the centre in person.

Once there, Judith learns that not only can you adopt dogs from the centre, but you can also foster dogs whilst the centre looks for new homes for the dogs. Judith thinks it sounds like a fantastic idea and decides to go for it, hoping it’ll cure the empty feeling she currently has. George, though, isn’t too keen on the idea and when Judith gets her first foster dog, there’s no telling what George will do to keep Judith to himself…

‘Not Exactly Chick Lit But…’: Woath It? Coase Ah am, Pet by Cheryl Kerl

Posted on Wednesday, September 29th, 2010 by Leah

‘Not Exactly Chick Lit But…’ is a new feature on Chick Lit Reviews highlighting some books that are not exactly Chick Lit (hence the title) but that our Chick Lit readers will probably enjoy! Let me know if there’s a book you would suggest for my new feature!

Our latest book that we’re highlight in our new feature of books that aren’t Chick Lit is Woath It? Coase Ah Am, Pet? by Cheryl Kerl, which is out on October 14th October 2010. It sounds absolutely hilarious and is a parody on Cheryl Cole, written like a proper Geordie! It might take you a while to decipher the synopsis, but here it is anyway (Good luck, says the Geordie herself):

‘Hei, Mam Ah’m ganna be a stor’ said a young Cheryl Tweety to hor Mam one day, following a bonny baby competition in hor native Newcastle. An tell yerz this leik, she wuzzen wrong! Noo aall grern up as Cheryl Kerl, shiz the peepils’ princess an shiz everywhor yerz look pet. On TV, radieau, magazines an billboadz; just aboot the biggest star in the UK man! And ask hor what she thinks aboot it an she’ll jus flash yerz tha big smeel and likelee sey ‘Its mint man!’ in that Geordie accent so loved the world over. In short shiz fulfilled hor destinee.

Noo as queen of aall she surveys, faw the foast teim in this book she’ll give you a personal insight into what she thinks aboot aall sortz a stuff an tha. Covering topics as divoase as the music biz tuh jeans, the opera tuh fashion icons, itz aall between these pages. Cheryl opens her heart and soul, and pulling no punches tells it leik it is, man woman man. Find oot tha being a supahstor’s nut just aboot havin the teim of yerz leef gaddin aboot at fillum premiers an tha. Beheend tha smeel lies a leefteim a hoad graft an detomanation. This is Cheryl’s take on modun leef. Her own unique pawspective on anything an evreething.

    Chick Flick Tuesday: Pretty Woman

Posted on Tuesday, September 28th, 2010 by Danielle

Chick Flick Tuesday highlights the best chick flicks in the movie world as well as bringing you news on upcoming chick flick releases as well as letting you all know about which chick lit books are being made into chick flick movies!

Pretty Woman is the quintessential Julia Roberts movie, her first big break into the world of acting and film. Without a doubt, one of my all time favorites as well. Scenes like the one on Rodeo drive in which she calls a sales person to task for having lost her sales the day previous are what make this Chick Flick a classic. Not only that, but the story of a girl in a bad situation given a second chance at life with non-other than prince charming is one of the many aspects of the movie that make it so endearing. If you haven’t seen it, I’d just have to ask, why not?

“Vivian (Julia Roberts) is a spirited, streetwise diamond in the rough when she meets shrewd, no-nonsense billionaire Edward Lewis (Richard Gere). It’s a chance encounter that turns a week long business arrangement into a timeless rags-to-riches romance.”

    Author Interview: Rachel Hore

Posted on Tuesday, September 28th, 2010 by Leah

I recently read Rachel Hore’s latest novel A Place of Secrets and I was completely blown away by how much I enjoyed the novel. It had a fantastic mix of history, romance, and family secrets and anyone who loves all of those things will undoubtedly love the book! I got the chance to ask Rachel some questions and here are her answers!

    1. Can you tell us about your latest novel A Place of Secrets in your own words?

Two women, though divided by centuries of time, are linked by a special place: a tower in a Norfolk forest used to view the night sky. Each is trapped in her own particular set of circumstances, and must find the way to free herself. Jude is an auctioneer, who is mourning her husband. She comes to Starbrough Hall to value a collection of 18th century astronomical instruments and learns the tragic story of Esther Wickham, the astronomer’s adopted daughter. I liked the idea that a place can be magical because of all the things that have happened there in history.

    2. Are you currently working on a new novel? Can you tell us anything about it?

I’ve written half of my next novel and expect to finish it in the spring. It starts in Cornwall before the Second World War before moving on to all sorts of places, and is about misplaced faithfulness and undying love.

Book News: Trapped by Brooke Morgan

Posted on Tuesday, September 28th, 2010 by Leah

Brooke Morgan’s second novel, Trapped, is due for release on 14th October 2010 and sounds like a fantastic thriller. I’m quite the fan of books with darker elements and this one definitely appeals! The striking cover is fantastic and I can’t wait for it to be released. Here is the synopsis:

Everyone has to live with their past, but no one should be haunted by it…Ellie Walters is determined to get back on her feet after the break-up of her marriage. Now living on Cape Cod with her increasingly angry and troubled teenage son, Tim, she tentatively believes they can build a new life together. And when Ellie finds herself falling for her new neighbour’s son, Joe, she feels she can at last move on. Until, one day, elements connected to a tragic event in Ellie’s past - an event she has never been able to come to terms with - start appearing. It seems that someone is determined to make her suffer, all over again. Whilst a misunderstanding drives a rift between her and Joe and her relationship with Tim threatens to deteriorate completely, a confused and frightened Ellie seems powerless to stop what seems increasingly like a terrifying campaign of persecution. And Ellie is faced with the horrifying possibility that she’ll be trapped in this nightmare for ever…
