Author Article: Me & My Novels by Sharon Owens

Posted on Saturday, February 27th, 2010 by Leah

After enjoying her latest book, The Seven Secrets of Happiness, we were told that Sharon Owens would like to write an author article for the site where she discusses what it’s like not to conform to your typical author-ly stereotype. Enjoy!

People sometimes say they are very surprised when they meet me for the first time because they’ve been expecting a more mature lady with bouffant hair, kitten heels and a floral jacket. And they’ve also been expecting a very maternal sort of character with bags of advice on love and relationships, and cookery tips.

And then I turn up in my Dr Martens boots, Morrissey T-shirt, skinny jeans and poker-straight hair, and order a pint of lager. What can I say? I’m 41 but my greatest passion in life is rock, Punk and indie music. I love listening to German rockers Rammstein at full volume and I love the super-kooky Yeah Yeah Yeahs though my heart will always belong to Morrissey. The sound of his singing calms my soul. I’m not a foodie either, preferring a plain old cheddar sandwich to most gourmet food, and I wouldn’t know a good bottle of wine from a bottle of Sarson’s vinegar. I am a confirmed romantic though and I’ve been in love with my husband Dermot since 1984. As for the relationship advice: if it doesn’t feel right then it probably isn’t.

I was born in Northern Ireland in 1968 and grew up in the small market town of Omagh during the worst years of the Troubles but luckily my rebellious nature saved me from becoming too obsessed with it all. To this day I refuse to be told how to vote, where to live, where to worship and who I should socialise with. I take people as I find them, regardless of their status or background, and hopefully they do the same for me. I like being an individual and it annoys me when I hear people talking about “two communities living side-by-side”. We’re all just one great big human community, aren’t we?

I suppose I’m a bit wary of national culture generally. I much prefer the international cultures of art, sculpture, printmaking, poetry, literature, music and fashion. Those are the mediums that unite people. I believe absolutely in freedom of speech; there are so many means of self-expression that aggression of any kind is simply unnecessary in my book. As for my novels, well, I do enjoy a gentle love story. Yes, I love loud rock music but I don’t like horror films, gratuitously gory thrillers or tedious 1,000-page whodunits. I like a bit of escapism when I curl up in bed with a book. I like a bit of life experience, a saucy scene or two, plenty of laughs and a happy ending. So those are the sort of books I write.

I don’t feel embarrassed about being described as a chick-lit author. The rebel in me rather enjoys being a chick-lit author who owns original vinyl records by The Clash and XTC. My style icons are Morrissey, Margaret Rutherford as Miss Marple, and grown-up Goth couple Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter. My favourite author is Janet McNeill. I write every book to the best of my ability and then I send them out into the world, like butterflies. Writing isn’t just therapy for me; I write for the enjoyment of readers, romantics, rebels and bookworms everywhere.

Book Review: Chocolate Wishes by Trisha Ashley

Posted on Friday, February 26th, 2010 by Leah

Chocolate maker Chloe Lyon has recently moved to Sticklepond along with her grandfather Grumps, brother Jake and Zillah, her Grandmother’s cousin. Her business Chocolate Wishes is going from strength to strength and the only part of Chloe’s life that isn’t perfect is her love life. Her heart was broken as a teenager by Raffy Sinclair, who went on to become a huge rock star, and then years later, Chloe found herself being jilted practically at the altar. However, when a new vicar arrives in town, it seems as if Chloe’s life is about to get a little bit more difficult because the vicar is none other than Raffy Sinclair. Is Raffy still the same Raffy who broke Chloe’s heart, or is it possible that he’s changed? Better yet, is Chloe even over Raffy’s betrayal?

Book Cover: The (Im)Perfect Girlfriend by Lucy-Anne Holmes

Posted on Friday, February 26th, 2010 by Leah

Lucy-Anne Holmes’s debut novel was very well received within the chick lit community so I’m sure all her fans will be thrilled that her second book, The (Im)Perfect Girlfriend, is due out on 6th August 2010. Sarah Sargeant fans will also be thrilled as she’s coming back, too! Here’s the synopsis:

We kissed until it became necessary to stop so that we could breathe, by which time my lips were so swollen it looked like I’d been pleasuring a brillo pad. We grinned at each other again and I felt the urge to utter something brilliantly intellectual. ‘Have I mentioned that I’m hopelessly in love with you?’

Actress Sarah Sargeant has finally landed the perfect boyfriend. But as she leaves London for LA, Sarah finds herself morphing from the perfect girlfriend, baby voicing ‘i love you’s, into a nutty one who throws phones and screams a lot.

Where did it all go wrong? Was it the photo of a semi-naked ex-girlfriend doing a downward dog she found in her boyfriend’s filofax? Or maybe it’s the steamy sex scene she films with the handsomest man in the world, ever. Laugh-out-loud funny and brutally honest, The (Im)Perfect Girlfriend is the story of one woman’s search for her happy ever after. It is a novel that firmly establishes Lucy Anne Holmes as one of the best writers of romantic comedy today.

Book Review: Revenge by Sharon Osbourne

Posted on Thursday, February 25th, 2010 by Leah

Amber and Chelsea Stone aren’t exactly what you’d call close – they might have grown up together but their childhood’s couldn’t have been more different. Amber was the apple of her mother Margaret’s eye while she had a real disdain for elder daughter Chelsea, who just adores her father. When Chelsea gets an acting part Amber was auditioning for, the rivalry begins and nothing will be the same again.

Amber’s career then takes another direction and goes off in a big way, while Chelsea’s begins to flounder and she loses her way a bit. Their mother Margaret only seems to care for Amber, and this grates on Chelsea. So when a man decides to come between the sisters and have them vying for the same thing, will they do the sisterly thing and help each other or is it every Stone for themselves? And just who is going to take the ultimate revenge?

Cover Wars: Daughters of Fortune by Tara Hyland

Posted on Thursday, February 25th, 2010 by Chloe

Tara Hyland’s debut novel Daughters of Fortune is due out on March 18th, but Tara is already having her book published over the Atlantic too in America! Tara posted the cover of her American book on her website, and I thought I could use it for a cover wars feature as I already know which I prefer! The UK one (left) is far superior in my mind, its far more attractive, and I would definitely pick this one up over the American cover (on the right). Which do you like?

“William Melville’s daughters are heiresses to the world’s most exclusive fashion dynasty. Beautiful and rich, they are envied by all. But behind the glittering facade of their lives, each girl hides a dark secret that threatens to tear their family apart. Smart, ambitious Elizabeth knows how to manipulate every man she meets, except the one who counts: her father. Gentle, naive Caitlin, the illegitimate child, struggling to fit into a world of privilege while staying true to herself. Stunning, spoilt Amber, the party girl with a weakness for bad boys; more fragile than anyone realises. As each of them seeks to carve out her own destiny, Elizabeth, Caitlin and Amber face difficult choices, which will take them in wildly different directions. But as old wounds resurface and threaten to destroy the foundations of the Melville empire, their paths will cross again. Because the simple truth is that, no matter how far you go, you cannot escape the claims of family.”

However, there’s one problem - Angelica, Owen’s teenage daughter who seems hellbent on hating Frankie and making their relationship a misery. Industry Interview: Sherise Hobbs, Headline

Posted on Wednesday, February 24th, 2010 by Leah

When Chloe and I first mooted the point about interviewing those that work within the publishing industry, we didn’t really know what the response was going to be. We know that those who work in the publishing industry are incredibly busy so we were thrilled when we got such a great response. Here is our first Industry Interview with the fab Sherise Hobbs who works at Headline.

    1. Can you tell us, in as little detail or as much detail as you wish, what exactly it is you do within the publishing industry?

I’m an Associate Publisher in the Fiction department at Headline Publishing Group. This means I get to look after a number of fantastic authors and I’m also one of the editors responsible for acquiring exciting new authors.

    2. How did you come to work as a book editor?

After my English degree, I floundered around for a little while trying to work out what I wanted to do. A spell doing work experience in the Fiction department of a large trade publisher made me realise that my dream job did indeed exist – all I then had to do was persuade someone to employ me! Luckily, soon after that, I got a job as an Editorial Assistant at Headline, and I’ve been with this brilliant company ever since.

Book Cover: Desire by Louise Bagshawe

Posted on Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010 by Leah

I’m a huge fan of Louise Bagshawe and I absolutely loved her last book Passion. I was thrilled when she told us on Twitter about her 2010 release, then titled Revenge. That book is now called Desire and has a beautiful cover to boot. It’s due out on April 15th and here is the synopsis:

Lisa Costello is leading a charmed life – until she wakes up the morning after her glamorous Thailand wedding to find her new husband Josh dead in their bed, the murder weapon in her hand. She remembers learning at the wedding that Josh had been unfaithful, but she certainly doesn’t remember killing him. As Lisa flees the scene for Europe, ex-FBI trainee Sam Murray is on her trail. Catching up with her, he’s quickly convinced she’s been set up, and they start to work out which of movie producer Josh’s many enemies could be behind the hit. It’s a race against time to unearth the truth and keep Lisa out of jail – or gunned down by the professional assassin tailing them. And the danger only adds to the excitement of the passion brewing between them…
