    Chick Flick Tuesday: LBD Style!

Posted on Tuesday, December 7th, 2010 by Leah

This week we’re doing things a little differently with our Chick Flick Tuesday. In honour of Little Black Dress week I’ve picked three Little Black Dress books that I think would make very good movies! Enjoy!

Just Look At Me Now by Nell Dixon (I like make-over books and movies and this one would work really well.)

Tia’s top beauty tip: apply heavy make-up carefully to prevent any cracks from showing…Life is fabulous for Tia Carpenter. She has it all, money, looks, a great job as the beauty expert at stylish Platinum magazine and, at last, the attention of her unrequited high school love, Josh Banks. But Tia has a secret — back at school she was Barbara Baker, overweight, crooked teeth, frizzy hair and no fashion sense. Cosmetic dentistry, losing seven stones in weight and a complete makeover later, Tia has successfully erased her past life as Big Barb, tub of lard, until the day Juliet Gold, the bane of her teenage existence, arrives to work at the magazine. Juliet always got everything she ever wanted, and now she wants both Tia’s job and Josh. Tia will have to use every makeover trick she’s ever learned to stop Juliet from uncovering her past and stealing her man.

Honey Trap by Julie Cohen (I’ve never actually seen someone who’s a honey trap in a movie so that’s why I chose this one!)

Private investigator Sophie Tennant has realised knowing everyone’s dirty little secrets isn’t that much fun. Retraining as an aromatherapist should rebalance her karma — or so she thinks, until she goes on tour as resident de-stresser with a rock band whose moody, magnetic frontman Dominick Steele is none other than her very first honey trap. Yes, the man she pretended to seduce in order to shop the evidence to his broken-hearted wife, spelling the end of their marriage. Dominic may be a reformed character these days, but Sophie hasn’t forgotten the games he used to play! and he certainly remembers Sophie. A little bit too well!

Confessions of an Air Hostess by Marisa Mackle (I loved this book and it would be a fab rom-com).

Poor Annie. Dumped by her boyfriend via text this morning while en route to the airport, she can think of better things to do than stand on a plane demonstrating emergency procedure and pointing out low-level lighting to hundreds of uninterested passengers. But what’s a cabin-crew gal to do when her love life hits turbulence? Annie bravely resolves to keep smiling through her fake tan — while there’s still a plane to catch, there’s still pastures new to discover. And one of these days she’s sure to really meet Mr Right. Isn’t she? A great love story and a fantastic, loveable heroine combine to make this a romantic novel that’s simply not to be missed.

    Chick Flick Tuesday: Love Actually

Posted on Tuesday, November 30th, 2010 by Chloe

Chick Flick Tuesday highlights the best chick flicks in the movie world as well as bringing you news on upcoming chick flick releases as well as letting you all know about which chick lit books are being made into chick flick movies!

What with the snow that has suddenly appeared across Britain this week, I’m really very festive all of a sudden, and it makes me want to dig out all the old Christmas movies that I love watching year after year! Love Actually is one such movie… it’s Christmassy, it’s romantic, it’s funny and it’s just so watchable I know that I’ll see it at least a few times over the festive season! It has an all star cast from Hugh Grant to Andrew Lincoln to Keira Knightley and the wonderful Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman. It’s director Richard Curtis’ debut film and an absolute triumph - I love it!

“With Love Actually, Curtis orchestrates a minor miracle of romantic choreography, guiding a brilliant cast of stars and newcomers as they careen toward love and holiday cheer in London, among them the Prime Minister (Hugh Grant) who’s smitten with his caterer (Martine McCutcheon); a widower (Liam Neeson) whose young son nurses the ultimate schoolboy crush; a writer (Colin Firth) who falls for his Portuguese housekeeper; a devoted wife and mother (Emma Thompson) coping with her potentially unfaithful husband (Alan Rickman); and a lovelorn American (Laura Linney) who’s desperately attracted to a colleague. There’s more-too much more-as Curtis wraps his Christmas gift with enough happy endings to sweeten a dozen other movies.”

    Chick Flick Tuesday: Notting Hill

Posted on Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010 by Leah

Chick Flick Tuesday highlights the best chick flicks in the movie world as well as bringing you news on upcoming chick flick releases as well as letting you all know about which chick lit books are being made into chick flick movies!

Ali McNamara’s wonderful book From Notting Hill With Love… Actually is due out this week and I thought this would be the perfect time to highlight the wonderful film that is Notting Hill. It’s the kind of film that everybody has seen at least once and Julia Roberts is fantastic as Anna. I’m not a huge Hugh Grant fan but I liked him in this! It kind of says it all when a film can inspire an entire book and Notting Hill is such a film!

Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant forge memorable chemistry in this charmer about William, an unassuming bookstore owner in London’s Notting Hill section and Anna, a Hollywood actress who, against the odds, are able to fall in love. After Anna wanders into William’s shop while filming on location in London, the two share an instant attraction and find themselves attempting to forge a normal relationship despite Anna’s megawatt star power. Screenwriter Richard Curtis (FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL) has crafted a traditional romantic comedy which is surprisingly frank in it’s depiction of the lives of the rich and famous and the price they pay for success.

Chick Flick Tuesday: Holiday in Handcuffs

Posted on Tuesday, November 16th, 2010 by Leah

Chick Flick Tuesday highlights the best chick flicks in the movie world as well as bringing you news on upcoming chick flick releases as well as letting you all know about which chick lit books are being made into chick flick movies!

This week I’ve chosen a lovely, Christmas-y movie for our Chick Flick Tuesday.I watched Holiday in Handcuffs last Christmas and I thought it was a lovely, sweet movie. It was only a TV movie, shown on ABC Family in America, but you can purchase a DVD copy if you wish! The fact Melissa Joan Hart stars made it all the more perfect for me as I loved her as Sabrina and she’s fantastic in this! Plus there’s a sequel in the works, hurray!

Unlucky in life and love, quirky waitress Trudie (Melissa Joan Hart) takes the holidays — and the law — into her own hands. Unable to brave Christmas with her family as a single woman, Trudie kidnaps restaurant customer David Martin (Mario Lopez) and introduces him to her family as her boyfriend. Unable to escape the family vacation house, David agrees to play along until the police arrive. In the meantime, however, David ponders his own romantic life, and questions if he is falling in love with Trudie despite the unlikely circumstances.

Chick Flick Tuesday: Music and Lyrics

Posted on Tuesday, November 9th, 2010 by Chloe

Chick Flick Tuesday highlights the best chick flicks in the movie world as well as bringing you news on upcoming chick flick releases as well as letting you all know about which chick lit books are being made into chick flick movies!

Good old Hugh Grant. You see his name against a film and you pretty much know it’s going to be a chick flick, don’t you?! This week I’ve picked one of his more recent movies for Chick Flick Tuesday, Music and Lyrics. It stars Hugh and the lovely Drew Barrymore, and the two make a great partnership. This film is really funny because Hugh has to sing, and his role is as a former pop star so there are really laugh out loud moments. There are some nice songs in here too, so there’s something for everyone! It’s not his best film, but he has a good chemistry with the lovely Drew, and overall it is a fun watch!

“Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) is a cynical and self-deprecating former ’80s pop idol who turns down an offer to appear on a reality TV show for has-beens. Instead, he chooses to play the far more dignified nostalgia circuit, and hires the lovely but deeply insecure Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore) to water his plants while he’s away. When Alex is tasked with writing a song for pop starlet Cora (Haley Bennett) in just four days, Sophie reveals herself to be a gifted songwriter and they end up making beautiful music together. Despite this contrived set-up, the film, to its credit, deftly avoids many possible rom-com clichés in favour of organic, character-driven conflicts and comedic situations. As Alex and Sophie fall in love, their relationship begins to mirror the song writing process; they grapple with their creative differences and emotional hang-ups, all the while dealing with the pressures of the music industry.”

    Chick Flick Tuesday: Friends

Posted on Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010 by Chloe

Chick Flick Tuesday highlights the best chick flicks in the movie world as well as bringing you news on upcoming chick flick releases as well as letting you all know about which chick lit books are being made into chick flick movies!

I am actually going to do something a bit different this week simply because I have really appreciated this week just how absolutely brilliant this show is, and how much I miss it! Instead of picking a film this week, I am choosing the entire Friends box set, that’s right, series 1 right through to 10! This show, starring Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc, has become (and rightly so) television history, and it doesn’t matter how many times I watch any of the episodes, they never fail to make me laugh and feel like I really am watching a group of old friends! I was gutted when it ended back in 2001 but now I can relive every episode whenever I want on DVD… this doesn’t stop me watching it on E4 though lol! And who can forget the superb comedy moments ‘Friends’ have given us… remember PIVOT!! PIVOT!!!!!

The show followed the lives of six twenty-something singles-Monica (Courtney Cox), Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow), Joey (Matt LeBlanc), Ross (David Schwimmer), and Chandler (Matthew Perry)-who occupied a trendy New York loft apartment. These were essentially six beautiful people who had probably never known a hard day’s work in their lives, and whose every utterance was a well-crafted witticism. But despite their idealized lifestyles and perfectly coiffed hairdos, there was something annoyingly endearing about them. Viewers could easily relate to their struggles with work, sex, and relationships because these were universal struggles - albeit heightened for comedic effect. From early on it was clear that Friends had successfully tapped into the zeitgeist of its time, and now, 10 series down the line, the show’s broad appeal continues to live on in popular culture.

Chick Flick Tuesday: 50 First Dates

Posted on Tuesday, October 26th, 2010 by Chloe

Chick Flick Tuesday highlights the best chick flicks in the movie world as well as bringing you news on upcoming chick flick releases as well as letting you all know about which chick lit books are being made into chick flick movies!

This week I have picked a 2004 release for Chick Flick, and it stars the lovely Drew Barrymore and the very funny Adam Sandler… it can only be 50 First Dates! I actually didn’t see this movie until last year when it was on TV but I loved it straight away and have now added it to my DVD collection. As well as being very funny, it’s sweet, touching and downright brilliant by the end. The comedy of Drew’s character losing her memory every day and the sweetness of Adam’s falling in love with her despite the problems makes this movie a must-see, and is perfect for rom-com fans!

“In the unforgettable romantic comedy 50 First Dates, love means never having to say, “Who the hell are you?” Marine biologist Henry Roth (Adam Sandler) finds the perfect woman, Lucy Whitmore (Drew Barrymore) and falls head over heels for her. But when he sees her the following day, she hasn’t a clue as to who he is. Lucy suffers from a rare brain disorder that wipes her memory clean every night. Now, with the help of his friend Ula (Rob Schneider), he has to concoct new and increasingly clever ways to meet her and get her to fall for him every single day.”

    Chick Flick Tuesday: Moulin Rouge

Posted on Tuesday, October 19th, 2010 by Danielle

Chick Flick Tuesday highlights the best chick flicks in the movie world as well as bringing you news on upcoming chick flick releases as well as letting you all know about which chick lit books are being made into chick flick movies!

Today’s pick for Chick Flick Tuesday comes from one of my favorite film directors of all time, Baz Luhrmann. Moulin Rouge as well as many others of Luhrmann’s including Strictly Ballroom and Romeo and Juliet are some of mine and my sister’s favorite movies. Moulin Rouge in particular is one I remember singing along with constantly. Featuring music such as “Nature Boy” orginially sung by Nat King Cole, the film not only is beautiful in it’s image and story, but the soundtrack as well. It’s the story of a boy, Christian played by Ewan McGregor, in search of love, in all it’s beauty and truth. When he happens upon the most beautiful girl, a courtesan, Satine played by Nicole Kidman, with a tragic secret. Set at the height of the Bohemian movement, in Paris, nothing is more beautiful than the love they have for one another, no matter how unfortunate their destinies. Their love and tragic tale make this a truly spectacular film, not to be missed.

“A spectacle beyond anything you’ve ever witnessed. An experience beyond everything you’ve ever imagined. Behind the red velvet curtain, the ultimate seduction of your senses is about to begin. Welcome to the Moulin Rouge! Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor sing, dance and scale the heights of passionate abandon in the year’s most talked-about movie from visionary director Baz Luhrmann (William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, Strictly Ballroom). Enter a tantalizing world that celebrates truth, beauty, freedom and above all things, love.”
