Book Review: The Glamorous (Double) Life of Isabel Bookbinder by Holly McQueen (LEAH)

Posted on Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 by Leah

hollymcqueenglamorousdoublelifeisabelbookbinderIsabel Bookbinder might not be leading the most glamorous life ever – measuring column inches at the Saturday Mercury isn’t exactly the job of her dreams – but luckily she’s developed a foolproof plan to change all that.

Reasons to become a bestselling author:

Plentiful opportunities to swish new Super-hair
Sophisticated launch parties (with smoked salmon blinis)
Am bound to captivate the delicious Joe Madison
Can finally prove to father that Really Am Not a Waster

    Potential setbacks:

Don’t yet have ‘Yoko’ bag, as carried by arch rival Gina D… or honed size-eight figure (useful for interviews)
Hmm. Am inadvertently at the centre of a major political sex scandal
Paparazzi are doorstepping my parents and boring boyfriend Russell
Haven’t actually got round to putting pen to paper yet

Admittedly some of the setbacks are a little daunting, but Isabel’s sure that a woman of her ingenuity – and creativity – can find a way …

Book Cover: The Mistress by Martine McCutcheon

Posted on Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 by Chloe

Back in early May, we posted the news that singer and actress Martine McCutcheon is releasing her first book, The Mistress. The cover has finally been released, and I think it looks great. In case you missed it before, here’s the synopsis:

““Mandy is turning 30 and has a lot of love to give, but that special person has so far eluded her. Then, at her birthday party with close friends at the Wolseley, Cupid strikes from across a crowded room. It’s love at first sight, but Jake, the man she’s fallen for, is happily married. Mandy is determined to stick to her principles and not enter into such dangerous territory, but her resistance is to prove futile. But can she make it as a mistress? Can it work for someone to love two people? A romance with a twist, “The Mistress”, has an unusual, modern take on what women want.”

Martine’s book is due out on 6th November through PanMacmillan.

Book News: The Good Divorce Guide by Cristina Odone

Posted on Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 by Chloe

Author Cristina Odone is back this year with another new novel called The Good Divorce Guide. I wasn’t too much of a fan of her debut book “The Dilemma’s of Harriet Carew” but maybe this one will fare better for me. Here’s the synopsis:

“The story of feisty mother, Rosie Martin, who is determined to manage her divorce in the best way possible. When Rosie Martin discovers that Jonathan, her husband of 15 years, is having an affair, she feels that her world is falling apart. That is, until she realises that she’s actually fallen out of love with him, too. So Rosie and Jonathan decide to go their separate ways, determined to be civilised about their divorce, for the sake of the children — in short, to have a ‘good divorce’! But even the best of intentions and the most mature of objectives can be no match for external forces. Cue the rest of the world, where divorce is always a dirty word. Everyone and everything seems determined to conspire to make this divorce bitter — the lawyer, the estate agent, the botox man, the friends, not least their respective families! ‘The Good Divorce Guide’ is a touching, witty story about starting afresh and learning to find your own way in life, no matter what anyone says. “

Look out for it in the shops from 15th October published by HarperPress.

Book Review: Mummy Said The F-Word by Fiona Gibson

Posted on Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 by Chloe

Fiona Gibson - Mummy Said the F WordMummy Said The F-Word is a book based around Caitlin Brown, a mother of 3 young children whose life is turned upside down when she accidentally finds out her husband Martin is having an affair with dopey Daisy from the water-cooling firm.

Cait kicks him out, and takes on single parenthood with gusto, relying on her best friend and single-dad Sam to share her woes. Cait soon finds she needs a job, and so ends up working as a agony aunt at her friend Millie’s magazine Bambino, and is convinced her doling out advice is fraud. But soon she starts getting emails from a man who signs his emails ‘R’….
