Book Review: The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella

Posted on Monday, July 27th, 2009 by Leah

sophiekinsellaundomesticgoddess1Samantha is a high-powered lawyer in London. She works all hours, has no home life, and cares only about getting a partnership. She thrives on the pressure and adrenalin. Until one day…she makes a mistake. A mistake so huge, it’ll wreck her career. She walks right out of the office, gets on the first train she sees, and finds herself in the middle of nowhere.

Asking for directions at a big, beautiful house, she is mistaken for the interviewee housekeeper and finds herself being offered the job. They have no idea they’ve hired a Cambridge-educated lawyer with an IQ of 158 - Samantha has no idea how to work the oven. Disaster ensues. It’s chaos as Samantha battles with the washing machine…the ironing board…and attempts to cook a cordon bleu dinner.

But gradually, she falls in love with her new life in a wholly unexpected way. Will her employers ever discover the truth? Will Samantha’s old life ever catch up with her? And if it does…will she want it back?

Book News: Jumping in Puddles by Claire Allan

Posted on Monday, July 27th, 2009 by Chloe

I was sent a copy of Claire Allan’s second book “Feels Like Maybe” by publishers Poolbeg and loved it, so I was thrilled to see Claire has another book coming out in September 2009. Jumping in Puddles is “the story of 4 different characters - each of then lone parents brought together by the wonderful Detta O’Neill in the small Donegal village of Rathinch. The book deals with grief, betrayal, domestic violence and friendship - and yet, it’s still a comedy of sorts!” It sounds like a great read, so look out for it from 24th September.

You can read the first chapter exclusively on Claire’s blog.

Cover Change - The Runaway Wife by Susy McPhee

Posted on Monday, July 27th, 2009 by Chloe

The cover for Susy McPhee’s second book The Runaway Wife has been changed since we last posted about it back in June. The new cover is much brighter and fun, although I think I still prefer the older one which matches the cover of her fantastic debut Husbands and Lies. Here’s the synopsis for The Runaway Wife, due out on 17th September:

“Marion Bishop’s life has fallen apart. Her daughter Hope was killed in a hit-and-run accident six months ago, and now Sam, her beloved husband, has walked out. Left alone with her grief, Marion has begun to contemplate the unthinkable. However, even her suicide plans go awry.

Firstly, she’s all out of pills, and then she’s mugged when she goes out to get more. In fact, it’s the mugging that wakes her up to the fact that she’s perhaps not quite so ready to die as she’d thought: an awkward realisation when you have a knife at your throat. When her mugger’s girlfriend intervenes in the attack, an unlikely friendship blossoms between the two women and Marion begins to contemplate a future. And what of Sam? He may have given up on their marriage but he hasn’t given up on Marion entirely.”

Book News: Should I Stay or Should I Go? by Jessica Adams

Posted on Monday, July 27th, 2009 by Leah

jessadamshouldistayJessica Adams’ next novel Should I Stay or Should I Go? will be released on August 13th and sounds like a great read:

When Alice met Nash, she fell head over heels. Two years later, she can’t quite remember what it was that had seemed so brilliant about him. All they do is argue - especially about money. In a last-ditch attempt to save their relationship, they agree to leave rainy England behind and emigrate to Australia.

But when Alice finds out that Nash has been unfaithful, their plans are ruined and she decides to go to Australia alone. Packing what she can into four suitcases, she heads to Bondi to stay with her cousin. Australia is a very strange place where everything seems upside down and anything over two syllables is abbreviated.

Will Alice ever be able to lose her English inhibitions and relax into the Aussie way of life? Can she ever find a proper job? And, more importantly, will she be able to control herself around Joel, her extremely attractive Australian cousin?

We have a copy, so you can expect our review soon! Keep checking back for that and many more reviews too.
