Book News: My So-Called Afterlife by Tamsyn Murray

Posted on Friday, July 10th, 2009 by Leah

Tamsyn Murray’s debut teen novel My So-Called Afterlife will be released in February 2010 and sounds like a really great read. I haven’t read any YA books, as I don’t have any, but I know many people love them and there are some I’d love to read - if I could find them! The synopsis for My So-Called Afterlife sounds great and reads:

So, you’re a fifteen year old girl on your way to THE best New Year’s party in London. Dressed to kill, you’ve got a certain school heartthrob on your mind and you won’t rest until you’ve snogged him to within an inch of his life. And if the rest of the school happens to see it and marvels at your general fabulousness, so much the better.

The next thing you know, you’re staring down at your lifeless body and suddenly, everything you know has changed. For Lucy Shaw, the phrase life’s a bitch and then you die never seemed more true.

Trapped haunting the men’s toilets on the corner of Carnaby Street, Lucy whiles away the time rating her visitors according to their bathroom habits. By the time mid-twenties Jeremy walks into her squalid home, she’s crawling the walls for a two-way conversation. So when she realises Jeremy can actually see her, she’s determined to make him a regular visitor. Soon he’s bringing Lucy magazines, newspapers and – most importantly – details of what’s been happening on her favourite TV shows.

Jeremy figures out way to get her out of the toilet and before you can say ‘social networking’ Lucy has hooked up with fellow ghosts Hep (a poltergeist with anger management issues) and Ryan (officially the most gorgeous boy EVER). With their help, Lucy gets the answers to some of her burning questions (Just how do you snog the boy of your dreams when you don’t actually have any lips?) But when they get close to tracking down Lucy’s killer, things take a turn for the worse. Will she lose everything she cares about again?
