Books I'm Looking Forward to in 2010

Posted on Saturday, January 9th, 2010 by Leah

I’ve been looking at the 2010 releases and there are some fab books due out so I figured I’d compile my list of Top 10 Books I’m Looking Forward To in 2010.

10/ Melissa Hill - The Truth About You

A list of books I’m looking forward to would not be complete without a Melissa Hill offering. Melissa is the kind of author you get excited about even when you have no idea what her book will be about! The Truth About You sounds fantastic and I can’t wait until May!

9/ Anita Notaro - No Ordinary Love

Anita Notaro is a fantastic author and I loved her first two books and I really can’t wait for this. It sounds fantastic and will undoubtedly be a must-read.

8/ Miranda Dickinson - Welcome To My World.

Having loved Fairytale of New York I’m so excited to read Miranda’s next offering. It’s bound to be fantastic.

    7/ Linda Green - Things I Wish I’d Known

I loved 10 Reasons Not To Fall In Love so Linda has shot up my list of fab authors and I can’t wait for this to be released.

6/ Emily Giffin - Heart of the Matter

Emily returns after a couple of years without a new release. I loved her first two books and enjoyed the next two and can’t wait for this one. I’ve read the first chapter and it sounds fantastic.

    5/ Giselle Green - A Sister’s Gift

People say Giselle is the British Jodi Picoult and I can see why people have said that. A Sister’s Gift sounds like a fab read and I can’t wait to read it!

4/ Emily Barr - The Perfect Lie

Having loved The Sisterhood and The Life You Want I was so thrilled when I noticed Emily’s new one up on Amazon. It sounds like another great but dark read from Emily.

3/ Paige Toon - Pictures of Lily

Paige is rapidly becoming one of my favourite authors and having loved her first three books I have high hopes for this one. I wonder who’ll make a re-appearance from her previous books?

2/ Belinda Jones - Living La Vida Loca

You have no idea how much I want to read this. I love Belinda’s work and this is definitely one I just can’t wait for. It sounds fab and I’m sure it will be!

    1/ Sophie Kinsella - Mini-Shopaholic

BECKY BLOOMWOOD IS COMING BACK. Becky is coming back and that’s all I need to know. ALL I NEED TO KNOW. I can’t believe it’s not out until September. That is so mean! Check out the synopsis here!

Book News: WAGs At The World Cup by Alison Kervin

Posted on Saturday, January 9th, 2010 by Leah

When we spoke to Alison Kervin back in July, she told us that her next book was due to be a sequel to Celebrity Bride starring Kelly Monsoon and for a while Amazon had it up as My Hollywood Husband. Instead Alison’s next book will actually bring back everyone’s favourite WAG Tracie Martin in WAGs At The World Cup.

It’s due out on May 27th and it can’t come quick enough as far as I’m concerned. The book is obviously geared towards the fact England have qualified for the World Cup and will undoubtedly be just as good as A WAGs Diary and A WAG Abroad.

As soon as we have a synopsis/cover we’ll bring it to you!

Book News: Mini Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella

Posted on Friday, January 8th, 2010 by Leah

When Sophie Kinsella mentioned a few months ago that she was working on another Shopaholic I nearly went into hyperspace. The Shopaholic series is my favourite. series. ever. and I couldn’t wait to find out what the title would be never mind the synopsis or cover. The next Shopaholic will be titled MINI SHOPAHOLIC (yes, it deserves caps) and is due out on 16th September 2010 (WHY SO LONG?). The synopsis is also finally up and here you go - get your heads around this:

Becky Brandon (nee Bloomwood) thought motherhood would be a breeze - but it’s trickier than she thought. Two-year-old Minnie is a little tearaway who has created havoc everywhere from Harrods to Harvey Nicks to her own christening. She hires taxis at random, her favourite word is ‘Mine’, and she already has a penchant for Balenciaga bags. Becky is at her wits’ end.

On top of this, she and Luke are still living with her Mum and Dad, there’s a big financial crisis so everyone’s having to Cut Back - including all her personal shopping clients - and her husband Luke is feeling low after the death of his beloved stepmother. To cheer Luke up, Becky decides to throw him a surprise birthday party - on a budget - and that’s when things become really complicated. As Becky tries to keep the arrangements secret, misunderstandings and excuses sprout everywhere, and soon she’s told so many fibs she can’t keep track of them. Will Becky pull off the surprise? Will Minnie give everything away? Will Minnie’s godparents ever stop arguing? Who will end up on the naughty step and who will get a gold star? And what will happen when Becky discovers Luke is keeping a big secret too?

I really don’t think I can wait until September. Truly I don’t. This makes Sophie Kinsella week in September OFFICIAL. Just reading the synopsis makes me want to re-read all of Becky’s adventures RIGHT NOW. Don’t worry I will be re-reading all of the Shopaholics as well as Sophie’s other books in readiness for SOPHIE KINSELLA WEEK. Words cannot describe how much I love Sophie Kinsella/Shopaholic series/Becky Bloomwood. I just hope Sophie doesn’t break Becky and Luke up otherwise I’ll be after her with a very sharp object.

Book Review: The Disengagement Ring by Clodagh Murphy

Posted on Friday, January 8th, 2010 by Leah

Kate O’Neill wants to settle down and have a family, so when her tree-hugging boyfriend Brian finally asks her to marry him, she says yes. She doesn’t even mind the fact there’s no ring to go with his proposal. Kate’s family, however, have other ideas and her mother Grace and sister Rachel set about sabotaging the engagement.

Their plan is to have Kate spend the summer in Tuscany with Will, the love of Kate’s life, in a bid to show Kate what she could have if she broke up with the tree-hugger. As Kate, Will and Walking Wounded (the band Will manages), head off to Tuscany, will Kate see that settling for second best isn’t what she wants and that it’s Will who truly is the love of her life?

Book News: I Heart Paris by Lindsey Kelk

Posted on Friday, January 8th, 2010 by Leah

I Heart Paris, Lindsey Kelk’s third book in the I Heart series starring Angela Clark, is due out on the 8th July 2010 and like I Heart New York and I Heart Hollywood, will be set in a completely different location to the last one - this time it’s Paris! I wasn’t a huge fan of the first two books (although Hollywood picked up a little), and I will probably read this, but I have to be honest and say it sounds the same as books 1 & 2 bar the destination in which it’s set (girl gets assignment of her dreams, goes to a fab destination, has boyfriend trouble). One thing I do love, though, is the cover! Here’s the synopsis:

Angela is in the City of Love - but her own love life is heading for trouble…

Angela Clark is a British girl living the dream in fabulous New York. But she’s never been to the romantic capital of the world - Paris. So when her lead singer boyfriend Alex suggests a trip there and she is asked to write insider’s guide to the hip city - she jumps at the chance!

Meandering along charming streets, perusing Paris’s hot destinations - all in the name of research - Angela decides she could get used to the joie de vivre of Paris. But there’s something awry, Angela soon realises that evil forces are at work, conspiring to sabotage her big break… And when she spots Alex having a tête-à-tête with his ex in a Paris bar - without best friend Jenny to counsel her - Angela begins to crumble.

With London and her old life only a train journey away - now is the time to decide if she should stay and face the music or return to the safety of home.

    Author Article: Sarah Duncan

Posted on Thursday, January 7th, 2010 by Leah

Sarah Duncan’s latest book Kissing Mr Wrong will be released in hardcover today and for that special occasion, Sarah agreed to write us a guest post about what it was like getting her first book Adultery For Beginners published. So, I’ll leave it to Sarah to tell you all about it…

I wrote my first book Adultery for Beginners in a mad dash, convinced I was going to die before finishing it, as it was the first time I’d ever got past Chapter One in about ten years of trying. I said all the ‘oh, I don’t suppose it’s any good’ stuff, but deep down I knew it was brilliant. So it was a bit of a shock when no one else agreed. I didn’t send it out to too many people, as I got very huffy when it got turned down. How could they not see it was a work of genius?

Gradually the idea seeped into my head that perhaps it wasn’t as brilliant as I’d hoped it was. I won some money on Premium Bonds and blew the lot on a book doctor’s report. When it came back I was appalled, as they didn’t rate it either. Worse, all their ideas were simply daft. One of their points was that I’d written it from four viewpoints, and they thought three of them were weak and needed beefing up. But although I did dismiss it, the comment gave me the clue. I was only interested in one character’s story, and always had been, but had written using multiple viewpoints because I thought that was what writers did.

I decided to rewrite from her viewpoint only. It wasn’t an easy decision, as it meant immediately ditching 50% of the novel but I knew it was the right thing to do. Because I’d already worked on the story from the other points of view, even though those scenes had been ditched, I knew the characters backwards and it made it surprisingly easy to rewrite. I rewrote 90% in the end, which astonishes me now.

When I sent it out again, I had an offer from an agent within 36 hours, and it took 8 days before a publisher offered enough money for me to become a full time writer, and I’ve been one ever since. Surprise, surprise, I’m a BIG fan of rewrites. I’m also now convinced that it’s pointless writing what you think will work, what you think will sell, what you think writers do. Write the story you want to write, in the way you want to write it. Stuff what anyone else says, write from the heart.

    Thanks so much Sarah!

    Book News: Lauren Weisberger

Posted on Thursday, January 7th, 2010 by Leah

Lauren Weisberger, author of The Devil Wears Prada which inspired a film of the same name, will have her fourth book released in 2010. It’s due out on 27th May 2010 and is currently untitled although the American Amazon have it titled as The Last Night At Chateau Marmont. I’ve only read one of Lauren’s books (Everyone Worth Knowing - although I can’t remember it) but have The Devil Wears Prada to read as I loved the film. Her new one sounds interesting and here is the synopsis:

Two college sweethearts are living a happy, rather ordinary life in New York but there’s a slight twist — she’s the breadwinner, supporting her musician boyfriend. Until the tables are turned when he’s discovered by a Sony exec and their worlds are turned upside down. Soon they are holidaying in the Hamptons, adorning the cover of Vanity Fair and attending every glitzy party in town — all the while his career is reaching new, dizzying heights. But the trappings of this elite lifestyle mean our heroine must face the wrath of the US press.

Scorned for having a less-than-perfectly-honed LA body and brutalised for being ‘ordinary’ things couldn’t get any worse! Then news erupts that her best friend, who’s been her confidante through these months of misery, has sold her innermost secrets to the press and her life spirals out of control. She finds solace in a secret support group: The Civilian Ex-Wives and Girlfriends of Celebrities Group — a place to gossip, lubricated with lashings of shared experiences and strong cocktails. As this sassy group right the wrongs of their past relationships, our heroine must decide if she’s going to sink or swim.
