Book Review: The Truth About You by Melissa Hill

Posted on Friday, May 21st, 2010 by Chloe

One morning in the small town of Lakeview, Ella Harris finds a cardboard box on the doorstop of her café. At first she thinks it’s her usual muffin delivery but is shocked to find that the box actually contains a newborn baby.

But what kind of mother would abandon a defenceless baby like that, and why?

Could it have been newly single Nina who, after being rejected by the father of her unborn child, has no choice but to return to Lakeview to stay with her estranged (and slightly peculiar) dad?

Or was it Lakeview-born Hollywood actress Eva Seymour, who on the eve of her triumphant return home from LA, has a completely ill-advised fling with a handsome co-star. A baby is certain to ruin her hard-fought-for career.

Or perhaps it’s happily married Jess who, as the only non-mum amongst her friends, finds herself increasingly left out. Terrified that she will lose them altogether, she embarks on becoming a mother too. But is she really rushing into something she really knows nothing about?

Book News: The Only Way Is Up by Carole Matthews

Posted on Friday, May 21st, 2010 by Leah

The ever-prolific Carole Matthews is back with her second book of 2010 on 16th September 2010 called The Only Way Is Up. As I’m a huge fan of Carole’s, I’m really looking forward to her new release and I also can’t wait to see the cover because since Carole Matthews has had her new cover design, I think it’s one of the best I’ve seen! Here’s the synopsis:

Lily and Laurence Lamont-Jones have it all: lavish holidays in exotic locations, a top private school for their children, Hettie and Hugo, and a beautiful Buckinghamshire home with horses and stables. But their perfect world is about to be turned upside down. Laurence has lost his job and, on their return from holiday, they find their house and all their belongings have been repossessed. Forced to live in a council house on one of Milton Keynes’s roughest estates, the Lamont-Joneses are about to discover how the other half live. And with the help of true friends, a little luck and a lot of determination they learn that when you’ve reached rock bottom the only way is up…

Book News: Welcome To My World by Miranda Dickinson

Posted on Friday, May 21st, 2010 by Chloe

Miranda Dickinson’s debut novel Fairytale Of New York was a massive success with anyone who picked up a copy, and luckily for fans of that book, Miranda has her second book due out later this year. Welcome To My World is due out on November 11th, and it sounds like the perfect winter read. The cover is absolutely gorgeous as well, I can’t wait to read it! Here’s the synopsis:

“When Harri Langton finds herself locked in the Ladies’ loo at Stone Langley Village Hall, she has plenty of time to muse on the events leading up to officially The Worst Night of Her Life… Harri is a travel agent with a shameful secret. Despite possessing extensive knowledge of places around the globe, she’s never set foot outside the UK. Few of Harri’s friends understand her longing to see the world - least of all her boyfriend Rob who still hasn’t proposed after seven years of waiting. But when Alex Brannan arrives in town, Harri finds a kindred spirit. A globe-trotting traveller for the past ten years, Alex’s stories light up Harri’s world, and in return she becomes his confidante, sharing the highs and lows of his awful love life. But everything changes when Alex’s mother suggests her Big Idea - offering Alex up on a plate to the female readership of Juste Moi magazine. How will Alex feel about being sold off as a prize bull? Will Rob ever step up and propose? And will Harri’s dreams of exploration ever become a reality?”

Book Review: Leaving Unknown by Kerry Reichs

Posted on Friday, May 21st, 2010 by Danielle

Sweet Lips, Tennessee . . . Toad Suck, Arkansas . . . Okay, Oklahoma . . . Truth or Consequences, New Mexico . . . Maeve Connelly’s epic road trip is taking her through every colorfully named tiny town in America on her way to the far less imaginatively named Los Angeles, California. With her foulmouthed cockatiel, Oliver, her only companion, Maeve’s heading way off the beaten track with little money and a load of painful baggage she wants to leave behind. But when her beloved rattletrap, “Elsie,” breaks down outside Unknown, Arizona, she finds herself taking a much longer rest stop than she anticipated.

The only mechanic in the vicinity is on an indefinite walkabout, so Maeve’s in for the long haul—and she’ll need to find two jobs to pay for Elsie’s eventual repair. But she’s starting to feel strangely at home among the quirky denizens of Unknown—especially around her new bookstore owner boss—so Maeve is seriously considering saying good-bye to Hollywood for good . . . if she can keep her past troubles from coming to light.

Chick Lit Classics: The Accidental Mother by Rowan Coleman

Posted on Thursday, May 20th, 2010 by Leah

Chick Lit Classics is a new feature on Chick Lit Reviews where we highlight the books we feel are classics of the chick lit genre. Feel free to discuss our choices in the comments section!

This week I’ve chosen Rowan Coleman’s book The Accidental Mother for Chick Lit Classic. I read it in 2008 and again in 2009 and I absolutely loved it. It was witty, it had fantastic characters and I loved the chemistry between Sophie and the girls. It was a hugely enjoyable book and I hugely recommend you pick it up. It’s sequel The Accidental Family is also good, but The Accidental Mother is tons better!

Sophie Mills has worked her Manolo Blahniks off to reach the near-top of her profession. And she’s very happy with her priorities in life - her job, her neurotic cat Artemis and her passion for shoes. After all, relationships only get in the way. And as for children - She hasn’t even begun to think about them yet. Until one day an unexpected visitor brings news of a strange inheritance and Sophie is suddenly, out of the blue, in sole charge of two children under the age of six. But motherhood can’t be all that hard, can it? Within twenty-four hours, her make-up smeared all over the bathroom, Artemis has taken up residence on top of her wardrobe, and Sophie is in despair. And all her unconventional mother can suggest is “Dr. Roberts’ Complete Dog Training and Care Manual”. Determined to rise to the challenge, Sophie soon realises that she’ll need more than a business plan to cope with all this …

Book News: The Truth Between by Emma Louise Jordan

Posted on Thursday, May 20th, 2010 by Chloe

Irish author Emma-Louise Jordan, aka Emma Heatherington, has her next book due out this summer through Poolbeg Fiction, and it sounds like a great read! I really enjoyed her first book Beyond Sin which was a thriller, so I’ll be looking out for this. I love the red cover too, it’ll certainly stand out! It’s due out on 26th June, and for those of us not in Ireland, you can buy it through Amazon. Here’s the synopsis:

““When Estelle Lynch takes her own life, she leaves in her wake a mystery that will rock her daughter Hollie’s world forever.

A diary of secrets which holds the key to Estelle’s true past is found in her possessions and the identity of Hollie’s father is only inches away. As Hollie battles with her grief, the obsession to find the perpetrators who made her young mother’s life a misery threatens to ruin everything Hollie has ever known.

Soon, Hollie finds herself dicing with a torrid and dangerous back story that leads her into a cat and mouse chase taking her from Ireland’s northern shoreline to the heartland of Belfast… and to the city of Dublin and into the path of celebrity chef, Max Kelly.

Hollie’s instincts go into overdrive as she becomes more and more convinced that the handsome father of two is linked to her mother’s death. But somewhere between her instincts, her mother’s diaries and what she learns about Max Kelly lies the truth between the life she knows and the life she only thought she knew…”"

Book Review: House Rules by Jodi Picoult

Posted on Wednesday, May 19th, 2010 by Leah

Jacob Hunt is good at many things, he is able to remember a film word for word after the first watch, he’s able to memorize a book after one simple glance and he’s probably the most organised teenager in the world.

However Jacob is unable to look anybody in the eye and the colour orange sends him into tantrums rarely seen outside of young children which are all hallmarks of Jacob’s condition; Jacob Hunt has Aspergers. When Jacob’s social studies teacher Jess is found dead, all of the signs point to Jacob and the fact his Aspergers means he can’t look anybody in the eye and the police begin to believe Jacob had something to do with it.

Jacob’s mother, Emma, then has to ask herself: is her son capable of murder?
