    Author Article: Julia Williams

Posted on Tuesday, May 25th, 2010 by Chloe

I have been lucky enough to read an ARC of Julia Williams’ new book The Bridesmaid Pact and it is an absolutely brilliant read. Julia offered to write us an article about weddings to post this week as it’s the release of her book, and it’s a great read too. I really hope you all enjoy the book, it’s a lovely one to sit back with in the sun and immerse yourself in, but until you can read that, enjoy Julia’s fantastic article, and our thanks go to Julia for taking the time write this for us!

“The Bridesmaid Pact is the story of four friends who make a promise to be each other’s bridesmaids when they grow up, only for things not to turn out quite according to plan…

When I was asked by my editor to write a book about weddings, it seemed a little bit of a tall order. I’ve been married for over twenty years now, and so have most of my friends. Long gone are the days when every weekend seemed to be being spent trogging up and down the country to various sets of nuptials. The years in between have been busy domestic ones, could I even summon up the memory of how it felt to be a bride on her special day?

To help me in my endeavours, I did start thinking back to my own wedding - while realising that some things have moved on since 1989 ), some things inevitably remain the same. There will, undoubtedly be stress. There will at some point be tears. There will be even in the most functional of families moments of strife and disunity. But generally speaking things come together on the big day, and everyone (particularly the bride and groom) has a blast…

So my first point of call was tapping back into the things that went both wrong and right on my own wedding day. My first major crisis came two months before the big day, when the woman running the hotel we’d booked for the reception ran off with the cook, and had to sell up a week before the wedding. Oh the trauma of that discovery, and the subsequent frantic phone calls to my mother (I was inconveniently based in London, while getting married in Shropshire. Long distance weddings. Don’t do it, girls!)

Then there was the wedding rings cock up. My husband and I, not being in the habit of buying rings on a regular basis, naively thought we could get the rings we’d ordered a fortnight before the wedding, sized in our local jewellers. Wrong. Of course they had to be sent off to the manufacturers.

“We can have them back in a fortnight,” said the cheery girl behind the counter.

“Oh,” we said weakly, “we’re getting married in a fortnight.”

Luckily, they had an emergency service, so we were promised them within a week.

A week before the wedding, I promptly turned up to pick up the rings. They weren’t there.

“They’ll be in on Monday,” I was assured.

Monday came and went, no rings. By Wednesday they still hadn’t arrived, and my husband and I were becoming frantic.

“Why not try the jeweller in the High Street?” suggested my mum.

The jeweller in the High Street wasn’t able to sell us any rings, but promised we could borrow some if we got stuck. “We can’t have you going up the aisle, naked, m’dear,” were his parting words.

So that’s in the end, what we did.

Some, but not all of these details have slipped into The Bridesmaid Pact, as well as some of the good stuff too. Mrs Trim, who sorts out Doris’ flowers is inspired by the lovely old lady who lived halfway up a hill in Shropshire and made me the most gorgeous bouquet of gold roses. And I hope I have managed to capture some of the dizzying joy I experienced on my own wedding day.

The thing about getting married, it seems to me is that you are not only embarking on your (you hope) lifelong journey with your partner, but the lead up to the marriage can be a journey in itself. So The Bridesmaid Pact is very much the story of the individual journey each of the characters’ takes, both towards their wedding day and beyond. For all of them, the wedding itself isn’t the end it’s the beginning, and for some of them it’s a long path to the happiness they deserve.

In the end I was surprised at how much of my own experience of getting married and going to weddings, flowed out of me, once I got going. But like I say, while 21st weddings have moved on, some things never change.

Boy meets girl, Boy gets married to girl. All sorts of things can happen…

    And that’s a gift to a writer.”

Book News: To The Moon and Back by Jill Mansell

Posted on Tuesday, May 25th, 2010 by Chloe

Anyone a fan of Jill Mansell? Well, if you are you’ll be pleased to know we already have details of Jill’s next book to be called To The Moon and Back! It’s not due out until 3rd February 2011, but I’m already excited about it as I’ve read Jill’s latest few releases and really enjoyed them. Here’s the synopsis:

“When Ellie tragically loses her husband Jamie in an accident she feels that her world has come to an end. Months later she is ready for a new start – at work that is. She doesn’t need a new man – not with Jamie’s secret visits to keep her company.

Entrepreneur Zack seems to have it all – wealth, good looks and success. But the woman he can’t stop thinking about won’t give him a second glance.

Washed-up popstar Roo is sure that she’s finally found the one. Niall is everything she’s ever wanted – that is until she learns that he already has a wife. Intrigued, Roo is determined to check out her competition. But in relationships things are not always what they seem…”

Samantha Sharp is a football agent, and a very good one at that. She’s worked hard to get to the top in a male oriented world, and it’s finally paying off. However, when Sam is set up and her beloved career threatened, she’s determined to clear her name and get to the bottom of who wants to destroy her life. Book Cover: One Secret Summer by Lesley Lokko

Posted on Monday, May 24th, 2010 by Leah

Another author that is relatively new to me is Lesley Lokko. I think we may have posted something about her last book but apart from that, she’s never really come to my attention. However I was browsing around the web and came across the cover for her next book One Secret Summer which is due out on 30th September 2010. I think the cover looks really nice and the synopsis sounds intriguing, too:

The Keelers are one of those nice, middle-class English families who seem to have it all. Diana is the matriarch - a highly successful barrister and QC, she’s the force that keeps everyone and everything together. Her sons Rafe, Aaron and Josh are in their mid-thirties when they each, in turn, get married. The arrival into the family of three very different women - Maddy, an American actress; Julia, lawyer with working-class roots and Niela, a young Somali refugee - upsets the carefully constructed balance of family life that Diana has worked so hard to maintain. There’s a dreadful secret at the heart of the Keeler family and slowly, each of the women in her own way, begins to unravel what it is that Diana has kept hidden for so long. Touched with glamour and escapism, this riveting new novel from Lesley Lokko takes you right to the heart of a family secret.

Book News: Stolen Child by Laura Elliot

Posted on Monday, May 24th, 2010 by Leah

Laura Elliot’s debut novel A Prodigal Sister was released last year and I managed to pick it up at the book swop some months ago. I have yet to read it but it does sound fab so I will get around to it eventually. Laura’s next book called Stolen Child will be published on 22nd July 2010. It sounds like a fantastic read - one fans of Jodi Picoult, Diane Chamberlain and Giselle Green will adore and I must say I’m really looking forward to it. Here’s the synopsis:

When Carla Kelly and Robert Gardner marry, they seem destined for happiness. But tragedy strikes when their two-day-old baby, Isobel, is stolen. Distraught and bewildered, they must cope with the media frenzy that follows. Isobel’s whereabouts remains a mystery for sixteen years. As hope of finding her fades, their marriage disintegrates under the strain and they divorce. Robert moves to Australia and Carla, who had been a successful model, becomes reclusive.

Meanwhile, many miles away in a small country town-land, Aisling Nolan, unaware of her true identity, is the adored only child of Susan and David Nolan. When she discovers the truth, she struggles to come to terms with the knowledge that her childhood was based on a lie - and that the woman she knew as her mother must now stand trial for kidnapping. David, under police investigation, is determined to prove his innocence. For Carla and Robert, the adjustment is equally painful. Their long search is over but their daughter is a stranger to them. Initially, Carla’s anger towards David is intense but, as his story unfolds, and with the eyes of the media watching, she is aware of a strong, mutual attraction drawing them towards each other. Stolen Child is a love story about two families who are torn apart by deception and the consequences of a reckless act that shaped their futures.

American Saturday: Susan Wingate wins award for ‘Bobby’s Diner’

Posted on Saturday, May 22nd, 2010 by Danielle

Susan Wingate’s “Bobby’s Diner” – the No. 1 Book in the Bobby’s Diner Series Wins a 2010 Finalist Award for the fiction category of Women’s Lit/Chick Lit, in the International Book Awards (IBA).

On the heels of 2009, it seems as if “Bobby’s Diner” will not give up its momentum on prize-winning.

Susan Wingate’s novel, “Bobby’s Diner” (False Bay Books, August 2009) won two finalist awards in 2009—one for the National Book Awards and another for the Next Generation Indie Book Awards. This year the book is still garnering acclaim.

The 2010 International Book Awards (IBA) has just slated “Bobby’s Diner” as a Finalist Award Winner in the fiction category of Women’s Lit/Chick Lit. When asked about the honors, Wingate responded, “I couldn’t believe it. I entered only two days before the deadline! I had to Federal Express my entry to have it arrive on time. I thought it was a good try but never, ever thought it would win in an international competition. Not that I don’t have faith in this book, nothing like it. But, and international competition draws so many more entries, I thought [“Bobby’s Diner”] might have slight chance of winning, at best. I’m ecstatic!”
