Book Cover: The Good Girls Guide To Bad Men by Jessica Brody

Posted on Monday, June 15th, 2009 by Leah

I wrote about the sequel to Jessica Brody’s novel, The Fidelity Files, way back in April when it was under the US title Love Under Cover and had a lovely yet simple cover. The UK cover has been released and let me tell you, I love it! The title, in the UK, will be The Good Girls Guide To Bad Men and is released on October 1st. The synopsis follows:

Jennifer Hunter never saw herself as the relationship type. After all, she’d spent the last two years of her life as an undercover fidelity inspector, hired to test men’s faithfulness—not exactly the kind of job that lends itself to intimacy. But when Jamie Richards walked into her life, everything changed, and Jennifer vowed to trade in her undercover lifestyle for something more normal.

That’s why she formed the Hawthorne Agency: Five full-time fidelity inspectors, hired to carry out Jennifer’s mission while she manages the process from a safe (relationship-saving) distance. But a surprise proposal from Jamie leaves her wondering if the “normal” life is really meant for her. Can a former fidelity inspector who’s seen nothing but failed marriages ever come to terms with tying the knot herself? And when she receives a frantic phone call from one of her employees in trouble, she’s faced with a choice: fulfill her obligation to the client who needs her or honor her promise to the man she loves.

Having loved The Fidelity Files, I can’t wait for the sequel!

Book Review: A Crowded Marriage by Catherine Alliott

Posted on Monday, June 15th, 2009 by Chloe

Catherine Alliott - A Crowded MarriageReview by Dot

I’ve never really taken the time to pick up a Catherine Alliott book for some reason, however this one found it’s way into my basket and I’m extremely glad that it did. The story revolves round Imogen Cameron, her husband Alex and their son Rufus. The Camerons are experiencing financial troubles so they have to leave their house and life in London and accept Eleanor Latimer’s offer of a rent-free cottage on her large country estate. The problem is that Eleanor is Alex’s glamorous ex and Imogen already has her suspicions.

So they relocate to the country and settle into Shepherd’s Cottage which comes complete with sheep, chickens and cows that Imogen is expected to look after. Life becomes very busy, Rufus has to be settled into a new school; Imogen has many encounters with the bossy but handsome vet and Alex and Eleanor seem to be spending far too much time together. Although Imogen had not welcomed the move to the country she does find that she is able to re-invigorate her painting career and begins to think that she could become very happy in the country. There are many twists and turns in the story as the situation finally comes to a head. I did not expect the ending at all which was a nice surprise really as books in this genre can sometimes be a little predictable.

A Crowded Marriage made me laugh out loud on several occasions and I think that Catherine Alliot creates extremely witty dialogue between her lovely characters. I will definitely be reading another Catherine Alliot book, I just hope the rest are as good as this one!

Book News: House Rules by Jodi Picoult

Posted on Monday, June 15th, 2009 by Chloe

One of my favourite all-time authors Jodi Picoult has just released the brilliant Handle with Care, but already the synopsis for her next book is up on her website. House Rules isn’t due for release until March 2010 but looks fantastic, and I love the sound of the synopsis already! Here it is:

“HOUSE RULES is about Jacob Hunt, a teenage boy with Asperger’s Syndrome. He’s hopeless at reading social cues or expressing himself well to others, and like many kids with AS, Jacob has a special focus on one subject – in his case, forensic analysis. He’s always showing up at crime scenes, thanks to the police scanner he keeps in his room, and telling the cops what they need to do…and he’s usually right. But then one day his tutor is found dead, and the police come to question him. All of the hallmark behaviors of Asperger’s – not looking someone in the eye, stimulatory tics and twitches, inappropriate affect – can look a heck of a lot like guilt to law enforcement personnel — and suddenly, Jacob finds himself accused of murder. HOUSE RULES looks at what it means to be different in our society, how autism affects a family, and how our legal system works well for people who communicate a certain way – but lousy for those who don’t.”

Published by Hodder & Stoughton, its not on Amazon for pre-order yet but keep an eye out as it will be eventually! You can read an excerpt on Jodi’s website; http://www.jodipicoult.com/

Book News: Ralph's Party Sequel by Lisa Jewell

Posted on Saturday, June 13th, 2009 by Leah

Lisa Jewell has posted on her blog that she has finished the first draft of the Ralph’s Party sequel. She says she will be spending all of this month editing it and whipping it into shape:

I’m a bit previous this month as it’s actually still May but given that I will be spending all of June whipping my ginormous, oversized, 500 page Ralph’s Party sequel into shape, I thought I should get going on this while things are still relatively calm. I finally delivered the monster book on May 15th. Delivery is a weird thing, half joyous relief, half cold, slow dread, with a soupcon of anti-climax, so it’s always a good idea to fill the days immediately afterwards with lots of nice things to take your mind off it – and possibly lots of alcohol too. Towards the end of the book I was writing into the night, up to six thousand words a day. It’s a crazy, slightly surreal time and thank God it only happens once a year! Anyway, my editor has now got back to me and suggested that I give it a thoroughly good trimming (which I knew she would, it is stupidly long) and that I needed to do a lot of work on making one of the characters more sympathetic (which I hadn’t expected, but I can totally see her point) so a lot of work to do, but for today the sun is shining and I am in denial, catching up with myself and dreaming about an afternoon in the garden with my girls!

No date for release but I would assume it might be out in 2010. It will also be interesting to hear what the title will be… I enjoyed Ralph’s Party so will have to give it another read!

    Book News: Annie Sanders

Posted on Saturday, June 13th, 2009 by Chloe

Although the novel is still as yet untitled, Amazon have the synopsis for Annie Sanders’ next novel to be released on the 19th August 2010. Here it is:

“Alice spends her days beavering away at her sewing machine, making divine, flamboyant clothes that express all the passion and flair that she cannot, and at night she sits alone with her latest creations, fretting over her struggling business. Her life is one of unfulfilled ambitions and missed opportunities. Then one evening Alice meets the beautiful, fey and enigmatic Gabriel, who has an uncanny knack for foretelling fortunes, and manages to convince even the cynical Alice. So when Gabe tells her that her future isn’t looking too rosy - in fact she doesn’t have one - Alice embarks on a spree of ‘what the hell and why not’. She faces her demons, confronts those that have annoyed her, and takes risks for the first time in her life, convinced that the accident he predicts will befall her. When the day of her prophesied demise comes - and goes - Alice storms round to challenge Gabe, who sheepishly admits he must have got it wrong this time. The appalled and angry Alice has a hell of a mess to put right now, and demands that Gabe help her do some damage control. So begins an edge-of-the-seat, race-against-time to repair Alice’s reckless actions. But halfway through Alice asks herself if everything is worth mending? Has she inadvertently improved her life just as she thought it was about to end? And why is Gabe so reluctant to help her untangle her biggest gaffe of all?”

If you can’t wait that long for a book from Annie Sanders, their latest book Getting Mad, Getting Even is due out this summer on 20th August 2009!
