Author of the Week: Martina Reilly

Posted on Thursday, June 11th, 2009 by Leah

Martina Reilly, also known as Tina Reilly, is one of my favourite authors. I’ve read Something Borrowed, Wish Upon A Star and All I Want Is You and loved all three. Once I get the chance to re-read them, I’ll review them. Here’s a bit about Martina:

Martina wrote her first few novels under the name Tina Reilly before her publishers suggested she should use Martina Reilly. Apparently, it’s to make her books sound more serious. I personally think her new book covers do that perfectly well! Martina is married with children and is also a qualified drama teacher. She is the author of 10 novels.

Her novels are: Flipside, The Onion Girl, Is This Love?, Something Borrowed, Wedded Blitz, Wish Upon A Star, All I Want Is You, The Summer of Secrets, Second Chance and her 10th, out in October, The Wish List. You can read a review of Second Chances here, reviewed by Chloe.

Martina is a brilliant writer and I highly recommend you read Something Borrowed or All I Want Is You or Second Chance. If you’re new to Martina, those are the ones I’d recommend you start with but all her books would be worth the read. Martina takes serious topics and inserts humour into them to make them more light-hearted and they are very easy reads.

Author Article: "Making A Modern Bonkbuster" by Jo Rees

Posted on Thursday, June 11th, 2009 by Chloe

The author of brilliant summer read Platinum, Jo Rees, has written a brilliant article for us all about writing your own summer bonkbuster. Our thanks go to Jo for taking the time to write it, we hope you enjoy it!

Making a modern bonkbuster - by Jo Rees

It’s that time of year again. The time to choose a book for going on holiday. If like me, you’ve got kids and a busy life, your choice of summer holiday read is an important one. It’s probably one of the only books you’ll read from cover to cover this year.

Sure, we might have great intentions to read something literary or that worthy the book group recommended, but the truth is we want something easy and fun, but exciting and engrossing enough to stop us being distracted from the kids having sand fights and husbands rummaging to the bottom of the carefully packed beach bag for the sun-lotion.

But after years of navel gazing chick-lit, I don’t want to read about anyone like me. I want full on escapism. I want glamour, a huge roller-coaster plot and the naughty bits being very naughty too.

Book News: Farahad Zama wins Melissa Nathan Award for Comedy Romance 2009

Posted on Thursday, June 11th, 2009 by Chloe

Farahad Zama‘s debut novel The Marriage Bureau for Rich People has won the Melissa Nathan Award for Comedy Romance this year. Farahad succeed’s Lisa Jewell’s 31 Dream Street which was last year’s winner, and wins a cheque for £5,000 and I am sure far more readership of his books! Here’s the synopsis of the winning book:

“Mr Ali decides to open a marriage bureau that will cater for a wide range of Indian clients from all walks of life and, encouraged by the indomitable Mrs Ali, he has the good sense to appoint a local girl, Aruna, as his very able assistant. Under Mr Ali’s and Aruna’s imaginative care the marriage bureau flourishes as it sorts out the future for many happy clients, although meanwhile things are not running so smoothly for everyone in the office as Aruna is nursing a secret that threatens to break her heart, while Mr Ali is unable to see that he himself doesn’t follow the wise advice he so readily offers to those who come for help…”

For more information about the awards which are held in honour of the late author Melissa Nathan, see the website: http://www.melissanathan.com/Award/

Congratulations to Farahad on his win, and commiserations to the other nominated authors including Jane Costello, Trisha Ashley, Miriam Morrison, Juliet Archer and Kate Harrison.
