Book News: After You by Julie Buxbaum

Posted on Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 by Leah

juliabuxbaumoveryouJulie Buxbaum’s second novel, After You, is released on 25th August and sounds like a must-read. Her debut novel, The Opposite of Love, was released last year and also sounds fantastic. The synopsis for After You reads:

It happened on a tree-lined street in Notting Hill to a woman who seemed to have the perfect life. Ellie Lerner’s best friend, Lucy, was murdered in front of her young daughter. And, as best friends do, Ellie dropped everything—her marriage, her job, her life in the Boston suburbs—to travel to London and pick up the pieces of Lucy’s life. While Lucy’s husband, Greg, copes with his grief by retreating into himself, eight-year-old Sophie has simply stopped speaking.

Desperate to help Sophie, Ellie turns to a book that gave her comfort as a child, The Secret Garden. As the two spend hours exploring the novel’s winding passageways, its story of hurt, magic, and healing blooms around them. But so, too, do Lucy’s secrets—some big, some small—secrets Lucy kept hidden, even from her best friend. Over a summer in London, as Ellie peels back the layers of her friend’s life, she’s forced to confront her own as well: the marriage she left behind, the loss she’d hoped to escape. And suddenly Ellie’s carefully constructed existence is spinning out of control in a chain of events that will transform her life—and those around her— forever.

Book News: Lucy Springer Gets Even by Lisa Heidke

Posted on Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 by Leah

lisaheidkelucyspringergetsevenLisa Heidke’s debut novel, Lucy Springer Gets Even, is released in the UK on 5th November and sounds like a very interesting read and one we at chicklitreviews would love!:

Lucy Springer thinks she’s got it tough. She’s living through renovation hell, her two kids seem more challenging than ever, and her once successful acting career has been reduced to the odd commercial. Then Max, her husband, absconds to Bali with an unknown companion and things go from bad to disastrous.

But Lucy doesn’t give up easily. Juggling increasingly chaotic building dramas, bewildered children, her crazy best friend-slash-agent Gloria, her ever ‘helpful’ mother and chasing after Max, Lucy Springer is determined to get her life onto an even keel-and more. This delightful new novel is an often hilarious account of triumphing over adversity, following your dreams and listening to your heart.

AMY HUBERMAN - HELLO HEARTBREAK - 2ND JULY

You’d think twenty-seven years would be enough time to wise up to the rules of love and loss, especially Rule Number 1: Do not, at any time, let him see how much he has hurt you. But no, Izzy Keegan was probably off doing sambuca shots when that lesson was taught. So, starting with public humiliation (that infamous blow-up with her Ex and his new woman … huge mistake), and taking in temporary insanity, rebound sex, and a night in a police cell along the way, Izzy has to make up her own rules for coping with heartbreak.

Luckily she has friends who are there for her through thick and thin (even if ‘doing an Izzy’ is their new shorthand for completely losing it). And she’s got her foot in the door of the film business (though dogsbody wasn’t exactly the job she dreamt of doing). Now, all she has to do is put the dirty cheating love-rat behind her. You’d think twenty-seven years would be enough time to wise up to the rules of love and loss. Make that twenty-seven and a bit …danbegleymstakenidentity

However, when he meets Katharine Longwell, the queen of women’s fiction and she seems to like him, he senses an opportunity for literary riches, if not reputation. He tells her that his female cousin is an aspiring chick-lit author and secures a promise that she’ll help said cousin get published. The only problem is, he needs to come up with a manuscript – fast. He buys every woman’s magazine and watches Oprah endlessly on DVD but he still can’t quite get inside a woman’s head. Then his roommate suggests that Mitch sign up for sister’s dance class. Mitch attends the first class as an alter ego, “Jason.” Problem is, after a class or two, Mitch/Jason is hooked – both on dancing and the charming Marie, who has no idea that he knows her brother or the real reason he’s come to the class. Suddenly, his novel-writing project is becoming a lot more than he bargained for …farahadzamathemanyconditionsoflove
