Book News: Why Do We Have To Live With Men? by Bernadette Strachan

Posted on Monday, June 1st, 2009 by Leah

Bernadette Strachan has barely released her latest novel - How To Lose A Husband & Gain A Life was out in April - but we already have the synopsis for her sixth novel: Why Do We Have To Live With Men? The synopsis reads:

Four women in their early thirties make a drunken pact: if they’re not settled and married by the age of forty they will all live together. No one expects this to actually come true, of course …On the morning of her fortieth birthday, one of the womem sits alone in her house, wondering where it all went wrong.

Her friends aren’t faring much better either, and one by one her house fills up with women who have sworn off men for life. Initially euphoric at the freedom and female bonding, the dream quickly loses its appeal as female hormones begin to take over.

The plumber is mobbed when he turns up at the house to fix a leak, and innocent neighbours find themselves outrageously flirted with. And, slowly but surely, the women do meet men who restore their faith in the opposite sex. It turns out women do need to men, after all - but on their own terms …

Why Do We Have To Live With Men is out on 13th May 2010. 2010 is shaping up nicely with a lot of authors having books out… yet we’re only half way through 2009!

Movie Review: Confessions of a Shopaholic

Posted on Monday, June 1st, 2009 by Leah

As well as this being a film review I’m also going to compare it to the novel of the same name. This review WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS if you haven’t read the book OR seen the movie.

    ****WHAT THE FILM IS ABOUT*****

Based on the novel of the same name Confessions of a Shopaholic tells the story of Becky Bloomwood who is a college grad lands a job as a financial journalist in New York City to support where she nurtures her shopping addiction and falls for a wealthy entrepreneur.

*****WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT***** - See my review here!

The books synopsis says: Meet Rebecca Bloomwood. She’s a journalist. She spends her working life telling others how to manage their money. She spends her leisure time …shopping. Retail therapy is the answer to all her problems. She knows she should stop, but she can’t. She tries Cutting Back, she tries Making More Money. But neither seems to work. The stories she concocts become more and more fantastic as she tries to untangle her increasingly dire financial difficulties. Her only comfort is to buy herself something - just a little something …Can Becky ever escape from this dream world, find true love, and regain the use of her Switch card?

Book Review: Wedding Season by Katie Fforde

Posted on Monday, June 1st, 2009 by Chloe

    katieffordeweddingseasonREVIEW BY DOT

I discovered Katie Fforde’s books only last year and I have enjoyed all that I have read so far. With my own wedding fast approaching, I thought I would give Wedding Season a go.

Sarah Stratford is a wedding planner with a secret, she doesn’t believe in love, her skills are tested to the limit when she has to organise the celebrity wedding of the year plus her little sister’s tiny budget wedding, all on the same day. Luckily she is able to enlist the help of two new friends; Elsa is a dress designer who prefers to stay out of the limelight and Bron is a hairdresser, among many things, who is embarking on a new and exciting life. So from sourcing the perfect venue, making a fairytale dress and constructing an impossible wedding cake, these three definitely have their hands full.

Book News: June Releases from Little Black Dress

Posted on Monday, June 1st, 2009 by Chloe

Coming up this month from the Little Black Dress publishing group:

Julie Cohen - Girl From Mars - 14th June

I, Philomena Desdemona Brown, do solemnly swear to forsake all romantic relationships…

It’s not like the vow, made by Fil and her three nerdy male best friends, seemed much of a big deal at the time. Frankly, Fil wouldn’t know romance if it hit her in the face, and with her real love being her artist job at Girl from Mars, the comic whose heroine has never had a love interest, she doesn’t exactly mind being relationship-free anyway. Until her world is rocked to its core when one of her long-standing quartet and Girl from Mars herself both unexpectedly fall in love. Is it time to give in to temptation and finally fall in love?

Marisa Heath - Perfect Image - 25th June

Young, naïve and stunning, Katrina is trying to make it as a model in Paris, sharing a tiny, run-down dorm and only just scraping a living. She’s about to cut her loses and head back to London when she’s spotted one night and asked out by THE ultimate movie heart-throb, actor Dominic Cayley.

She knows not to get too excited though – his girlfriends never last longer than a few dates. But when he keeps turning up on her doorstep, whisking her off for super-glam party weekends in Monaco, showering her in expensive jewels and designer clothes, she’s more than happy to be swept off her feet..

Book Review: Platinum by Jo Rees

Posted on Monday, June 1st, 2009 by Chloe

Jo Rees - PlatinumPlatinum focuses on the lives of 3 women all scorned by one man and how their lives were ruined by the evil Yuri Khordinsky.

Frankie is a computer-whizz, but due to something that happened to her at home in South Africa, she’s now a stewardess on board Pushkin, a yacht owned by rich businessman Alex. But when Frankie gets to know Alex better, is her life ever going to be the same? Peaches Gold is a high-class prostitute, running her own female-escort service (to put it politely!), and she knows secrets about the biggest names in Hollywood, but does someone know a secret about her? Finally, Lady Emma Harvey lives in England with her husband, who’s about to open a Platinum mine in Russia.

But when Emma is shocked to her core, will she get to the bottom of what really happened? The three women are unlikely allies, but they decide together, they have to bring down Yuri Khordinsky and make him pay for the tragedies he has caused.
