Book Review: Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella

sophieconfessionsshopaholicMeet Rebecca Bloomwood. She’s a journalist. She spends her working life telling others how to manage their money. She spends her leisure time …shopping. Retail therapy is the answer to all her problems.

She knows she should stop, but she can’t. She tries Cutting Back, she tries Making More Money. But neither seems to work. The stories she concocts become more and more fantastic as she tries to untangle her increasingly dire financial difficulties.

Her only comfort is to buy herself something - just a little something …Can Becky ever escape from this dream world, find true love, and regain the use of her Switch card? Confessions of a Shopaholic …the perfect pick me up for when it’s all hanging in the (bank) balance.

You can’t deny it: Confessions of a Shopaholic is one of the best chick-lit novels around. Becky Bloomwood is a hilarious character you can’t help but love. From lying to Luke Brandon to get £20 to pay for a Denny and George scarf and saying it’s for her dying aunt, to all the hilarious letters to and from her bank manager, Confessions of a Shopaholic is a fast-paced read that just makes you want to keep reading.

There’s also the whole Finnish fiasco as well as getting a job as an assistant in a clothes shop before getting fired hours later.

There’s not only the superficial things that make Becky a great character, she goes into battle with the aforementioned Luke Brandon and comes out on top as well as standing up to him at many points.

You obviously can’t help but get frustrated how she keeps ignoring her VISA bills yet it’s still funny - the means she goes to avoid meeting her bank manager - her broken leg, illness…. the list is endless.

I also love all the other characters; Suze, Becky’s best friend, Becky’s parents, her bank manager and Tarquin, the millionaire relative of Suze’s. It’s just a great novel that you can easily read any time you need a pick me up.

It is an incredibly funny read, that is what Sophie Kinsella does best. I loved all the other Shopaholics, they are all as funny and Becky is always as dippy, yet the original is definitely my favourite.
