Why we like/dislike it: The cover for Shirley Benton’s debut novel’s paperback release is vastly different to its original and, in my opinion, it’s miles better. The colours are beautiful, looking like a Vegas sunset (not that I’ve ever seen a Vegas sunset…) and the pinks used just pop really nicely. I like that the title takes precedence and that it’s the first thing your eyes are drawn to when you look at the cover. For me, it works. For me, it would definitely be noticed should I see it in a book shop and I would definitely pick it up.

Would we buy the book based on its cover? Yes!

Why we like/dislike it: I adore winter book covers, and this is yet another one that I love! The past few book covers from Lucy Dillon have been gorgeous, and this one has certainly followed suit. The lovely white of the snow, contrasted with the deep pinky/red of the writing, and the small image of the woman and the dog works so well, and I think it depicts a quinessential English winter scene really well. It would definitely make me pick it up off the bookshelf, and I think anyone who loves wintery chick lit books is going to love this cover too… what’s to dislike?!

Do Judge A Book By Its Cover: The Time of my Life

Why we like/dislike it: Cecelia Ahern has had some very pretty covers. Her publishers know what works - simplicity is key for Cecelia’s novels and they use patterns and swirls and contrasting colours to create simple masterpieces. There’s no doubt that, for me, The Book of Tomorrow is my favourite Cecelia Ahern cover but I think The Time of My Life is just as beautiful and I think the gold will really pop against the dark blue in a hardback format. I can’t wait to see it properly, it’s just so gorgeous.

Do Judge A Book By Its Cover: Pear Shaped

Why we like/dislike it: I’ve been looking forward to this book for a while now so imagine my disappointment when I saw the cover for the book… awful! I can’t stand white backgrounds for book covers, they look really bland, but combine it with the bright red and magenta pink, well I just feel it looks dated and awful. I can’t say too much for the graphic either, it doesn’t seem to tell us anything about the book and looks like a bit of clip art stuck on the side. Also, the author’s name at the top is far too small and in light green(?!) which doesn’t fit in with the rest of theme and just looks a bit silly. Such a bad cover, and I certainly don’t think I’d look twice at this cover. What a pity!

Do Judge A Book By Its Cover: Strings Attached

Why we like/dislike it: Mandy Baggot has self-published three novels so far and none of the covers have really taken my fancy. However for the release of her fourth novel Strings Attached, Mandy has clearly had a re-think on her covers and has come back with one that looks like an actual, proper book cover. The night sky (with stars!), the silhouettes, the title font, it’s actually really lovely. I wouldn’t hesitate to pick it up, because it’s a genuinely nice cover!

Do Judge A Book By Its Cover: The Real Katie Lavender

Why we like/dislike it: I hate to say it, but this could just be one of the worst book covers I have ever seen. It is so uninspiring it’s untrue. The picture is generic, naff and boring, the text looks a bit cheap even though the lavender colour does tie in nicely. The off-white background also looks so unbelievably dull. It seems like they did this cover on the cheap, with as little effort going into it as possible. I’ve shown this to two other people who also agree with me they wouldn’t look twice at this book with its cover. I can’t understand or fathom why the publishers would choose to put this image on a book cover, it’s simply dire.

Do Judge A Book By Its Cover: Not Quite A Fairy Tale

Why we like/dislike it: This cover is a bit of a strange one. I like it, but then there is something about it that I don’t quite like, although it’s hard to put my finger on it. I really like the style and colour of the text, it stands out and I think the text style is really pretty, it’d certainly catch my eye. However, the image in the top left is just awful and just looks a bit like an after-thought to me. I have to say the beige background isn’t particularly inspiring either! However, I do think I’d pick it up simply to see what it’s about based on the title which is really catchy, and it’s certainly an improvement based on the previous cover for this book, which was awful!

Why we like/dislike it: Amy Silver’s new book cover is very busy. When I first saw it, I couldn’t for the life of me pick anything out because there’s just so much happening! But as you look at it more, it begins to come to life. London, the water, the boat, the fireworks. I love the colours used, the purples and blues and it’s definitely a cover that grows on me the more I look at it. I do feel the title colour and the font used isn’t particularly amazing - it doesn’t really pop but I think if it’s raised on the proper cover, it’ll look brilliant. Definitely a nice cover, and one I’d pick up, it would definitely catch my eye.
