Book Awards 2010: Readers Choice Book of the Year Award

Posted on Wednesday, October 6th, 2010 by Leah

This year Chloe, Danielle and myself have decided to add a new category for our Book Awards, which are coming in December, where our readers (that’s you!) can vote for what they think is their favourite book of the year. First, though, we need some contenders. So please put in your top three choices for favourite book of 2010 (and that has been released in 2010) into the Google form below and at the end of November we’ll tally up the votes and the three with the most votes will be made into a poll in December before the ultimate winner is announced during the Chick Lit Reviews Awards 2010! You can find the list of 2010 releases on our Release Dates page here.

Please note that you CANNOT enter the same book three times and that book choices MUST have been released in 2010 otherwise your entries will be deleted.

Chick Flick Tuesday: Sleepless in Seattle

Posted on Tuesday, October 5th, 2010 by Danielle

Chick Flick Tuesday highlights the best chick flicks in the movie world as well as bringing you news on upcoming chick flick releases as well as letting you all know about which chick lit books are being made into chick flick movies!

This week I chose Sleepless in Seattle, starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, as our Chick Flick Tuesday. It’s one of those movies that even when I see the poster image I’m immediately swept back into the movie. A young boy struggling to help his father move past his own mother’s death by doing what only a 9/10 year old boy could do, calls a talk radio show looking for a new mom. Through a random series of events his dad, played by Tom Hanks, and Annie, played by Meg Ryan, end up on top of the empire state building in New York City. With references to one of the greatest films ever, An Affair to Remember, and including a hit song by Celine Dion, “When I Fall In Love”, this is a Chick Flick not to miss!

“When Sam’s (Tom Hanks) son, Jonah (Ross Malinger), calls into a talk radio program looking for a new mother, Sam ends up getting on the phone and laments about his lost love. Thousands of miles away, Annie (Meg Ryan) hears the program and immediately falls in love with Sam, despite the fact that she has never met him and that she is engaged to humdrum Walter (Bill Pullman). Believing they are meant to be together, Annie sets out for Seattle to meet Sam, who, meanwhile, contends with an onslaught of letters from available women equally touched by his phone call.”

Cover Wars: House Rules by Jodi Picoult

Posted on Tuesday, October 5th, 2010 by Leah

The paperback of Jodi Picoult’s latest book House Rules is out in November and has had a cover change from the original. I like the new cover (right) a lot but the hardback cover portrays the story more with the multi-coloured blanket!

Jacob Hunt is a teenager: brilliant at maths, wicked sense of humour, extraordinarily organised, hopeless at reading social cues. And Jacob has Asperger’s. He is locked in his own world – aware of the world outside, and wanting to make a connection. Jacob tries to be like everyone else, but doesn’t know how.

When his tutor is found dead, all the hallmark behaviours of Jacob’s syndrome – not looking someone in the eye, odd movements, inappropriate actions – start looking a lot like guilt to the police. And Jacob’s mother must ask herself the hardest question in the world: is her child capable of murder?

Book Deal: Sphere acquires 4 new chick lit authors

Posted on Tuesday, October 5th, 2010 by Chloe

Publishers Sphere have acquired some great names for their chick lit catalogue as of late. We already knew that Carole Matthews and Eleanor Moran would be making the move, and it seems others are following suit.

Lucy-Anne Holmes and Fiona Walker are also both going to be making the move to Sphere for their new books, and it’ll be interesting to see how that affects their books, and especially their book covers! Congrats to Sphere on their new acquisitions!

Book Review: Famous Last Words by Annie Sanders

Posted on Monday, October 4th, 2010 by Chloe

Lucy Streeter thought she had her life pretty sussed out. She runs a clothes shop, where she also gets to show off her own designs that she does in her own spare time, she’s mum to her grown up son Nat who is at University, and she gets on really well with the other occupants of Paradise Street, where their shops are based. However, Lucy decides to pay a visit to a fortune teller one day, and finds out a bit of shocking news… she has just days to live. Lucy is horrified that her time on Earth is nearly up, and makes some radical decision and changes that the old Lucy never would have done. Is Lucy going to be able to make the most of her last few days with her family and friends, or is it just too little, too late?

    Cover Stories: Christine Stovell

Posted on Monday, October 4th, 2010 by Leah

A brand new feature on Chicklitreviews.com is Cover Stories! We have noticed that book covers are a huge part of a books appeal whether we like to admit it or not, and the age old adage “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” is less relevant now than it has ever been! Therefore, we’ve taken it upon ourselves for this new feature to quiz a whole lot of chick lit authors, some who have been around the genre for a good few years, some debut authors, about the importance of their book covers, and what they mean to them. We hope you like the feature!

This week on ‘Cover Stories’ is debut author Christine Stovell, whose book Turning The Tide was released earlier this year and which I really enjoyed! Take it away, Christine!

“My heart was pounding as I waited for the file marked ‘Turning the Tide – Visuals’ to download. This was the moment I’d dreamt of for years; my first sight of that all-important cover art for my debut novel. Months of work going into … what? I’d expected a few tears, but not of disappointment! My initial reaction was that even Katie Fforde would struggle to shift some of these, let alone a complete unknown like me!

Nipping a potential Authorzilla moment in the bud, Lyn Vernham, Choc Lit’s Marketing Director, quickly explained that these were concepts, initial thoughts on how my novel might be represented. In fact, one of the joys about working with the Choc Lit team is how much care goes into creating the right cover. A couple of weeks later, when the final design arrived, I couldn’t have been happier. I’d always visualised Harry, my heroine, as a lone figure fighting to preserve everything she holds dear about her sleepy seaside town, and there she was, bless her, sitting on a rock gazing towards the place she loves. I also love the colours which perfectly evoke the mood of the book.

What the photo can’t convey is how well-produced Choc Lit books are; the matt silver font used for the title of Turning the Tide looks beautiful and the novel’s something I’m really proud to show off. When I held a copy of my book for the first time I shed a few more tears – but this time they were of pure happiness!”

Book News: Breaking The Silence by Diane Chamberlain

Posted on Monday, October 4th, 2010 by Leah

Diane Chamberlain’s latest novel to be released in the UK Breaking The Silence was originally due out in January 2011 but has been brought forward and will now be released on 17th December 2010. I absolutely love the sound of the book, and the cover is gorgeous too. Here’s the synopsis:

Laura Brandon’s promise to her dying father was simple: to visit an elderly woman she’d never heard him speak of before. A woman who remembers nothing - except the distant past. Visiting Sarah Tolley seemed a small enough sacrifice to make. But Laura’s promise results in another death - her husband’s. And after their five-year-old daughter, Emma, witnesses her father’s suicide, Emma refuses to talk about it…or to talk at all. Frantic and guilt-ridden, Laura contacts the only person who may be able to help, a man she’s met only once before - a man who doesn’t know he’s Emma’s real father. Guided only by a child’s silence and an old woman’s fading memories, the two unravel a tale of love and despair, bravery and unspeakable evil. This is a tale that links them all. It is a tale shrouded in silence…
