American Saturdays Cover Wars: Brava, Valentine by Adriana Trigiani

Posted on Saturday, October 9th, 2010 by Danielle

Released in February in hardback Brava, Valentine by Adriana Trigiani is now coming to the States in paperback with a fresh new cover. The paperback edition coming November 19 features a more whimsical city scene that I rather prefer, not as serious as the first. I’m definitely looking forward to reviewing this one in the near future for an upcoming book tour. Tell me, what do you think? Regardless of hardback or paperback, which cover do you prefer and why?

As Brava, Valentine begins, snow falls like glitter over Tuscany at the wedding of her grandmother, Teodora, and longtime love, Dominic. Valentine’s dreams are dashed when Gram announces that Alfred, “the prince,” Valentine’s only brother and nemesis, has been named her partner at Angelini Shoes. Devastated, Valentine falls into the arms of Gianluca, a sexy Tuscan tanner who made his romantic intentions known on the Isle of Capri. Despite their passion for one another and Gianluca’s heartfelt letters, a long-distance relationship seems impossible.

As Valentine turns away from romance and devotes herself to her work, mentor and pattern cutter June Lawton guides her through her power struggle with Alfred, while best friend and confidante Gabriel Biondi moves into 166 Perry Street, transforming her home and point of view. Savvy financier Bret Fitzpatrick, Valentine’s first love and former fiancée who still carries a torch for her, encourages Valentine to exploit her full potential as a designer and a business woman with a plan that will bring her singular creations to the world.

A once-in-a-lifetime business opportunity takes Valentine from the winding streets of Greenwich Village to the sun-kissed cobblestones of Buenos Aires, where she finds a long-buried secret hidden deep within a family scandal. Once unearthed, the truth rocks the Roncallis and Valentine is determined to hold her family together. More so, she longs to create one of her own, but is torn between a past love that nurtured her, and a new one that promises to sustain her.

Book Review: The Perfect Couple? by Robyn Sisman

Posted on Friday, October 8th, 2010 by Leah

Kate and Rikki have been married for two years and understand completely how the other works, knowing they don’t have to be together 24/7 and that with both of them being barristers, sometimes work comes first. When Rikki lands the case of his career, helping Cassandry Carnaby in her high-profile divorce, Kate can’t help but feel a bit jealous it isn’t her working the case, or a case like it.

Until her mentor Angus invites her in to join a high-profile case of her own: helping Jez Benson, and, more importantly, opposing her husband Rikki. Rikki is furious with Kate for taking the case and suddenly their happy, easy-going marriage has done a complete 180 and has hit the skids. As Kate and Rikki pull in opposite directions as they each help out their clients, it suddenly seems as if marriage was a bad idea.

Can Kate and Rikki put the court case aside to sort out their own lives or will they both fight so hard to win the battle that they completely forget they ever loved each other in the first place?

    Industry Interview: Maura Brickell, Headline

Posted on Friday, October 8th, 2010 by Leah

A while ago we got to interview the very lovely Maura Brickell who works for Headline Publishing, and I can’t believe it’s taken so long for us to post it up! Maura has been a fantastic help to us, keeping us afloat of upcoming titles, letting us run some fab comps as well as great interviews with some wonderful authors! So, enjoy the interview, I know I did!

    1. Can you tell us, in as little detail or as much detail as you wish, what exactly it is you do within the publishing industry?

I am Publicity Manager at the very fabulous Headline Publishing Group. It’s tricky to describe exactly what it is I do, but in a nutshell: I am responsible for planning, creating and delivering PR campaigns for approx 6 books a month. This means that I make sure that the book and the author are promoted in the right interviews, features or reviews in magazines, online websites and blogs, in newspapers, on television and on the radio. I also organise events to promote the author and their book, so bookshop events, festivals and library talks. Every campaign is different because every author and book is. I work very closely with authors every day, which is definitely one of my favourite aspects of the job.

    2. What was your road to working in publicity?

I got very lucky and wangled a job in the Editorial Department at Bloomsbury after completing a months work experience. I worked as Editorial Assistant to the Editor in Chief, Alexandra Pringle, so it was very much like jumping into the deep end whilst working out how to write rejection letters! The bright lights of the Publicity Department caught my attention early on, so I helped out at events with the Bloomsbury team and when a job came up at Headline I applied straight away. I started as an assistant to the Director, Georgina Moore, which meant I got the chance to work on so very big books, such as Bobby Charlton, Kathleen Turner and Penny Vincenzi, and I’ve worked my way up from there!

‘Not Exactly Chick Lit But…’: The Best Friend’s Guide to Life

Posted on Friday, October 8th, 2010 by Leah

‘Not Exactly Chick Lit But…’ is a new feature on Chick Lit Reviews highlighting some books that are not exactly Chick Lit (hence the title) but that our Chick Lit readers will probably enjoy! Let me know if there’s a book you would suggest for my new feature!

This week’s book The Best Friend’s Guide To Life seems like the perfect book for Chick Lit fans, that isn’t exactly Chick Lit! It’s written by Fearne Cotton and Holly Willougby - real life best friends - and sounds like a perfect read for best friends, or just anyone wondering what it is that makes a good friend! I for one love the sound of it!

What makes a great friend? Has Facebook ruined dating? What’s the secret to effortless style? “Hello! This is a book written by proper best friends - us! - who have been hanging out together for over ten years. We thought that if we shared some of our own experiences and views on friendship, relationships, leaving home, studying or starting a new job, then it might help you on your own journey. Inside you’ll find loads of stories - some funny, some sad, and some that make us cringe with embarrassment - as well as tips and advice on things like dating and looking good. We’ve included our best photos from over the years (even the dodgy ones!) and drawings that Fearne has done especially. Let’s face it, life isn’t easy at times so we hope that this book will make you laugh, entertain you, but most of all that it might be a bit like talking to your very best friend.”

Chick Lit Classic: The Motherhood Walk of Fame by Shari Low

Posted on Thursday, October 7th, 2010 by Chloe

Chick Lit Classics is a regular feature on Chick Lit Reviews where we highlight the books we feel are classics of the chick lit genre. Feel free to discuss our choices in the comments section!

This week I’ve chosen the 2007 release The Motherhood Walk of Fame by Shari Low. I read this book a couple of years ago, and it really is laugh out loud funny which is fab, not many books make me laugh out loud! It’s about a housewife, Carly Cooper who finds herself in Hollywood with her young family unexpectedly. It’s a great romp through Hollywood, and of a British housewife trying to fit in in a whole new world to her. Low’s writing is really quick and witty, and if you love light-hearted and funny books, make sure you pick up a copy of The Motherhood Walk of Fame!

“Carly Cooper, harassed mother and disillusioned writer, has often been tempted to head for the hills. She just never imagined they’d be the Hollywood ones! A hilarious romantic comedy for anyone who’s ever had their head in the clouds! Carly’s living the dream. Almost. She has the kids, the husband, the lethargic sex life, and who cares if her novels aren’t exactly bestsellers — pole-vaulting her ironing pile is excitement enough. Just when she’s resigned to domestic mediocrity, a phone call from Hollywood changes everything. Carly is off to Tinseltown! As she arrives in LA, Carly knows life will be transformed!but she doesn’t count on marital disaster, a career roller-coaster and an A-list movie star who wants to offer her more than just a friendly welcome. Carly Cooper is strutting along the Hollywood Walk of Fame but can she get to the end without falling flat on her face?”

    Author Guest Post: Samantha Carbon

Posted on Thursday, October 7th, 2010 by Leah

Samantha Carbon’s debut novel All That Glitters was released in June and Samantha has written us an Author Article on why she decided to go down the self-publishing route rather than going through the usual channels of waiting for an official publisher to put in an offer. It’s a great insight into the world of self-publishing, enjoy!

I decided to go down the self publishing route to avoid being rejected. By self publishing I was self helping. At the start of writing All That Glitters it felt like the beginning of a counselling session. I knew I would have to commit., but the excitement at the beginning took over me. My head was full of ideas and scenarios, but I didn’t know how to explore and put them onto paper. As I began to write, my thoughts were becoming less heavy and the words began to flow and it was half way through writing the manuscript I decided there is no way, I will send my work to a literary agency for it to be potentially rejected. I had read all the horror stories, writers not hearing back from publishers, writers being charged to read their manuscripts. The thought of an office junior reading my manuscript, judging me made my decision to self publish easy.

The amount of time and effort I invested in writing All That Glitters was too precious. The knowledge my manuscript would potentially collect dust in a room with other unread manuscripts would keep me awake at night. I wasn’t going to let this happen.

I allocated some cash and worked towards All That Glitters going into print in time for my 40th birthday. I have had no regrets. The communication between myself and Authorhouse has been at all times professional. Words cant describe the feeling I felt, when I held my book in print the first time.

I couldn’t believe how professional my book looked. It was well worth the investment. Some may say, why not take the chance in sending off to literary agents, to save me the bother of having to self promote. I did my research on the internet and realised there are loads of writers out there trying to be the next J K Rowling. I am totally in control of how well my book performs. The feedback has been positive. For me, my personal achievement was getting my book out there. The words on the paper are worth reading.

Working with a lot of smart people, many have said they would like to write a book. I’m not sure what is stopping them. Time, discipline and patience were key factors. I had a lot of time back in 2004 when I began All That Glitters and I procrastinated along with every other writer. If writing is something one enjoys doing, then one finds the time. As previous mentioned, I was at the start of a long therapy session, my session is now complete. So, to all you buddy writers, take the self publishing route, I did and I’m totally healed.

Posted on Wednesday, October 6th, 2010 by Leah

Two years ago, Andy went travelling with best friend Lexi, determined to have some fun together whilst they visited new places. What Andy didn’t expect was to come back from the trip, bruised, broken and scarred with Lexi missing after a catastrophic accident. Two years down the line, Andy is little more than a hermit, living her life without leaving her apartment, with the only time she ever goes out having to be in total darkness so nobody sees her scar.

She knows that it’s no way to live, so when her sister Kate’s flat burns down, she agrees Kate and her boyfriend Luke can move in with her and her cat, Baz. Andy soon realises that despite everything she has gone through, and is still feeling, it isn’t just her who was affected the day of the accident and realises that she’s been hiding for too long and needs to change her life and stop being scared of what other people think. It’s not easy for her, even more so since she still wonders exactly what happened to best friend Lexi, and is desperate for any kind of closure.
