American Saturdays: I Heart New York by Lindsey Kelk
October 2nd, 2010 by Danielle
Angela Clark is in love—with the most fabulous city in the world!
When Angela catches her boyfriend with another woman at her best friend’s wedding, she’s heartbroken and desperate to run away. With little more than a crumpled bridesmaid dress, a pair of Louboutins, and her passport in hand, Angela decides to jump on a plane for . . . NYC!
Settling into a cute hotel and quickly bonding with benevolent concierge Jenny—a chatterbox Oprah wannabe with room for a new best friend—Angela heads out for a New York makeover, some serious retail therapy, and a whirlwind tour of the city. Before she knows it, she’s dating two sexy guys and blogging about her Big Apple escapades for a real fashion magazine. But while it’s one thing telling readers about your romantic dilemmas, it’s another working them out for yourself. Angela has fallen head over heels for the city that never sleeps, but does she heart New York more than home?
Angela, recently shocked by the sudden discovery of her fiance with another woman in the back of their car, has decided the best way to face the problem is not to. Within mere hours of her discovery Angela Clark decides the best resolution for her problem is to jump on a plane to New York City. Upon arrival she quickly discovers that she could easily make her way in the Big Apple with the help of a new friend, Jenny, a complete make over, a few good shopping trips and of course, boys. It all seems so easy and there’s so much to love in New York, but is it really what it seems?
Love. I’ve struggled for quite a while to determine exactly how to explain how I feel about this wonderful book, and it’s not getting any easier. From beginning to end it took me about five hours total to read I Heart New York, and I didn’t put the book down a single time. I absolutely adored each and every page. Within a few pages Lindsey Kelk had me flipping page after page, laughing and really enjoying what I was reading. Which, according to Kelk is exactly why both her and her character, Angela, write…”I love to make people happy and make them laugh” (taken from Chloe’s interview from Aug. 2009).
Kelk’s portrayal of Angela discovering her then boyfriend Mark with another girl was brilliant. Angela reacts the exact way any girl in her situation would dream of reacting. Her boyfriend/fiance of ten years was cheating on her and all of her closest friends knew about, so who wouldn’t break the groom’s hand with their Louboutins, call their friends and now ex out in the middle of a crowded wedding reception? Angela was refreshing to read. A “real” character with absolutely human experiences and feelings.
Not only was Angela brilliant, but the entire cast of characters were people you’d want to go to lunch with and hang out with in your spare time. Jenny and Erin were friends I could definitely imagine going out with in the evening or just watching Friends with on the weekends. And what are the odds that Angela would happen upon two incredibly amazing guys in her first week in New York? Both Tyler and Alex were wonderful in their own ways, though from the very beginning I was rooting for Alex; it’s all about the bad boy image.
Lindsey Kelk’s I Heart series is exactly what readers of Chick Lit will love, and I’m not an exception. Not only was Angela a delightfully compelling character, but the setting of New York City added so much to the story. As someone who was already in love with the city it reminded me of all the reasons I’m dying to go back very soon. In addition to this, Angela’s struggle to come to terms with the path her life has taken over the last few years was extremely compelling. I’m very excited that I Heart New York was finally released in the US this month and am looking forward to future installments in Angela’s ongoing journey.
