American Weekends Book Review: Save as Draft by Cavanaugh Lee

Posted By Danielle on January 30th, 2011

A broken engagement, a broken heart, and endless drafts of unsent emails. A love triangle unfolding in the electronic age illustrates all that can go wrong (and right) by this new form of miscommunication. Told in “electro-epistolary” form, the novel unfolds entirely through emails and text messages. What do these tools of technology mean for love? What happens when age-old courtship rituals fall prey to the ever-changing sensibilities of how we share not only information, but our own hearts?

SAVE AS DRAFT @Readers A love triangle evolving over e-mails, texts, and Facebook messages that makes you wonder if the things we leave unsaid—or rather unsent—could change the story of our lives.

Danielle’s Most Anticipated Releases of 2011

Posted By Danielle on January 23rd, 2011

Seeing as Leah and Chloe both posted their Top Ten Most Anticipated Releases of 2011 recently. I thought this would be the perfect time for me to draw up a list of my own! There are so many great books coming out this year, a couple that have just barely come out and a few already in my to-be-read pile that I’m pining over. Another factor in the books I’m pick has to do with my fellow reviewers here at Chick Lit Reviews. Quite a few of the books on my list are ones that have already been released in the UK and they have already been able to read & review. Needless to say, I’ve been dying to get my hands on them!

So without further adieu, my most anticipated books for 2011…

1. The Peach Keeper by Sarah Addison Allen - This is a very obvious choice for me. Many of you know I’m a huge fan of Sarah Addison Allen and the magical realism she weaves into her stories. They’re beautiful! If you’re a Cecilia Ahern fan then this book may be the book to pick up! I’ve already pre-ordered my copy in fact.

2. Skipping a Beat by Sarah Pekkanen - Pekkanen’s writing is so beautiful and her examination of the relationships we have with others is so perfect. Her novel out last year, The Opposite of Me, was one that readers were talking about for weeks after it came out and I’m definitely not going to miss a chance to join in the chatter. It’s going to be wonderful I’m sure!

3. The Uncoupling by Meg Wolitzer - I have this one coming up for a book tour and I’m so intrigued by the premise. A strange “spell” is cast over the town and suddenly the women turn away from their husbands and boyfriends for no apparent reason. It’s so intriguing and the obvious discussion that comes after throughout the book is bound to be great!

4. I Heart Hollywood by Lindsey Kelk - So, I know, many of you are saying “that book is already out.” Well, not technically here in the US. Here it hasn’t officially been released. I’m hoping for it this year, but we’ll see. I may have to have it shipped from overseas because I truly loved the first in the series!

5. The Very Picture of You by Isabel Wolff - Again, like Sarah Addison Allen, Isabel Wolff is one of my absolute favorite Chick Lit/Women’s Fiction writers. Her books are vivid and beautifully written. This is one I’m dying to read!

6. The Liberation of Alice Love & The Anti-Prom by Abby McDonald - Another one that is out in the UK, but not in America. Leah absolutely adored the first book listed and I cannot wait to read it. McDonald’s writing is fantastic! I know I’m going to adore both of these books!

7. The Bird Sisters by Rebecca Rasmussen - A book about sisters with an incredible cover, truly! That’s the extremely shortened version of this story, but one I’m dying to read. I actually heard about it from the author via Twitter and ever since I’ve not been able to stop thinking about it.

8. The Violets of March by Sarah Jio - Another book I initially heard about while buzzing about on Twitter. I actually recently posted the book trailer, it was what hooked me and I’d highly recommend watching it…that is unless you don’t want to get stuck in a great book?

9. Then Came You by Jennifer Weiner - So, I’ve been reading a lot of Jennifer Weiner recently. I have a short story of her’s on my Nook right now called The Half Life that I’m completely enthralled with. This is a no-brainer for me, I’m definitely picking this one up!

10. Love by Cecelia Ahern - I’ve just finished reading The Book of Tomorrow, which was incredible and I’ll be posting a review for soon, and so when I saw Leah include this on her list, I knew I wanted it as well. Her writing is magical and just something you can’t help but want to keep reading. I can’t wait to read this one!

So, what do you think? Have you already read some of these? Are there any that you know you’ll be picking up as well?

American Saturdays Book News: The Pioneer Woman Black Heels to Tractor Wheels by Ree Drummond

Posted By Danielle on January 22nd, 2011

Anyone who is anyone in the US who loves blogs, food, and plain old fun stories about a city girl being transplanted to country life knows exactly who Ree Drummond is. But for those of you unfamiliar with Ree, or as she is more well know, The Pioneer Woman, you will definitely want to take a look at her blog and upcoming book. Well, both unfamiliar and familiar will want to in fact. Ree is one of the funniest and industrious ladies I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. Coming from a background that involved morning lattes and subway rides daily to a life of tractors and cow herding is only the tip of this incredible lady’s story. I for one am eagerly anticipating the arrival of my copy of Black Heels to Tractor Wheels: A Love Story and I know quite a few of our readers will be to! Out in time for Valentine’s Day (Feb. 01, 2011), this is the perfect story to have you swooning for your very own “cowboy.” Take a look at The Pioneer Woman site and the book synopsis below for more great details…

“That’s when I saw him—the cowboy—across the smoky room.”

I’ll never forget that night. It was like a romance novel, an old Broadway musical, and a John Wayne western rolled into one. Out for a quick drink with friends, I wasn’t looking to meet anyone, let alone a tall, rugged cowboy who lived on a cattle ranch miles away from my cultured, corporate hometown. But before I knew it, I’d been struck with a lightning bolt . . . and I was completely powerless to stop it.

Read along as I recount the rip-roaring details of my unlikely romance with a chaps-wearing cowboy, from the early days of our courtship (complete with cows, horses, prairie fire, and passion) all the way through the first year of our marriage, which would be filled with more challenge and strife—and manure—than I ever could have expected.

This isn’t just my love story; it’s a universal tale of passion, romance, and all-encompassing love that sweeps us off our feet.

It’s the story of a cowboy.

And Wranglers.

And chaps.

And the girl who fell in love with them.

American Saturdays Book News: Winter Bloom by Tara Heavey

Posted By Danielle on September 25th, 2010

Tara Heavey’s newest release, Winter Bloom is due out October 12, 2025, looks like the perfect blend of wintry weather and splash of spring. Not only that but the story of a mother moving forward with the help of friends and a hopeful garden sounds uplifting. Take a look at the synopsis and let me know what you think…

There would be tunnels of roses, beds of strawberries, fountains of overflowing herbs. And there might even be love. . . .

In the heart of bustling modern Dublin is a littered, overgrown garden of tangled weeds and a stagnant, hidden pond. Belonging to an iron-willed elderly lady named Mrs. Prendergast, who is rumored to have murdered and buried her husband there, the garden draws Eva Madigan, a young mother struggling to move on from the pain of her past. Eva is joined by Emily, a beautiful but withdrawn college dropout; Uri, an old-world immigrant; Seth, his all-too-handsome son; and occasionally even Mrs. Prendergast herself. Even as Mrs. Prendergast puts the land up for sale, the thorny lives of all the gardeners are revealed and slowly start to untangle. Overgrown secrets are dug up and shared. Choices are made; a little pruning is in order. Now Eva is about to discover that every garden is a story of growth toward a final harvest. . . .

American Saturdays Book News: Maybe This Time by Jennifer Crusie

Posted By Danielle on August 28th, 2010

Out this week, 31st of August to be exact, is Jennifer Crusie’s most recently release Maybe This Time. I’m dying to read it! Honestly when I originally saw the cover posted at Tales of Whimsy I wanted to get my hands on it as soon as possible. As it turns out, I’m going to be picking it up this week for sure and hoping to be reading it very very soon! What do you think? Love the cover as much as I do? Here’s the synopsis:

Andie Miller is ready to move on in life. She wants to marry her fiancé and leave behind everything in her past, especially her ex-husband, North Archer. But when Andie tries to gain closure with him, he asks one final favor of her before they go their separate ways forever. A very distant cousin of his has died and left North as the guardian of two orphans who have driven out three nannies already, and things are getting worse. He needs a very special person to take care of the situation and he knows Andie can handle anything. When Andie meets the two children she quickly realizes things are much worse than she feared. The place is a mess, the children, Carter and Alice, aren’t your average delinquents, and the creepy old house where they live is being run by the worst housekeeper since Mrs. Danvers. What’s worse, Andie’s fiancé thinks this is all a plan by North to get Andie back, and he may be right. Andie’s dreams have been haunted by North since she arrived at the old house. And that’s not the only haunting. What follows is a hilarious adventure in exorcism, including a self-doubting parapsychologist, an annoyed medium, her Tarot-card reading mother, an avenging ex-mother-inlaw, and, of course, her jealous fiancé. And just when she thinks things couldn’t get more complicated, North shows up on the doorstep making her wonder if maybe this time things could be different between them. If Andie can just get rid of all the guests and ghosts, she’s pretty sure she can save the kids, and herself, from the past. But fate might just have another thing in mind…

American Saturdays Book Review: The Starlet by Mary McNamara

Posted By Danielle on August 21st, 2010

It’s a not-so-well-respected rule in Hollywood that what happens on location stays on location. But when a hot young leading man winds up dead in his Rome hotel room, his costar’s life is about to go off the rails in a very public way—even by celeb standards.

At the tender age of twenty-three, Mercy Talbot has won an Oscar, battled addiction, wrecked more than her share of cars, and burned down her house. Her look-alike mother keeps her on a tight leash (and fueled with an endless supply of OxyContin and cocaine) and her producers demand a grueling schedule. By the time she stumbles across Juliette Greyson, a Hollywood insider on a much-needed vacation, Mercy is surrounded by photographers and about to emerge drunk, high, and naked from a public fountain. Whisking her away to an idyllic Tuscan ‘retreat,’ Juliette is about to discover another rule of Hollywood: wherever the starlet may go, the drama will follow.

Posted By Danielle on August 21st, 2010

Jane Porter, author of Mrs. Perfect and Easy on the Eyes has a new release out this week! And though, I’m not a huge fan of this particular cover, the synopsis for She’s Gone Country sounds quite good and I’m definitely eager to get through my reading pile so I can read this one. It’s out August 23rd and September 28th in the UK. Let me know, what do you think of the cover? Do you think you’ll pick it up based on Porter’s reputation and the book’s synopsis? Take a look:

Shey Darcy, a 39-year-old former top model for Vogue and Sports Illustrated led a charmed life in New York City with a handsome photographer husband until the day he announced he’d fallen in love with someone else. Left to pick up the pieces of her once happy world, Shey decides to move back home to Texas with her three teenage sons. Life on the family ranch, however, brings with it a whole new host of dramas starting with differences of opinion with her staunch Southern Baptist mother, her rugged but overprotective brothers, and daily battles with her three sons who are also struggling to find themselves. Add to the mix Shey’s ex-crush, Dane Kelly, a national bullriding champ and she’s got her hands full. It doesn’t take long before Shey realizes that in order to reinvent herself, she must let go of an uncertain future and a broken past, to find happiness-and maybe love-in the present.
