American Saturdays Book Review: J’adore New York by Isabella Lafleche

Posted on Saturday, September 11th, 2010 by Danielle

When Catherine Lambert, an effortlessly chic Parisian lawyer, receives an offer to transfer to the New York office of her prestigious firm, she unhesitatingly accepts. A dedicated follower of fashion and everything stylish, she is determined to conquer the high-flying world of Manhattan law — and love. Catherine’s dreams of glamour fizzle quickly, however, when she is faced with the hard realities of her profession. The pressure of billable hours, the incessant demands of her impossible bosses, the conspiracies of two malicious secretaries and the advances of the lecherous client prompt her to question her career choice. But then she meets Jeffrey Richardson, a powerful client, and her New York life takes on the romance she’d hoped it would — until an unexpected request forces Catherine to re-evaluate the exclusive world she’s chosen for herself.

Book Review: Second Hand Heart by Catherine Ryan Hyde

Posted on Friday, September 10th, 2010 by Leah

Nineteen year old Vida isn’t like many girls her age. She can’t go to school, doesn’t have many friends, and can barely leave the house due to the fact her heart is failing and she desperately needs a transplant. When a heart becomes available, and the transplant is successful, Vida is determined to live life like never before.

When Vida meets Richard, the man whose wife’s heart now beats in Vida, she immediately falls in love with him but Richard dismisses her claims. How is it possible for Vida to love him when she doesn’t even know him? Could it be that the heart she now has beating in her chest is remembering the love for him, is that even possible? As Vida learns to live life again properly, she can’t shake the feeling that there’s somewhere she has to go and visit. But where?

Book Cover: Walking Back to Happiness by Lucy Dillon

Posted on Friday, September 10th, 2010 by Chloe

Another exclusive for you from Chicklitreviews! Here is the gorgeous new cover for Lucy Dillon’s third novel Walking Back to Happiness which is due out on 25th November this year. It’s another lovely wintery scene, and I am sure it will be as good, if not better(!), than Lucy’s previous novel Lost Dogs and Lonely Hearts which won the RNA Romantic Novel of the Year award 2010. Here’s the synopsis:

“Juliet’s been in hiding. From her family, from her life, but most of all from the fact that Ben’s not around anymore.

Her mother Diane can’t do anything to help. But, when she insists Juliet look after her elderly Labrador, it becomes clear that perhaps the dog, Coco, could help her daughter where she couldn’t.

Catching on, her neighbours ask Juliet for help with their pets too. But then so does Mark, the gorgeous spaniel-owner she meets out dogwalking. And before she knows it, Juliet realises she’s somehow become the town’s unofficial petsitter, and is now privy to all the lives and secrets of everyone whose animals she’s caring for.

But as her first winter alone approaches, she finally begins to wonder if it’s time to face up to her own secrets? To start rebuilding her own life? And maybe – just maybe – to fall in love again?”

Chick Lit Classic: Getting Rid of Matthew by Jane Fallon

Posted on Thursday, September 9th, 2010 by Chloe

Chick Lit Classics is a regular feature on Chick Lit Reviews where we highlight the books we feel are classics of the chick lit genre. Feel free to discuss our choices in the comments section!

This book might only be 3 years old, but I think it’s a great read and one worthy of the ‘Chick Lit Classic’ position this week! It is author Jane Fallon’s debut novel, and really came to promenence because of it being featured of Richard and Judy’s Book Club in 2007, and that’s how I found out about it. It sounded perfect for me, and I quickly got a copy from the library and I loved it. It’s the story of Helen and Matthew, a couple who have been having an affair for several years, but their relationship is turning a bit stale. Helen decides to get rid of Matthew but it isn’t as easy as it seems. It’s a very different view point of an affair, and I surprised myself in feeling sorry for the mistress as well as the wife in this tale! Brilliant reading, recommended by me.

“What to do if Matthew, your secret lover of the past four years, finally decides to leave his wife Sophie and their two daughters and move into your flat, just when you’re thinking that you might not want him anymore . . . PLAN A Stop shaving your armpits. And your bikini line. Tell him you have a moustache that you wax every six weeks Stop having sex with him Pick holes in the way he dresses. Don’t brush your teeth. Or your hair. Or pluck out the stray hag-whisker that grows out of your chin. Buy incontinence pads and leave them lying around PLAN B Accidentally on purpose bump into his wife Sophie Give yourself a fake name and identity Befriend Sophie Actually begin to really like Sophie Snog Matthew’s son (who’s the same age as you by the way. You’re not a paedophile) Buy a cat and give it a fake name and identity Befriend Matthew’s children. Unsuccessfully Watch your whole plan go absolutely horribly wrong Getting Rid of Matthew isn’t as easy as it seems, but along the way Helen will forge an unlikely friendship, find real love and realize that nothing ever goes exactly to plan . . .”

Book Deal Exclusive: Allie Spencer moves to Arrow

Posted on Thursday, September 9th, 2010 by Leah

Due to my excellent sleuthing skills (and inability to stop searching Amazon, no matter how fruitless sometimes), I managed to find myself an exciting exclusive book deal for the site! We interviewed the lovely Allie Spencer a while back (and have reviewed both of her fantastic Little Black Dress novels Tug of Love and The Not-So-Secret Diary of a City Girl) and she mentioned she was working on a third book but that nothing had come of it as of yet.

However we can now exclusively reveal that Allie Spencer has moved to Arrow (a part of the Random House group) and her first novel with them, Summer Loving, will be out on 26th May 2011. I for one can’t wait to see what the book is about and to see the cover they design for the book. If it’s anything like her LBD books, it’s going to be good!

    Congratulations Allie!

Book Cover: Comfort and Joy by India Knight

Posted on Thursday, September 9th, 2010 by Chloe

Author India Knight is back with her third fictional novel this November with her festive title Comfort and Joy. It’s due out on November 25th, and while I’m not keen on the cover, it certainly sounds like a book I would really like to read. Here’s the synopsis:

“It’s December 23rd and Clara Dunphy is running around Oxford Street like a blue-arsed fly trying to buy presents. She wants to make Christmas perfect: it’s a lifelong ambition. And a challenging one at the best of times, even without taking her fifteen guests - sorry, “loved ones” - and their varying degrees of social disfunction into account. Meanwhile, something weird has happened to her marriage, and the ho, ho, ho is thin on the ground. Why does Christmas have such an emotional hold over us? Why does family stuff hit the peak of its madness on December the 25th? And is it okay to want more than you have, when what you have seems so enviable from the outside? A blackly funny, tender dissection of the meaning of love – family love, sibling love, children love – Comfort and Joy will make you laugh and cry.”

Book Review: The Affair by Santa Montefiore

Posted on Wednesday, September 8th, 2010 by Chloe

Children’s book author Angelica is quite happy with her lot. She has a successful career, 2 beautiful children and a French husband who works hard for his family in the world of banking. They have a very comfortable existence, and although the excitement in her marriage has petered out a little, Angelica still feels lucky with her life. However, when she meets South African wine maker Jack, she doesn’t expect to develop strong feelings for him, so much so that she is willing to risk her safe and stable family life just for a few moments of passion with Jack. But after they embark on their affair, something shocking happens that shocks Angelica to her very core and question everything she has done. Can Angelica put her marriage back together and save her family before it’s too late?

Book Cover: To Touch The Stars by Jessica Ruston

Posted on Wednesday, September 8th, 2010 by Leah

Jessica Ruston’s second novel, after her debut Luxury, is due out in hardback on the 9th December 201o and although originally titled Decadence, it will now be called To Touch The Stars. Personally, I preferred Decadence because it’s a beautiful word but To Touch The Stars works for me. I also think the cover is stunning, definitely one of my favourites and the book itself sounds just as fab. Here’s the synopsis:

Renowned for style, glamour and sophistication, Cavalley’s creates the most luxurious millinery in the world. Talented and beautiful, Violet Cavalley has poured her heart and soul into building her multi-million-pound business and raising her three adored children. But behind the Cavalley family’s gilded façade lies a streak of darkness. Darkness that now threatens to destroy them all…
