Book Cover: Fairytale Ending by Gigi Levangie

Posted on Wednesday, September 15th, 2010 by Leah

Gigi Levangie’s latest book Fairytale Ending (published in the US under the title of Queen Takes King) is due for release on 25th November 2010 and the cover (and synopsis) is finally available! I think the cover is really beautiful and I quite like the sound of the book! Here’s the synopsis:

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful woman called Cynthia, queen of glittering Manhattan, who had everything she could ever want. Including a handsome king, otherwise known as her husband, sexy Jack Powers, wealthiest man in New York, and apparently devoted to wife and family.

But wait a minute, isn’t that a wicked witch in the distance? Cynthia’s just discovered her husband’s playing away with beautiful TV anchor Lara Sizemore, who’s head over heels in love with Jack. Now she has to decide whether her fairytale is worth trying to save…

Will they all live happily ever after - or can only one person have a true Fairytale Ending?

    Chick Flick Tuesday: Valentine’s Day

Posted on Tuesday, September 14th, 2010 by Chloe

Chick Flick Tuesday highlights the best chick flicks in the movie world as well as bringing you news on upcoming chick flick releases as well as letting you all know about which chick lit books are being made into chick flick movies!

Sometimes my DVD rental service sends me things which aren’t on my list which can be a pain if they send me something off the wall but I was actually pretty pleased when I received Valentine’s Day from them. I’m not usually too keen on huge cast movies because there usually seems to be too much going on, but when I put it on, I found myself really enjoying it and loving the huge names within the film as well. Expect to see Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Garner, Taylor Lautner (for all you Team Jacob fans!), Patrick Dempsey and more, so it really is a bit of a Hollywood ‘who’s who’ at the moment. The film follows one Valentine’s Day for all the characters of the movie, shows how their lives all intertwine without knowing it, and the ups and downs of love for them all. It’s a very sweet movie, and a great one to watch with the one you love or your best friends. It’s been slated a lot by critics, but if you can just sit and enjoy it for what it is; a sweet, romantic and funny movie, then you should enjoy it too!

“More than a dozen Angelenos navigate Valentine’s Day from early morning until midnight. Three couples awake together, but each relationship will sputter; are any worth saving? A grade-school boy wants flowers for his first true love; two high school seniors plan first-time sex at noon; a TV sports reporter gets the assignment to find romance in LA; a star quarterback contemplates his future; two strangers meet on a plane; grandparents, together for years, face a crisis; and, an “I Hate Valentine’s Day” dinner beckons the lonely and the lied to. Can Cupid finish his work by midnight?”

    Author Interview: Janet Skeslien Charles

Posted on Tuesday, September 14th, 2010 by Leah

Back in July I got the chance to read Moonlight In Odessa by Janet Skeslien Charles, the novel that won the Melissa Nathan Award for Comedy Romance this year, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. We also got to interview Janet, about the book, about Odessa and about winning such a prestigious Chick Lit award! Enjoy the interview, and do enter our giveaway to win a copy of Moonlight In Odessa!

    1. Tell us about your debut novel ‘Moonlight In Odessa’ in your own words.

Moonlight in Odessa is the story of Daria, a woman who wants more. She wants a great husband, an interesting job, good friends, and a family some day. A whip-smart engineer, Daria spends her days under-employed as a secretary (a job she was lucky to get in a tough economy), she spends her evenings interpreting at a matchmaking agency that pairs lonely American men and desperate Ukrainian women. She spends her nights wondering if there is something better out there. When an American client offers her a one-way ticket out of poverty, Daria jumps at the chance to leave. But is the grass always greener on the other side of the world?

    2. Are you working on a second book at all, can you tell us anything about it if so?

I’m working on another novel set in Odessa. We’ll definitely see Daria and Boba again.

Giveaway: Win a copy of Moonlight In Odessa by Janet Skeslien Charles

Posted on Tuesday, September 14th, 2010 by Leah

Thanks to the lovely Janet Skeslien Charles, we have a copy of her debut novel Moonlight In Odessa to giveaway to one lucky reader. All you need to do to enter is to fill in the Google form below! The giveaway is open Worldwide and will close on 19th September. Only one entry per household (full Terms & Conditions here.) Good luck!

A tragic-comic look at the flourishing market for e-mail order brides, Monlight in Odessa is a novel about the choices and sacrifices that people make in pursuit of love and stability, and the lengths that we will go to to help - and hinder - each other in search of a happy ending. Odessa , Ukraine is the humour capital of the former Soviet Union, but with prices rising and employment prospects falling, there is little for Odessans to laugh about. After months of searching, Daria, twenty-five and armed with an engineering degree and perfect English, is offered a plum job as a secretary at a foreign company. But there’s a stone in every plum, and in this case, it’s her new boss Mr. Harmon, who makes it clear that sleeping with him should be the first item on her to-do list. Loath to give up her newfound perks (the taste of real coffee, a new apartment and a salary she and her grandmother can actually live on), Daria manages to evade Harmon’s advances by recruiting her neighbour, the slippery Olga, to be his mistress - a plan that ends up working only too well…And so Daria finds herself moonlighting as an interpreter at Soviet Unions , a dating agency specializing in finding gorgeous Odessan brides for lonely Americans. Daria - so adept at spotting the cracks in the relationships she facilitates - soon discovers that she is not immune to the temptations of the American dream herself. An email correspondence with an apparently shy and sensitive American teacher who offers her a new life in San Francisco, leaves her facing a choice between her beloved city - not to mention the attentions of Vlad, a worryingly attractive mafia gangster - and her long-dreamt-of escape to the land of the free.

    This giveaway is now closed.

Book Review: A Weekend With Mr Darcy by Victoria Connelly

Posted on Monday, September 13th, 2010 by Leah

Katherine Roberts is officially off men and the only men she’s even willing to give head-space to is the fictional ones she reads about in her much-loved Jane Austen books as well as the regency romances of Lorna Warwick, with whom she has also struck up a friendship with and is hoping to meet at a Jane Austen conference.

Despite her name, Robyn Love isn’t really feeling the love for boyfriend Jace any more and when she happens across the chance to head to a Jane Austen conference she jumps at the chance to clear her head of her romantic entanglement, until Jace decides to go with her.

As Katherine and Robyn head off to the Jane Austen conference, Katherine is looking forward to finally meeting Lorna Warwick after so much letter-writing whereas Robyn is just thrilled to be going full stop. But nothing goes according to plan and despite Katherine being off men and Robyn having a boyfriend, true love could be in the air for the pair of them.

Book Cover: Priceless by Nicole Richie

Posted on Monday, September 13th, 2010 by Leah

Nicole Richie’s second novel, Priceless, is out on October 28th and the cover has finally been revealed. I love the sound of the book but the cover doesn’t really inspire me, generally because I remember seeing a similar picture which features Nicole herself and to put yourself (or someone else in a similar pose to yourself) the fiction part kind of goes out the window, don’t you think? Here’s the synopsis:

A wonderfully entertaining riches-to-rags story with the glitz of a celebrity mag exposé, mixed with an old-fashioned tale of comeuppance and self discovery. Meet Charlotte Williams… Rich, gorgeous, blonde and a talented singer, she has everything going for her. Spoiled and indulged, her life has always revolved around fashion, gossip, partying and men. When Charlotte’s father – her only family since her mother’s tragic death years ago – is arrested on fraud charges, her glittering world shatters around her. Alone and penniless, she must make her own way for the very first time. Harassed by paparazzi and the outraged victims of her father’s crimes, Charlotte flees to New Orleans to escape the scandal. But what happens when a Park Avenue Princess is forced to fend for herself? How will she adapt to the Big Easy’s bohemian lifestyle? And in the face of anonymous death threats, can she keep herself out of danger? From the stylish avenues of Manhattan and dark clubs of the French Quarter to the bright lights of Los Angeles, Nicole Richie’s scintillating tale shows that the very life you run from is the one that won’t let you hide.

Single in the City by Michele Gorman

Hannah Cummings has moved from the US to London on a bit of a whim and is looking forward to life in a brand new country. Hannah is soon regretting her rash move when she finds herself jobless, friendless and unable to understand any of the British people she meets. However eventually everything falls into place for Hannah: she gets herself a job at a party planners, makes a fantastic new best friend and even ends up falling for a man. There’s one problem, though, he’s married, so Hannah still finds herself searching for Mr Right. But is there such a thing? I was really looking forward to reading Michele Gorman’s debut novel Single In The City but it just lacked that magical spark as far as I was concerned. Instead of focusing on Hannah’s move to London, the book mainly revolved around Hannah’s many failed relationships as she jumped from man to man. The footnotes at the bottom of some pages added insult to injury as they explained Americanisms to us Brits despite the fact we already know what the NFL is and what dust bunnies are. Overall I thought the book was just really poor. The footnotes made me feel as if I’m stupid, the plot was too man-heavy and I just didn’t like Hannah. (Leah)

    Homecoming by Cathy Kelly

Cathy Kelly’s previous 2 novels haven’t overly inspired me if I am honest, but luckily, Homecoming is a return to Kelly’s best and is certainly a great read. It tells the story of 4 women; Rae, Eleanor, Connie and Megan, all of whom are struggling with life in different circumstances, but all come together to help one another in times of need, and in the spirit of the community. I really loved the setting of a small Irish town, it adds a sense of intimacy and allows for the reader to get really involved in the lives of these characters completely, which makes a real change from Kelly’s previous 2 novels. It covers a couple of big issues, and these are very well handled in the book, very emotional but true to life and I enjoyed this part of the book very much. It kept me reading until the end, I wanted everything to work out for these 4 women, and the length of the story was just right. I really enjoyed this book and it makes me want to look out for more of Cathy Kelly’s books in future… a return to form! (Chloe)

American Saturdays Book News: Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks

Posted on Saturday, September 11th, 2010 by Danielle

Out this week is Nicholas Sparks new novel Safe Haven. Chick Lit fans here in the US flock to Sparks’ writing and I myself am quite a fan of the movies his books have inspired as well. Truly, what could be wrong with an incredibly romantic and young male writer of Chick Lit? This is definitely a book I’m excited to read, with all of the elements I love like romance, mystery, and new destinations. It’s sure to be another of his many record breaking bestsellers. Take a look at the synopsis:

When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children; and another with her plainspoken single neighbor, Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community and becoming increasingly attached to Alex and his family.

But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her . . . a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport. With Jo’s empathic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards . . . and that in the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven.
