Book News: A Storm in A Teacup by Lucy Cavendish

Posted on Thursday, December 10th, 2009 by Leah

lucy cavendish a storm in a teacupThe third installment of Lucy Cavendish‘s Samantha Smythe series, A Storm In A Teacup, is due out in April 2010 and it sounds like an amusing read. I haven’t read the previous two so will have to see if I can pick them up!:

Samantha Smythe is time poor. With six mouths to feed she doesn’t even have time for a bath and, in a bid for some undemanding company, has started to talk to the flowers in the garden.

She’s sure things will get better with some holiday sea air. It will be perfect – rock-pooling and chips on the beach. But things are never that simple and soon eldest son Edward is experimenting with Bacardi Breezers and girls in G-strings, middle son Bennie doesn’t want to wear any clothes and why is Samantha’s husband never there when she needs him? Does Samantha have more to worry about than sand in the bed and yummy mummies on the beach or is it all just a storm in a teacup?

    Author Interview: Charlotte Ward

Posted on Wednesday, December 9th, 2009 by Leah

charlotte wardCharlotte Ward is the author of two non-fiction titles, the latest being It’s Not Me, It’s You. After offering us her latest book to review for the site we asked if she’d like to do an author interview and she said yes. Here it is! Look out for my review of It’s Not Me, It’s You tomorrow!

Tell us about your latest book, It’s Not Me, It’s You.

It’s Not Me, It’s You is a guide to getting over a break-up packed full of funny and excruciating real life stories from girls who’ve already been through it. I was inspired to write it because the break-up guides I’ve come across often seem to skim the surface suggesting you to do things like ‘get a radical new haircut’ which is not good advice! When you’ve had your heart broken and your confidence shattered doing something dramatic to your hair has the potential to make you feel a hundred times worse. If you think you’ll look as good as Gwyneth Paltrow in Sliding Doors then you are probably deluded. Sod’s law dictates that instead you’ll end up hating it and feeling even more depressed.

Rather than dish out useless advice I’ve tried to tell the truth about what break-ups are really like and illustrate my points with stories from myself and friends. When you’re going through a break-up you can often feel alone and isolated but hopefully with this book you’ll start to see that everyone has been heartbroken at some stage and you can get over it. So instead of crying over a broken relationship have a good laugh at all the stupid things we’ve done instead.

The book is also quite nostalgic, dealing with all the highs and lows of dating and single life so in that respect I’d hope that any girl in her 20s and 30s could read it and enjoy reminiscing and relating.

Cover Wars: Girl Friday by Jane Green

Posted on Wednesday, December 9th, 2009 by Leah

jane green girl fridayjanegreengirlfridayThe paperback vesion of Jane Green’s latest novel Girl Friday has had a re-design prior to its release on 29th April 2010. I prefer the paperback cover (right) to the hardback cover (left), which do you prefer? Here’s the synopsis for those bothered about what’s inside the book rather than on the cover:

When Kit and Adam separated after almost fifteen years of marriage, Kit felt like she had lost her lover, her best friend and her identity all in one fell swoop. But now, a year on from the divorce, Kit has found herself again and she loves her life in the idyllic Connecticut town of Highfield.

She has the perfect job – working for Robert McClore, the famous novelist – two wonderful children, a good relationship with her ex-husband and time to enjoy yoga with her friends. Then Tracy, Kit’s yoga instructor and close friend, introduces her to Steve – attentive, charming, the perfect gentleman – and, for the first time in years, Kit thinks she may have found the right one. But is Steve really as perfect as he seems?

And why does it bother Kit when Tracy starts dating Kit’s reclusive boss, Robert? What no one knows is that Tracy is hiding a secret – one that threatens to ruin her new-found happiness with Robert and her friendship with Kit. And now Tracy must decide whether to keep her past hidden from them both for ever or whether she should reveal the truth before it’s too late…

Book Cover: The Wish by Sasha Blake

Posted on Tuesday, December 8th, 2009 by Leah

sasha blake the wishSasha Blake’s (the pseudonym of Anna Maxted) second novel The Wish is due for release on 5th August 2010 and the book cover has finally been released. I rather love the brown cover, it’s simplistic and I really love the brown as it makes a change from pink covers.

There’s no official synopsis but here is what Sasha said when we spoke to her a few months ago:

The Wish – a big juicy escapist read set in Las Vegas, about powerful women with secrets they need to keep.

Book Review: Eastern Promise by Jessica Fox

Posted on Monday, December 7th, 2009 by Chloe

Eastern Promises - Jessica FoxPriya Gupta is a bit cynical when it comes to matters relating to love and fate. So when at her best friends hen night Priya is told she has to see a clairvoyant, she’s not happy and is determined not to believe anything that the pyschic tells her. Strangely though, Priya comes away with just one message: “In matters of love, mother knows best”. Priya doesn’t believe a word, and carries on with her life.

Priya’s sister Neesh is getting married and is making a big song and dance about it too. The Gupta family are about to return to India for the wedding of the century, and Priya is going to keep working throughout. At the Ashram, Priya meets Noah and finds herself attracted to him. Book Cover: House Rules by Jodi Picoult

Posted on Monday, December 7th, 2009 by Leah

jodi picoult house rulesI love Jodi Picoult’s books and her latest, House Rules, which is due out on 27th April 2010 sounds as if it’s going to be another fantastic read. I love the simplistic nature of the cover and can’t wait until the book is out. Here’s the synopsis:

Jacob Hunt is a teenager: brilliant at maths, wicked sense of humour, extraordinarily organised, hopeless at reading social cues. And Jacob has Asperger’s. He is locked in his own world – aware of the world outside, and wanting to make a connection. Jacob tries to be like everyone else, but doesn’t know how.

When his tutor is found dead, all the hallmark behaviours of Jacob’s syndrome – not looking someone in the eye, odd movements, inappropriate actions – start looking a lot like guilt to the police. And Jacob’s mother must ask herself the hardest question in the world: is her child capable of murder?
