Author of the Week: Louise Bagshawe

Posted on Thursday, September 24th, 2009 by Chloe

Louise_BagshaweWhen I was at University, I began to start to read “chick-lit” properly, and one of my first ever chick lit books was Monday’s Child by Louise Bagshawe. I absolutely loved it and set about getting hold of Louise’s other books and since then I’ve been a big fan of her books. Her earlier stuff is definitely much better than her later stuff so its worth checking that out if you haven’t read any of Louise’swork before. Her latest novel Passion is a bit different to her other 11 novels, but I can’t wait to getting around to reading it. As well as being a best selling author, Louise is also a Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Corby and East Northamptonshire, so she keeps pretty busy! Her sister, Tilly Bagshawe, is also a bestselling writer and just as good as her older sister too. Here’s a bit more about Louise:

“Louise attended local Catholic schools near her family home in London, before going to Oxford University in 1989. After graduating with a degree in Anglo Saxon and Norse, Louise worked as press officer with EMI records and then as a marketing official with Sony Music.

On her 22nd birthday, Louise’s passion for writing was realised with a major publishing deal. To date, Louise has written twelve novels including a string of bestsellers. She has sold over two million books worldwide.”

Book News: The Twenty Year Itch by Linda Kelsey

Posted on Thursday, September 24th, 2009 by Chloe

The Twenty Year Itch - Linda KelseyAuthor Linda Kelsey is back next February with her third book, The Twenty Year Itch. It’s release date is 7th January 2010 in hardback and 18th February in paperback, and sounds like a great idea. Here’s the synopsis:

“Can love survive long-term in the twenty-first century? Julie is beginning to doubt it. When her husband of twenty years announces that he is chucking his job to embark on an adult gap year leaving his salary and Julie behind, she puts her marriage under the microscope.

Turning to her friends for comfort and advice, Julie finds that their relationships are falling apart too. Surely they can’t all be innocent victims? Or all bad wives? Is there no such thing as an enduring marriage? Does that twenty-year itch just have to be scratched?

While this emotional maelstrom rages around her, meeting someone new is the last thing on Julie’s mind. Until a chance encounter propels her onto a sexual collision course with a man who spells danger . . .”

Book Review: e² by Matt Beaumont

Posted on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 by Leah

matt beaumont e2e² is the sequel to Matt Beaumont’s first novel e. which was hugely successful but which I haven’t read.

It’s told entirely in the format of emails, text messages, instant messages and blog posts and answers some of lifes important questions: Can threatening to jump out of a window really make you a YouTube star and lead to an appearance on BB? Can you really sell off office furniture to pay off your debts?

And, the most important of all, how on Earth do you type the accents above letters?

    CLR.com Awards 2009: The Categories

Posted on Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 by Leah

booksA few months ago we mentioned the inaugural Chick Lit Reviews’ Awards 2009. (Inspired name, huh?) Here are all of the categories we’ll be honouring. Look out for the full list of nominee’s sometime in late November/early December. In the mean time we’ll be presenting some of those that may make the shortlist. Since Chloe and I have read different books this year, I was wondering if maybe we should do separate nominee’s and winners. What do you guys think?

Best & Worst Book of the Year - Best & Worst Sequel of the Year - Book With Most LOL Moments - Tear-Jerker of the Year- The Inaugural “stick to the day-job -you’re rubbish at writing” Award (sponsored by Penny Smith)* - Best Debut Novel 2009 - Most Anticipated Book of the Year: Good and Bad - Book That Blew Our Socks Off (We Didn’t Expect To Love It But We Did) - Book Cover of the Year - Best Lead Character - Sexiest Male Character - Favourite Author of 2009

*We mean no offense to Penny Smith but she should have stuck to her day job.

Book News: The Secrets We Keep by Louise Candlish

Posted on Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 by Chloe

I have found Louise Candlish’s books a bit hit and miss if I’m honest, as the main twist in the story has often been revealed hence it takes the wind out of the sails of it a bit! I have Louise’s latest book “Before We Say Goodbye” to read, but Amazon already has news of her next book. The Secrets We Keep is due out on 24th June 2010, and sounds like another interesting read:

“When Ginny and Adam Trustlove arrive for a holiday in Italy they are torn apart by personal tragedy. A boathouse on peaceful Lake Orta is exactly the place to start piecing together their lives. A day later, the silence is broken by the arrival at the main house of the Sale family: wealthy, successful Martin and Bea and their privileged, confident offspring. It doesn’t take long for Ginny and Adam to be drawn in, especially when the teenage Pippi introduces a new friend into the mix. For there is something about Zach that seems to loosen old secrets ? and create shocking new ones … “

Book News: The Rise & Fall of the Wonder Girls by Sarah May

Posted on Monday, September 21st, 2009 by Leah

Sarah May’s books are billed as black-hearted soap operas and her latest, The Rise & Fall of the Wonder Girl’s, sounds as if it’ll follow the same track as her previous two. It’s due for release on November 29th and here is the synopsis:

Four teenage girls - Grace, Vicky, Ruth and Saskia - all at the same school; all with the same secret. October. Burwood. The corridors of Burwood Girls School are once more full of oestrogen; Platform number one at Burwood Station is packed with commuters waiting for delayed trains to London; the gym at Oasis Leisure centre is full of fading tans while leaves fall and pile up on lawns ripe for raking.

Just like any other October. Until life gets turned inside out in this affluent South-eastern town when not one but four teenage girls fall pregnant. As the media descends on Burwood with unprecedented ferocity, headlines such as: WHO ARE THE BABIES’ FATHERS? DO ALL FOUR BABIES SHARE THE SAME FATHER? GIRLS REVEAL PREGNANCIES WEREN’T ACCIDENTAL! ARE THE BURWOOD GIRLS PART OF A TEENAGE PREGNANCY CULT? !at first seem to corrupt this small, leafy, affluent community until we realise that the corruption was there all along, bubbling just beneath the surface.

Before things get better, they’re going to get much, much worse. But then, at the end of the day, the last thing anyone in Burwood wants is life to return to normal.
