Author of the Week: Melissa Hill

Posted on Thursday, May 21st, 2009 by Chloe

One of my favourite authors has to be Melissa Hill. She always manages to write a story that keeps me guessing right up until the end, and the twists and turns throughout her book are fantastic. I have read several of her books now and loved them all. Here’s a little bit about Melissa:

“Melissa Hill lives in South Dublin with her husband and dog.

A number one bestseller in her native Ireland, she is the author of 8 best-selling novels. All have been translated into many different languages including French, German, Finnish, Latvian, Spanish, Norwegian, Portuguese Brazilian, Thai and Hungarian.

Hailed ‘the queen of the big plot twist’, her books combine all the warmth and humour of contemporary women’s fiction with plots that keep readers guessing from page to page in a style usually only seen in crime fiction.”

Book News: The Control Freak Chronicles by Sarah Tucker

Posted on Wednesday, May 20th, 2009 by Leah

Sarah Tucker’s seventh novel, The Control Freak Chronicles, is released on June 18th and the synopsis reads:

At forty-four, Helena Treadwell thought she had everything sorted. After divorcing her control freak ex, Leonard Wallis, she and her nine-year-old son, Freddie, relocated to her home town of Castleford. She’s made a happy home for them and has a successful career as a radio presenter. Finally she feels she’s clawing back the control and confidence she lost to Leonard. But life is never simple for long …Helena unexpectedly loses her job and Leonard announces that not only does he want Freddie to attend a private boarding school, he’s also decided to move to Castleford to set up home with ‘the other woman’. Suddenly Helena’s losing control again, as her past comes back to unravel her future.

I haven’t read any of Sarah’s novels but I’ll be sure to pick one up if I see one.

Book News: Curse of the Spellmans by Lisa Lutz

Posted on Wednesday, May 20th, 2009 by Chloe

Curse of the Spellmans - Lisa LutzLisa Lutz came to attention last year with her debut novel The Spellman Files which I have on my bookshelf to read at the moment. She is back this year with the follow-up to that book called Curse of the Spellmans and it looks to be another great book to add to our summer reads list. Here’s the synopsis:

“When private investigator Izzy Spellman is arrested for the fourth time in three months, she writes it off as an occupational hazard. She’s been keeping surveillance on her new next-door neighbour (suspect’s name: John Brown), convinced he’s up to no good - even if Spellman Investigations management (Izzy’s parents) disagree. When the displeased management refuse to bail her out, it’s Morty, Izzy’s octogenarian lawyer, who comes to her rescue. But before he can build a defence, he has to know the facts. Over weak coffee and pastrami sandwiches, Izzy unveils the whole truth and nothing but the truth - as only she, a licensed 30-year-old professional, can. ”

It looks like a funny book, and is published on 3rd August 2009 so look out for it in the shops then!

Book News: The Overnight Socialite by Bridie Clark

Posted on Tuesday, May 19th, 2009 by Leah

Another cover I’ve come across today is the cover for Bridie Clark’s second novel The Overnight Socialite. The synopsis reads:

Set in contemporary Manhattan, The Overnight Socialite is the story of a shy, young Midwesterner named Lucy Ellis who is transformed into a sophisticated socialite by Wyatt Hayes, a dashing but arrogant man-about-town who is convinced he can turn anyone even the most awkward wallflower into this year’s “it” girl. The Overnight Socialite tells a timeless story of transformation and unlikely love set against a contemporary backdrop.

I really like the sound of the book. It’s out on December 16th.

Book News: That Loving Feeling by Carole Matthews

Posted on Tuesday, May 19th, 2009 by Leah

Carole Matthew’s latest novel, That Loving Feeling is released on the 17th September and the shiny cover has been revealed. I absolutely love this cover and can’t wait for the book. The synopsis reads

Juliet Joyce has been happily married for twenty-five years. But with two grown-up children who treat the house like a hotel, a seventy-year-old mother who’s just moved in and a father who’s announced he’s gay it’s hardly surprising that her relationship with her husband Rick is beginning to suffer.

Juliet’s resigned to the fact that the only romance she’s going to get is from the pages of her library books, so nothing prepares her for the unexpected return of Steven Aubrey. Last seen twenty-six years ago, when he jilted Juliet on their wedding day, he ignites a passion in her that she thought was long gone. But will Steven sweep her off her feet or can Rick remind her of the loving feeling that they’ve lost? There’s only one way to find out..

Book Review: The Model Wife by Julia Llewellyn

Posted on Tuesday, May 19th, 2009 by Chloe

themodelwifejuliallewellynPoppy Norton is a bit of a cliché, even she admits it. She was unlucky in love until she met News Presenter, father of 3 Luke Norton. The two begin a relationship on the sly, and accidentally Poppy falls pregnant.

Luke decides to leave his wife Hannah to set up home with Poppy but soon finds out life with a young model and their newborn daughter doesn’t quite match up to his twenty-year marriage. Things are not rosy in the Norton garden, but are they going to get better or worse?

Book News: Everyone is Beautiful by Katherine Center

Posted on Tuesday, May 19th, 2009 by Chloe

American author Katherine Center is back with her second novel, Everyone is Beautiful, and it is to be released on 11th June and looks to be a great read. I thoroughly enjoyed Katherine’s debut novel The Bright Side of Disaster about a new mum and her baby being abandoned by the man in their life, and this one looks to continue the theme of finding yourself in the face of unexpected shock. Here’s the synopsis:

“Piling everything she owns into her car, Lanie leaves family and friends behind - all so her husband can realise his dreams of becoming a professional musician. But, somewhere in the eye of her personal hurricane, it hits Lanie that she once had dreams too. If only she could remember what they were. Fifteen years, three babies, and more pounds than she’s willing to count after she said ‘I do’, Lanie longs desperately to feel like her old self again. It’s time to fish her va-va-voom out of the nappy bin and find the woman she was before motherhood capsized her existence - harder said than done, when by finding herself she seems to be losing everything else in the process.”

Published by Piatkus, it’s out next month so look out for it in the shops then!
