    Author Interview: Jessica Brody

Posted on Saturday, May 23rd, 2009 by Leah

jessbrodyIf you haven’t heard of Jessica Brody my advice to you is to go and buy her debut novel The Fidelity Files. It is a brilliant novel and the sequel is out in October. Jessica very kindly agreed to do an interview with us and here are her answers!

    1. Describe your latest novel in a sentence.

The Fidelity Files is the story of a young woman who works as an undercover “fidelity inspector” or “honey trap,” hired by suspicious wives and girlfriends to test the faithfulness of the men in their lives.

Book News: The Runaway Wife by Susy McPhee

Posted on Friday, May 22nd, 2009 by Leah

Susy McPhee’s second novel, The Runaway Wife, is due out on the 17th of September and the synopsis reads:

Marion Bishop’s life has fallen apart. Her daughter Hope was killed in a hit-and-run accident six months ago, and now Sam, her beloved husband, has walked out. Left alone with her grief, Marion has begun to contemplate the unthinkable.

However, even her suicide plans go awry. Firstly, she’s all out of pills, and then she’s mugged when she goes out to get more. In fact, it’s the mugging that wakes her up to the fact that she’s perhaps not quite so ready to die as she’d thought: an awkward realisation when you have a knife at your throat.

When her mugger’s girlfriend intervenes in the attack, an unlikely friendship blossoms between the two women and Marion begins to contemplate a future. And what of Sam? He may have given up on their marriage but he hasn’t given up on Marion entirely.

It sounds a really interesting read. I’ll post the cover as soon as it’s made public.

Book News: Love Letters by Katie Fforde

Posted on Friday, May 22nd, 2009 by Leah

loveletterskatieffordeKatie Fforde’s 15th - yes, 15th - novel, Love Letters, is due out next month on June 4th and the synopsis reads:

With the bookshop where she works about to close, Laura Horsley, in a moment of uncharacteristic recklessness, finds herself agreeing to help organize a literary festival deep in the heart of the English countryside. But her initial excitement is rapidly followed by a mounting sense of panic when reality sinks in and she realizes just how much work is involved - especially when an innocent mistake leads the festival committee to mistakenly believe that Laura is a personal friend of the author at the top of their wish-list.

Laura might have been secretly infatuated with the infamous Dermot Flynn ever since she studied him at university, but traveling to Ireland to persuade the notorious recluse to come out of hiding is another matter. Determined to rise to the challenge she sets off to meet her literary hero. But all too soon she’s confronted with more than she bargained for - Dermot the man is maddening, temperamental and up to his ears in a nasty case of writer’s block. But he’s also infuriatingly attractive - and, apparently, out to add Laura to his list of conquests…

I love the sound of it and I love Katie Fforde’s books. I have almost all of her novels bar Living Dangerously and Flora’s Lot and have Wild Designs and Wedding Season to-read. Once I get the chance I’ll re-read Katie’s books and review them. Check back soon for an interview with Katie.

Book News: Authors in the News

Posted on Thursday, May 21st, 2009 by Leah

    * Hodder has signed chick-lit author Belinda Jones in a move away from her previous publisher, Random House, in a four-book deal for an undisclosed sum. The first book in the deal is currently untitled, but will be set in Argentina, Cuba and Spain and published in paperback in April 2010. The further three books will be published each subsequent year also in April, keeping Jones positioned for the summer slot. Hodder plans to update the look of Jones’ books in the same way that it has previously repackaged Melissa Hill and Alexandra Potter.

    * HarperFiction’s publishing director Lynne Drew has signed Headline’s outgoing editorial director Harriet Evans in a three-book deal. The deal, for “a good six-figure sum”, was agreed with Jonathan Lloyd at Curtis Brown. Evans left Headline this week to work full-time on the novels. Her first, Going Home, was published in 2005. The first book in the deal, Evans’ fourth, is entitled I Remember You and will be published in hardback this November. It is set in Wiltshire and Rome, and described as “‘Room with a View’ meets ‘Roman Holiday’”.

    * Orion has signed a further two novels by Emily Giffin in a “substantial” deal for an undisclosed sum. The first, entitled The Heart of the Matter, will be published in July 2010. The second as-yet-untitled novel has not yet been scheduled.

Liza Palmer, author of Conversations With A Fat Girl and Seeing Me Naked returns on October 29th with her new novel, A Field Guide To Burying Your Parents. The synopsis reads:

There are times when we’d all like to disown our family. But when the going got tough, Grace did it for real, leaving her family and even her lover behind.

With a lovely house, a new boyfriend and her family safely tucked in the past, everything seems perfect. Until Grace discovers that her estranged father is dying. It sounds a really great read so I’ll definitely be looking out for it.
