Book News: Want To Know A Secret? by Sue Moorcroft

Posted on Wednesday, July 21st, 2010 by Leah

Sue Moorcroft’s third book with Choc Lit is due to be released on November 1st 2010 and will be called Want To Know A Secret?. I like the simplicity of the cover and it definitely sounds like a great read. I have Sue’s previous two Choc Lit releases to read, so here’s hoping I can get to them soon! Here’s the synopsis:

Money, love and family. Which matters most? When Diane Jenner’s husband is hurt in a helicopter crash, she discovers a secret that changes her life. And it’s all about money, the kind of money the Jenners have never had. James North has money, and he knows it doesn’t buy happiness. He’s been a rock for his wayward wife and troubled daughter - but that doesn’t stop him wanting Diane. James and Diane have something in common: they always put family first. Which means that what happens in the back of James’s Mercedes is a really, really bad idea. Or is it?

    Chick Flick Tuesday: Clueless

Posted on Tuesday, July 20th, 2010 by Leah

Chick Flick Tuesday highlights the best chick flicks in the movie world as well as bringing you news on upcoming chick flick releases as well as letting you all know about which chick lit books are being made into chick flick movies!

One of my favourite ever films is Clueless. It was released in 1995 and became a sleeper hit (something that gains unexpected recognition). I watched it years ago and I absolutely loved it. It’s a perfect teen movie and has aged surprisingly well. Cher’s “whatever” catchphrase is legendary and all of the actresses did a fantastic job. Alicia Silverstone was stunning as Cher and it surprises me even now to see just how young Brittany Murphy looked back then! It is a must-watch for any chick flick fan and if you haven’t seen it, you ought to go and buy it on Amazon for only £2.99, which would be money VERY well spent!

Cher Horowitz and her friend Dionne, two of the most popular sophomores in school, play matchmakers for two teachers. Inspired by their success, Cher takes under her wing Tai, a “clueless” transfer student. While trying to make an advantageous match for Tai, Cher attempts to find a boyfriend of her own. Several misfires take place, due to poor communication, before she finds the Baldwin of her dreams. (Taken from IMDB.com)

    Author Interview: Alison Bond

Posted on Tuesday, July 20th, 2010 by Chloe

I recently read and loved Alison Bond’s new book A Reluctant Cinderella, and was delighted when Alison was kind enough to answer some of my questions about her and her books. If you haven’t read A Reluctant Cinderella yet, I would definitely recommend that you do because it’s a brilliant book, and don’t let the cover fool you because it certainly isn’t what you’d expect from that. Without further ado, here is my interview with the lovely Alison Bond.

Q1. Tell us about your book ‘A Reluctant Cinderella’.

It’s been a huge stretch between books, almost four years, and while I’d like to say I’ve been busy having children and moving to the Cotswolds (both of which happen to be true) the more honest reason is that my first attempt at a third novel was abysmal. I tried my hand at romantic comedy that the likes of Sophie Kinsella and Jenny Colgan do so well and it didn’t quite work out. We spent a lot of time (too much time maybe) trying to make it better but in the end I threw up my hands and started all over again with A Reluctant Cinderella. Obviously it was all terribly frustrating but looking back it was a very valuable lesson in writing what you truly want to write. A Reluctant Cinderella is the kind of glamorous, twisting tale I feel much happier with. Samantha Sharp is a powerful woman who encounters scandal at work, in her family life and in her love life. It’s about how she deals with adversity by facing up to her past.

Q2. What sort of research did you have to do to be able to write this book?

Samantha Sharp is forced out of her high-powered job when evidence suggests that she’s been involved with some dodgy dealings. She relocates to Krakow in Poland and a lot of the book is set there. Krakow is one of my favourite cities so it wasn’t so much a case of research as writing about what I know. We lived in Krakow for a while and I had such an affinity with the place that I think I must have been a Polish princess in a previous life. Hopefully I managed to capture some of its mysterious charm in this book. For everything else I used my imagination.

Cover Wars: Mini Shopaholic - UK vs. US!

Posted on Tuesday, July 20th, 2010 by Chloe

A lot of you left comments telling us you didn’t like the UK version of Sophie Kinsella’s new book Mini Shopaholic, due out in September, because it doesn’t match the earlier books in the series and the colours aren’t great. Sophie’s American publishers just released the US version of the book cover, and I am not overly keen on that either, it’s quite plain! Which do you prefer and why?

Book Review: Seven Year Switch by Claire Cook

Posted on Monday, July 19th, 2010 by Danielle

Just when Jill Murray’s finally figured out how to manage on her own, her ex-husband proves that he can’t even run away reliably. After seven long years missing in action, he’s back—crashing into the man-free existence Jill and her ten-year-old daughter have built so carefully. And what’s a good mother to do? To a child, even a deadbeat dad is better than no dad at all.

Jill’s life just hasn’t turned out quite the way she planned. By now, she’d hoped to be jetting around the world as a high-end cultural coach. Instead, she’s answering phones for a local travel agency and teaching cooking classes at the community center.

Enter free-spirited entrepreneur Billy, who hires Jill as a consultant for an upcoming business trip. Is their relationship veering off in a new direction? And what about her ex? Jill couldn’t possibly still have feelings for him . . . could she? Suddenly, her no-boys-allowed life is anything but.

They say that every seven years you become a completely new person, but Jill isn’t sure she’s ready for the big change. It takes a Costa Rican getaway to help her make a choice—not so much between the two men in her life, but between the woman she is and the one she wants to be.

Posted on Monday, July 19th, 2010 by Chloe

Chick lit author Melissa Hill is now going to be writing Crime Thrillers with her husband Kevin, and has just signed a book deal with publishers Simon & Schuster. The first book, ‘Taboo’, which is to be released under the pen-name of Casey Hill is the first in a series. The books are said to be along the lines of Patricia Cornwell’s novels. Don’t worry though, Melissa has told me she’ll still be writing her fabulous chick lit novels too! Her next book, Something From Tiffany’s, is due out in 2011!

Book Cover: Good As Gold by Louise Patten

Posted on Monday, July 19th, 2010 by Leah

I really enjoyed Louise Patten’s debut novel when it was released last year, but I absolutely hated the cover; it was so, so ugly. They re-designed the cover for the paperback release and they’ve continued the trend with her second book Good As Good which is out on September 30th 2010. I’m looking forward to the book after enjoying Louise’s first. Here’s the synopsis:

Edie Quentance is the ugly duckling in a family of charming conformists. For generations, Quentance Bank has managed the wealth of its rich and aristocratic clients, and when Edie is pushed into joining the family bank, she finds the work very dull indeed. She passes the time trying to uncover the truth about her great-grandfather Kit, whose love of the sea she has inherited. Kit Quentance was rumoured to have carried a fortune into the Titanic lifeboat with him - money that has never been found. Edie’s excavations in the family archive unearth some shocking and far more recent secrets. She realises that Quentance Bank is not the paragon of old fashioned probity it pretends to be. As she tries to right her family’s wrong-doings, Edie’s position becomes increasingly dangerous. Her twin brother, her parents, her uncle - she no longer knows whom she can trust.
