Chick Lit Classics: Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella

    April 8th, 2010 by Leah

Chick Lit Classics is a new feature on Chick Lit Reviews where we highlight the books we feel are classics of the chick lit genre. Feel free to discuss our choices in the comments section!

With Becky Bloomwood due to be back in the shops in September, we feel that now is the perfect time to tell you about one of the most classic chick lit reads you may ever come across: Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella (originally titled The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic). It’s one of my all-time favourite novels and I just plain old love Becky Bloomwood and her crazy adventures always have me laughing out loud and I can’t wait to get back into her world! I’m going to be re-reading the entire series for our Sophie Kinsella week in August/September and I’m so looking forward to it! There’s also a film out starring Isla Fisher as Becky although, to be honest, I didn’t think it did the book justice at all so the less said about it the better!

Meet Rebecca Bloomwood. She’s a journalist. She spends her working life telling others how to manage their money. She spends her leisure time …shopping. Retail therapy is the answer to all her problems. She knows she should stop, but she can’t. She tries Cutting Back, she tries Making More Money. But neither seems to work. The stories she concocts become more and more fantastic as she tries to untangle her increasingly dire financial difficulties. Her only comfort is to buy herself something - just a little something …Can Becky ever escape from this dream world, find true love, and regain the use of her Switch card? Confessions of a Shopaholic …the perfect pick me up for when it’s all hanging in the (bank) balance.

I love the entire series and hope Sophie writes another one. Her books never fail to make me giggle.

I have never laughed out loud reading a book the way I do reading the Shopaholic series. I can’t wait for the new one!

And I did not like the film! I think they could have done a much better job with it, the books are too funny to end up as a mediocre movie.

i think I only managed about 20 minutes of the film before falling asleep. Hated what I saw though (Becky working for Luke ?! NOT how it happened grrr) It was actually Shopaholic and Baby that I read first (though not my first Kinsella), not long after my daughter was born and I laughed so much (while nodding along too) I can’t wait for Mini shopoholic!

I LOVE this book but I never understood why they had to change the title when they released it in America. I think Secret Dreamworld of . . . sounds better than Confessions of . . . Just my opinion!

I loved all this series! Although the original book cover is nicer. And I agree with Paula, Secret Dreamworld is a lot better!

I loved this book too!!!! I still remember seeing it on the shelf at barnes and noble and thinking it looked so good. I asked for it for my birthday that year and got it, haha. One of my introductions to chick lit! That series is sooo funny… I really need to read the latest one.. Shopaholic and Baby? I haven’t kept up, but I really should since there’s another one coming out!! Maybe I should re-read the series… hmm.

I love Sophie Kinsella but I have to make the confession that I haven’t read any of the Shopaholic series!! Very embarrassing, I shall have to get hold of the first one!

I don’t agree with others about the film, I loved the film one of my favourite films of all time and love the books they may not match completely but think it’s a great film.

This is one of my first chick lit books, and I still love it. I’ve read the first one twice and I think I might need to again. I agree with most of the others, the film was a letdown.
