Book Review: Vintage by Olivia Darling

Posted on Wednesday, August 19th, 2009 by Chloe

Vintage - Olivia DarlingVintage follows three women who enter the man’s world of wine-making, well champagne making to be exact. Madeleine Arsenault is the daughter of a French champagne-maker, and is left his vineyard when he dies. Madeleine wants to produce a vintage wine of her own, and is determined to prove her critics, who don’t believe a woman can create a great wine, wrong and to rise to the top of her game.

Kelly Elson, a chambermaid in a hotel is also left a vineyard in a will, but unlike Madeleine, she doesn’t want anything to do with it. Under the guidance of trustee Hilarian and and vineyard keeper Guy, she decides maybe there is something to be done in the wine business after all.

Finally, we have Christina Morgan, an American supermodel whose marriage is in tatters, much like her career. Christina only takes on the vineyard as she has nothing else to do, but quickly realises she enjoys the work of making a new bottle of wine, and is determined to make a success of her vineyard.

    Author Interview: Carmen Reid

Posted on Tuesday, August 18th, 2009 by Leah

Carmen ReidCarmen Reid is the author of seven novels, three of which star Annie Valentine, and we have reviewed her latest Annie Valentine adventure How Not To Shop. To find out more about Carmen, see our Author of the Week post! Carmen kindly said she’d do an interview with us and here are her answers:

    1. Tell us about your latest novel, How Not To Shop, in a sentence.

Personal shopper Annie Valentine leaves The Store to seek fame and fortune as a TV presenter, unfortunately this is makeover-on-a-shoestring TV: the budget is zip and they’re paying buttons, nevertheless, Annie is determined to succeed.

    2. What, if anything, are you currently working on?

There will be an Annie Valentine part four next year and I’m just finishing off the third book in my ‘Secrets at St Jude’s’ boarding school series for teen readers.

Mel, Joe, Suze, Karl. They’re family. They’re friends. And they’re about to discover whether or not they can navigate those other F-words – fidelity and forgiveness.

When the midnight calls come in from the hospital, no one is prepared for the appalling truth: Emily is dead at seventeen from a gunshot wound to the head as part of an apparent suicide pact. The gun holds a single unspent bullet that Chris tells police he intended for himself, but a local detective has doubts. And the Hartes and Golds, in a single terrifying moment, must face every parent’s worst fear: do we ever really know our children at all?

jewellmelodybrowneThe Truth About Melody Browne is Lisa Jewell’s seventh novel and is a complete departure from her usual works. Aged 9, Melody lost everything in a house fire - all of her material possessions.

Book News: What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty

Posted on Monday, August 17th, 2009 by Leah

liane moriarty - what alice forgotLiane Moriarty’s third novel, What Alice Forgot, is due for release on 10th June 2010 by Penguin and sounds like a very interesting read - kind of like Sophie Kinsella’s book Remember Me?:

Remember the woman you used to be … Alice is twenty-nine. She is whimsical, optimistic and adores sleep, chocolate, her ramshackle new house and her wonderful husband Nick. What’s more, she’s looking forward to the birth of the ‘Sultana’ – her first baby. But now Alice has slipped and hit her head in her step-aerobics class and everyone’s telling her she’s misplaced the last ten years of her life.

In fact, it would seem that Alice is actually thirty-nine and now she loves schedules, expensive lingerie, caffeine and manicures. She has three children and the honeymoon is well and truly over for her and Nick. In fact, he looks at her like she’s his worst enemy. What’s more, her beloved sister Elisabeth isn’t speaking to her either. And who is this ‘Gina’everyone is so carefully trying not to mention? Alice isn’t sure that she likes life ten years on.

Every photo is another memory she doesn’t have and nothing makes sense. Just how much can happen in a decade? Has she really lost her lovely husband for ever? What Alice Forgot is a novel with a tremendous heart about the enormity of all the things that can happen to a person in ten years. It’s a story about mothers and daughters, sisters and friends, husbands and wives, and of how you should never lose sight of the people that you love.

Book News: What Every Woman Wants by Lucy Dawson

Posted on Friday, August 14th, 2009 by Leah

Lucy Dawson’s third novel What Every Woman Wants was originally due for release in February 2010 but has been delayed by 7 months and will now be released on 2nd September 2010. It sounds like another cracker from Lucy:

Kirsty is happy with her husband, Joe. But they have one issue: Joe really, really wants a baby. He always assumed this was on the cards, but now the time to make a decision has come, Kirsty really isn’t sure she wants the same thing.

But Joe’s relentless pressure leads her to make a catastrophic decision - a moment of madness borne out of isolated frustration. The one moment of temptation that she hopes no one will ever know about goes horribly wrong.

When she stands to lose everything, what will Kirsty do?
