Book News: Sidney Sheldon’s After The Darkness by Tilly Bagshawe

Posted on March 5th, 2010 by Leah

Last year, Tilly Bagshawe took it upon herself to write the sequel to Sidney Sheldon’s Master of the Game with her title Sidney Sheldon’s Mistress of the Game. Tilly is at it again and this time her book will be called Sidney Sheldon’s After The Darkness which will be released on August 5th. Here’s the synopsis:

In 2009 the US stock market goes into a terrifying freefall. The economy is on the brink, and the public want someone to blame, their eyes and their rage directed firmly at Wall Street. Living as though nothing is happening, everything changes when Lenny’s body is found after a tragic sailing “accident”. Industry Interview: Hannah Torjussen, Little Brown

Posted on March 3rd, 2010 by Leah

After the success of our first industry interview with Sherise Hobbs from Headline, we were thrilled to receive the answers to some questions we had sent to the very friendly Hannah Torjussen who works at Little, Brown. We hope you guys enjoy it as much as we did!

    1. Can you tell us, in as little detail or as much detail as you wish, what exactly it is you do within the publishing industry?

The publicity department here at Sphere is incredibly busy on a daily basis. We handle a number of media enquiries, with requests for review copies, interviews and features coming in from the national and regional newspapers, magazines, websites, TV and radio stations. I plan and carry out publicity campaigns for around four new titles a month, and this involves writing press releases, sending out review copies to all the literary editors and key reviewers, and pitching to journalists in order to persuade them to feature or review my titles and authors. I also need to stay in constant contact with my authors and keep them updated on any news of coverage, as well as manage their interview and events schedules, which can involve promotional book signings and festival appearances across the country.

    2. What was your road to working in publicity?

I have always loved books and after studying English at university I was keen to explore a career in publishing. I sent out hundreds of letters to different publishing companies and managed to get an interview with Darton, Longman and Todd, a small independent theological publishing house in London. My role was publicity assistant, and while publicising academic theology books might sound quite unexciting and dull, I had a fantastic time coming up with all sorts of creative ideas to get the national press to take notice of the books we published – I arranged a themed launch party which was attended by African royalty, I created a brand new website for the company, I designed adverts that appeared on the London underground and I worked on books by the Archbishop of Canterbury. After a year and a half I knew that I definitely wanted to stay working in book publicity but move to a larger, more commercial company. I joined Piatkus, and three months later they were bought by the Little, Brown Book Company. I have since worked my way up to Press Officer, working mainly on the Sphere imprint.

Book Cover: Jumping In Puddles by Claire Allan

Posted on March 3rd, 2010 by Chloe

The lovely Claire Allan has sent us a real exclusive today… the brand new cover for her paperback release of Jumping in Puddles! I read this book a few months ago and absolutely loved it, so I can’t tell you enough to go out and grab a copy when it’s released in paperback on May 26th! While I love the cartoony cover of the original release, this one is a little more eye-catching and grown up. It really is a fantastic read, and here’s the synopsis:

“When Detta O’Neill returns to Rathinch - a village in Donegal - she is determined to make a difference. Bringing together four lone parents for a support group which has the old biddies of the village scandalised, she tries her best to build bridges and forge friendships among her charges. Niamh Quigley’s dream of a perfect life in the country was cut cruelly short with the death of her husband Seán. A woman on the verge of meltdown but with a kitchen island you might just kill for she has to find her way again without the man she never thought could hurt her. Ruth Byrne was left high and dry when her husband ran off with a younger woman. But could his desertion have been a blessing in disguise for Ruth and her children? Liam Dougherty doesn’t think so. His wife is the younger woman in question and he would do anything to win her back … or would he? Which leaves teen mum Ciara Boyle. Everyone is just dying to know who the father of her child is, but does she have a good reason for keeping her secret to herself? Apart from being parents, can the group find anything in common? Can they find happiness and confidence again? And can Detta really make the difference she wants to make?”

Or b) fail miserably to bury your feelings and repeatedly act like an incompetent fool in front of him? In Lulu’s case, it’s a bit of both. When she meets Charles, a handsome and sophisticated actor, he seems like the perfect catch – until she finds out about the wife and children. But when Lulu and Charles end up away on location together, sparks fly and suddenly everything gets complicated… Lulu tries to confide in Alice, her twin sister and best friend, but she’s too distracted by her new relationship with gorgeous but rage-filled Richard. Author Article: Me & My Novels by Sharon Owens

Posted on February 27th, 2010 by Leah

After enjoying her latest book, The Seven Secrets of Happiness, we were told that Sharon Owens would like to write an author article for the site where she discusses what it’s like not to conform to your typical author-ly stereotype. Enjoy!

People sometimes say they are very surprised when they meet me for the first time because they’ve been expecting a more mature lady with bouffant hair, kitten heels and a floral jacket. And they’ve also been expecting a very maternal sort of character with bags of advice on love and relationships, and cookery tips.

And then I turn up in my Dr Martens boots, Morrissey T-shirt, skinny jeans and poker-straight hair, and order a pint of lager. What can I say? I’m 41 but my greatest passion in life is rock, Punk and indie music. I love listening to German rockers Rammstein at full volume and I love the super-kooky Yeah Yeah Yeahs though my heart will always belong to Morrissey. The sound of his singing calms my soul. I’m not a foodie either, preferring a plain old cheddar sandwich to most gourmet food, and I wouldn’t know a good bottle of wine from a bottle of Sarson’s vinegar. I am a confirmed romantic though and I’ve been in love with my husband Dermot since 1984. As for the relationship advice: if it doesn’t feel right then it probably isn’t.

I was born in Northern Ireland in 1968 and grew up in the small market town of Omagh during the worst years of the Troubles but luckily my rebellious nature saved me from becoming too obsessed with it all. To this day I refuse to be told how to vote, where to live, where to worship and who I should socialise with. I take people as I find them, regardless of their status or background, and hopefully they do the same for me. I like being an individual and it annoys me when I hear people talking about “two communities living side-by-side”. We’re all just one great big human community, aren’t we?

I suppose I’m a bit wary of national culture generally. I much prefer the international cultures of art, sculpture, printmaking, poetry, literature, music and fashion. Those are the mediums that unite people. I believe absolutely in freedom of speech; there are so many means of self-expression that aggression of any kind is simply unnecessary in my book. As for my novels, well, I do enjoy a gentle love story. Yes, I love loud rock music but I don’t like horror films, gratuitously gory thrillers or tedious 1,000-page whodunits. I like a bit of escapism when I curl up in bed with a book. I like a bit of life experience, a saucy scene or two, plenty of laughs and a happy ending. So those are the sort of books I write.

I don’t feel embarrassed about being described as a chick-lit author. The rebel in me rather enjoys being a chick-lit author who owns original vinyl records by The Clash and XTC. My style icons are Morrissey, Margaret Rutherford as Miss Marple, and grown-up Goth couple Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter. My favourite author is Janet McNeill. I write every book to the best of my ability and then I send them out into the world, like butterflies. Writing isn’t just therapy for me; I write for the enjoyment of readers, romantics, rebels and bookworms everywhere.
