Chick Flick Tuesday: Clueless

One of my favourite ever films is Clueless. It was released in 1995 and became a sleeper hit (something that gains unexpected recognition). I watched it years ago and I absolutely loved it. It’s a perfect teen movie and has aged surprisingly well. Cher’s “whatever” catchphrase is legendary and all of the actresses did a fantastic job. Alicia Silverstone was stunning as Cher and it surprises me even now to see just how young Brittany Murphy looked back then! It is a must-watch for any chick flick fan and if you haven’t seen it, you ought to go and buy it on Amazon for only £2.99, which would be money VERY well spent!

Cher Horowitz and her friend Dionne, two of the most popular sophomores in school, play matchmakers for two teachers. Inspired by their success, Cher takes under her wing Tai, a “clueless” transfer student. While trying to make an advantageous match for Tai, Cher attempts to find a boyfriend of her own. Several misfires take place, due to poor communication, before she finds the Baldwin of her dreams. (Taken from IMDB.com)

Chick Flick Tuesday: Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights

This week, I’ve been reading Michelle Jackson’s novel One Kiss in Havana and it’s really made me think of one movie in particular, and that’s Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights. It’s a prequel (well, meant to be) to the original Dirty Dancing movie starring Patrick Swayze, but this one is set in Cuba, and follows Katy Miller’s move there from America and her adjusting to her new lifestyle. There is some great music (I bought the soundtrack after watching it!) and the dancing is brilliant too so for me it’s a must-see summer movie!

Arriving in Cuba just before the revolution breaks out, 18 year old Katey Miller meets a local boy who instantly notices her dancing abilities and pursues her. Her strict parents immediately disapprove of the relationship, forcing the pair to meet in secret at a Havana nightclub. The pair practice their dance steps in preparation for the prestigious national dance competition. But with Castro’s ascent to power, Americans are being forced to leave the country. Will Katy be able to stay, even if she wants to?

Chick Flick Tuesday: Wimbledon

After a brief hiatus last week as we were rather busy, Chick Flick Tuesday is back this week with Wimbledon! No, not the annual tennis championship that’s currently happening in, er, Wimbledon of course, but the movie which depicts a fictional Wimbledon starring Kirsten Dunst and the brilliant Paul Bettany! There’s something wonderfully British about this movie, even if you aren’t a tennis fan you can enjoy it because it’s more than just a tennis film. There’s a great little love story going on, along with some great comedy, and Dunst and Bettany make a really great team on-screen. I was on the edge of my seat come the end even though I knew it was just a film, but it was so well done you felt like it was real tennis! It’s a perfect film for this hot weather to sit and have a lovely big bowl of strawberries while you watch, and enjoy a fab movie!

“Peter Colt (Paul Bettany) is a 31-year-old Englishman who was once ranked 11th in the world, but has now dropped to a pathetic 119th. Realising that his days are numbered, Peter intends to retire from the game after playing in one final Wimbledon. But when he accidentally walks into the hotel room of rising American star Lizzie Bradbury (Kirsten Dunst), sparks begin to fly and Peter begins to find his touch on the court once again. Unfortunately for Peter, Lizzie’s overbearing father, Dennis (Sam Neill), is well aware that Lizzie’s game suffers when she is distracted by love, and he bans the two from seeing each other. This doesn’t bode well for Peter, who is about to play in the final against cocky American superstar Jake Hammond (Austin Nichols). Not to mention the fact that Peter has the hopes of an entire nation riding on his shoulders.”

Chick Flick Tuesday: Waitress

This week I’ve chosen indie flick Waitress as my ‘Chick Flick Tuesday’ pick. I first watched this film about a year and a half ago now, and I was blown away by the great storyline of a young waitress/pie maker struggling in her unhappy marriage, and falling in love with someone else. Keri Russell stars as the confused Jenna, and I found her mesmerising on screen. There are a few dark bits in this movie, but they are outweighed by the rest of it which is funny, warm hearted and just a brilliant movie to watch. I know this is shown occasionally on the Film4 channel, so if you get a chance, do give it a watch!

Set in a small Southern town, her third picture revolves around waitress Jenna (Felicity‘s radiant Keri Russell), who works at Joe’s Pie Diner (Joe is played by Andy Griffith). Jenna is the pastry genius who makes Joe’s joint shine. Her co-workers include the forthright Becky (Cheryl Hines, Curb Your Enthusiasm) and insecure Dawn (Shelly). All three have man trouble, but Jenna has it the worst. Her husband, Earl (Jeremy Sisto, Six Feet Under), treats her like a piece of property. When she finds out she’s pregnant, Jenna fears she’ll be stuck with him forever. Then, she develops a crush on her married obstetrician, Dr. Pomatter (Nathan Fillion, Serenity). With the aid of her fanciful confections, like peachy keen tarts, their flirtation develops into a full-blown affair. It appears to be a no-win situation, but Shelly finds an empowering way to bring this bittersweet story to a close.

Chick Flick Tuesday: An Ideal Husband

An Ideal Husband is by far my favorite Chick Flick and oddly enough it was originally presented to me by my husband who was studying the book in one of his literature classes at the time. To begin with I should say that I am a huge fan of almost anything Oscar Wilde has written, including, An Ideal Husband. The book version of what Wilde wrote is perfect and it’s hard to imagine anything being able to improve on what he put forth in the book, but the movie truly is incredible. What more can I say than Rupert Everett? His character alone makes the movie worth watching, not to mention the supporting cast that includes some very big names in the business. Everything about this movie makes you laugh and giggle from the snarky commentary to the tremendous one-liners delivered by Everett. But by the end you are absolutely in love. Perfect.

Sexy leading man Rupert Everett heads an acclaimed all-star cast in this wonderfully witty story of decadence, romance, and scandal! Sir Robert is a highly respected politician whose spotless reputation is the pride of his beautiful wife (Cate Blanchett ) and adoring sister (Minnie Driver). But when an old acquaintance (Julianne Moore) threatens to reveal a dark secret from Robert’s past, only his womanizing party-loving best friend Goring (Everett) is scheming and dishonest enough to come to his aid.”

Chick Flick Tuesday: Miss Congeniality

This week I’ve gone back a few years to 2000 to pick our Chick Flick title for this week. I was reading an article about the lovely Sandra Bullock, and was reminded of her fantastic comedy movie Miss Congeniality. I first saw it at its first DVD release, but it is a movie I can watch again and again, knowing it’s always going to make me laugh, and I never get bored of it either! Sandra is perfect as tomyboy FBI Agent Grace Lou Freebush, and its a fab one for when you want a night in with a funny and light-hearted film!

“Sandra Bullock stars as a bumbling female FBI agent assigned to go undercover as a participant in the Miss United States beauty pageant when it is discovered that one of the contestants is being targeted for murder. Benjamin Bratt leads the undercover team, while also playing the reluctant love interest. Candice Bergen and William Shatner manage the pageant and hire Michael Caine to turn Bullock from rough and tumble agent to stunning beauty queen. The physical transformation is impressive, although the klutzy personality remains. Everything seems to be fine once the killer is suddenly caught, but Bullock suspects there is more to this story, and the truth eventually unfolds with an unexpected twist.”

Chick Flick Tuesday: The Time Traveller’s Wife

Chick Flick Tuesday highlights the best chick flicks in the movie world as well as bringing you news on upcoming chick flick releases as well as letting you all know about which chick lit books are being made into chick flick movies!

This week I have chosen a film that I saw this weekend, and was surprised by. I’ve picked The Time Traveller’s Wife which was released in 2009, and is based on the book by Audrey Niffenegger. I read this book a few years ago and loved it, so I was a bit worried when they said they were going to be taking it and making it into a movie. I tend to dislike book to movie adaptations as I feel they never capture the essence of the book well enough (even the Harry Potter films aren’t quite right in my opinion!) so I was curious to see if this would work.

It does - but it’s not like the book. The book was very deep, the relationship between Clare and Henry was complex and on many levels, yet it didn’t feel this way in the movie at all. However, if you haven’t read the book then I think you’ll love this one as a love story because it delivers on this. I defy you not to cry when you watch this film, I certainly shed a tear in parts, and it’s certainly an emotional movie. It doesn’t have that special something the book has that made it stand out, but its still a good watch for an evening in with the one you love!

Clare (Rachel McAdams) has been in love with Henry (Eric Bana) her entire life. She believes they are destined to be together, even though she never knows when they will be separated.

Henry is a time traveler - cursed with a rare genetic anomaly that causes him to live his life on a shifting timeline, skipping back and forth through his lifespan with no control. Despite the fact that Henry’s travels force them apart with no warning, Clare desperately tries to build a life with her one true love.

Fantastic sexual chemistry between a fully-clothed Kelly McGillis and Harrison Ford.

Chick-flick in corsets. Wonderfully wicked and clever.

The film that brought a whole new meaning to a ‘kitchen sink drama’.
