Chick Flick Tuesday: Marley and Me

This week I’ve chosen the fabulous Marley and Me as our Chick Flick Tuesday. I first saw this film quite a while ago but managed to watch it again recently and it brought back what a lovely, and VERY emotional film it is. It stars Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson as married couple John and , who have a dog called Marley. The film showcases their life with Marley, as well as their own struggle to become parents, and have careers and all the things that happen to couples through the years. It’s very emotional, often made me cry and the ending is quite heart-breaking but it is certainly one of the films you have to watch because it’s really good. Aniston is very likeable in this one, but Owen Wilson totally steals the show for me, he’s just perfect in this. Eric Dane (McSteamy from Grey’s Anatomy!) also makes a good appearance in this as Wilson’s best friend. I’d definitely recommend this film, but make sure you have the tissues handy!!

Based on the hit memoir by John Grogan, Marley and Me chronicles the relationship of John (Owen Wilson) and Jen (Jennifer Aniston) as they face the challenges of marriage and work to start a family. By their side is their beloved dog, Marley, who can chew through drywall, got kicked out of obedience school, and never met a leg he didn’t like. The cute pup’s antics come to signify the unexpected challenges that everyone faces in adulthood, and the film is ultimately a paean to unconditional love; others may see Marley as the ‘world’s worst dog’, but throughout it all, he proves to be the couple’s most faithful friend.”

Chick Flick Tuesday: Valentine’s Day

Sometimes my DVD rental service sends me things which aren’t on my list which can be a pain if they send me something off the wall but I was actually pretty pleased when I received Valentine’s Day from them. I’m not usually too keen on huge cast movies because there usually seems to be too much going on, but when I put it on, I found myself really enjoying it and loving the huge names within the film as well. Expect to see Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Garner, Taylor Lautner (for all you Team Jacob fans!), Patrick Dempsey and more, so it really is a bit of a Hollywood ‘who’s who’ at the moment. The film follows one Valentine’s Day for all the characters of the movie, shows how their lives all intertwine without knowing it, and the ups and downs of love for them all. It’s a very sweet movie, and a great one to watch with the one you love or your best friends. It’s been slated a lot by critics, but if you can just sit and enjoy it for what it is; a sweet, romantic and funny movie, then you should enjoy it too!

“More than a dozen Angelenos navigate Valentine’s Day from early morning until midnight. Three couples awake together, but each relationship will sputter; are any worth saving? A grade-school boy wants flowers for his first true love; two high school seniors plan first-time sex at noon; a TV sports reporter gets the assignment to find romance in LA; a star quarterback contemplates his future; two strangers meet on a plane; grandparents, together for years, face a crisis; and, an “I Hate Valentine’s Day” dinner beckons the lonely and the lied to. Can Cupid finish his work by midnight?”

Chick Flick Tuesday: Confessions of a Shopaholic

Due to it being ‘Sophie Kinsella Week’ here on Chicklitreviews.com, it can’t be any other movie for Chick Flick Tuesday than Confessions of a Shopaholic! The film is of course based on the first ever Shopaholic book by Sophie Kinsella, Confessions of a Shopaholic, and has had fans divided over it ever since it was released a few years ago!

Chloe: Personally, I quite enjoyed it, it was funny and kept me amused, but I think Hugh Dancy as Luke Brandon was miscast, and that it could have been a lot better! However, people who haven’t read the book will probably enjoy it (I know quite a few of these people who have really liked it), and it’s a fun enough watch! Whether you have loved or hated the film - do comment and let us know! - it was a long time coming for fans of the book, and I for one am glad it happened!

Leah: I actually didn’t like the movie. I was so much looking forward to it and I had such high expectations that I was just incredibly disappointed with the outcome. I just don’t understand why they decided to make Becky an American. It didn’t work for me, not when Becky is quintessentially British. I also felt Hugh Dancy was wildly mis-cast as Luke Brandon. Does he really look like someone who could be CEO of a huge company? No, I didn’t think so. They needed someone a bit stronger who could have a bit more of a force in the film, someone in the mold of David Boreanaz. For me, it was ruined the moment they decided to make it into a run-of-the-mill American chick flick.

Danielle: To be honest, I quite disliked this version of one of my favorite books ever. Being an American, I actually quite like British films and literature, and though I’m not opposed to “American” films I wish they would have stuck with the “British” feel from the book. In that way it seemed to lack a bit in the romance department and lean a bit too heavily on campy-humor. It was definitely still a very fun film, but if you have to choose, I’d say go with the book!

“Rebecca Bloomwood just hit rock bottom - but she’s never looked better! She has a fabulous flat in New York’s trendiest neighborhood, a troupe of glamorous socialite friends, and a closet brimming with the season’s must-haves. The only trouble is that she can’t actually afford any of it.

Her job writing for a financial magazine not only bores her to tears, it doesn’t pay much at all. Hounded by letters from her credit card company Becky tries cutting back; she even tries making more money. But none of her efforts succeeds.

Finally a story arises that Becky actually cares about, and her front-page article catalyses a chain of events that will transform her life and the lives of those around her forever.”

Chick Flick Tuesday: Just Like Heaven

I am a huge Reese Witherspoon fan; after seeing Legally Blonde, I’ve tried to see every other film she’s starred in. One of my favourite movies of hers (of many) is the fantastic Just Like Heaven. It’s a bit of a magical romantic comedy (a bit like watching a Cecelia Ahern novel) and both Reese and Mark [Ruffalo] are fantastic in their roles and they have pretty good chemistry together too. It always makes me smile when I watch the film and it’s definitely one for the romantics out there!

Shortly after David Abbott (Mark Ruffalo) moves into his new San Francisco digs, he has an unwelcome visitor on his hands: winsome Elizabeth Martinson (Reese Witherspoon), who asserts that the apartment is hers — and promptly vanishes. When she starts appearing and disappearing at will, David thinks she’s a ghost, while Elizabeth is convinced she’s alive. Their quest for the truth ultimately leads to love in this spectral romantic comedy.

Eat Pray Love, the book by Elizabeth Gilbert is a huge hit in the US (in part due to Oprah’s involvement and love of the book) and the movie release (Aug. 13th) is one of the most anticipated releases of the year. Starring Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem the journey of Elizabeth Gilbert as she travels from Italy, India and Bali is captured on film. I for one am hoping the movie is drastically better than the book, as I wasn’t a huge fan of Gilbert’s constant self-indulgent practices, but I am a big Julia Roberts fan. So, have you seen it already? Are you planning to or is this one not for you? Why or why not?

Release Dates: US - 13 August and in the UK - 24 September. More release dates can be found here.

Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) had everything a modern woman is supposed to dream of having - a husband, a house, a successful career - yet like so many others, she found herself lost, confused, and searching for what she really wanted in life. Newly divorced and at a crossroads, Gilbert steps out of her comfort zone, risking everything to change her life, embarking on a journey around the world that becomes a quest for self-discovery. In her travels, she discovers the true pleasure of nourishment by eating in Italy; the power of prayer in India, and, finally and unexpectedly, the inner peace and balance of true love in Bali. Based upon the bestselling memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert, proves that there really is more than one way to let yourself go and see the world.

Chick Flick Tuesday: The Devil Wears Prada

This is by far one of my favorite movies, Chick Flick or otherwise. The story of a young girl just starting her career as a journalist who ends up with one of the heaviest hitting fashion icons of our time. It’s been said that the main character, Miranda Priestly was loosely based the head of Vogue Anna Wintour and Meryl Streep plays the part perfectly. I’m sure we could all relate to the hopes of going from frumpy to sheik even if it means sacrificing a little bit of time. Although, I’m not sure I’d be willing to sacrifice my integrity, something Andy learns after spending some time with her new mentor. The Devil Wears Prada is one you don’t want to miss!

For those of you who may not know this the author of the book version of The Devil Wears Prada, Lauren Weisberger, also has a new book out titled Last Night at Chateau Marmont, which we recently featured here. Definitely one to pick up for fans!

Based on the hilarious best-selling novel, this sinfully funny movie starring Academy Award(r) winner Meryl Streep* and Anne Hathaway is “sensationally entertaining in every way” (maxim). As assistant to impossibly demanding New York fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly (Streep), young Andy Sachs (Hathaway) has landed a job that “a million girls would die for.” Unfortunately, her heaven-sent appointment as Miranda’s personal whipping girl just might be the death of her!

Chick Flick Tuesday: Maid in Manhattan

This week takes us back 7 years to 2003, and the film Maid in Manhattan. I know most people dislike Jennifer Lopez but I really love her in this film and think it’s such a sweet one to watch, and very heart-warming! Lopez plays the loveable Marisa, a single mum working as a cleaner at a hotel when a case of mistaken identity leads her to fall in love with someone who she is way out of her league. The film also stars the late Natasha Richardson as an eccentric guest at the hotel, and she gives a great performance. Overall, it’s a fun and sweet watch, and the little boy that plays Lopez’s son is super adorable too! I love it!

Marisa Ventura is a single mother born and bred in the boroughs of New York City, who works as a maid in a first-class Manhattan hotel. In a case of mistaken identity, Marisa meets Christopher Marshall (Ralph Fiennes), the heir to a political dynasty, who believes that she is a guest at the hotel. Fate throws the unlikely pair together for a magical night of romance. But when Marisa’s true identity is revealed, the two find that they are worlds apart, even though the distance separating them is just a subway ride away. Can they find a way to overcome their differences and live happily ever after?”

Chick Flick Tuesday: Legally Blonde

This week I’ve chosen Legally Blonde for our Chick Flick pick as it’s another of my favourites. It’s definitely a must-watch for any chick flick fan because it’s hilarious, it’s romantic and Reese Witherspoon totally wins as Elle Woods. The film is actually based on the book of the same name by Amanda Brown but I’ve never actually read it so I’m not sure how similar they are or aren’t. There’s also a sequel but I haven’t dared watch it yet, I will though because I love Reese Witherspoon. She shines as Elle Woods and makes Legally Blonde a must watch!

In the sharply funny LEGALLY BLONDE, Reese Witherspoon gives a glittering performance as Elle Woods, the natural blonde sorority queen who enrolls at Harvard Law School. When she first appears, Elle seems to be no more than the bright cousin of CLUELESS’s Alicia Silverstone. Expecting her boyfriend Warner Huntington III (Matthew Davis) to propose, she is mortified when instead he says he needs somebody serious as his wife. When Elle discovers Warner’s brother is engaged to a law student, she decides to go to Harvard. She studies for the LSATs, submits a video essay-in which she appears in a sequined bikini-and, miraculously, is accepted. At first, Elle is rebuked by Professor Stromwell (Holland Taylor) and is the target of snide comments from other students. But, gradually, it becomes clear that Elle is no fish out of water-she is smarter, more driven, and more likely to survive in the rarefied Harvard atmosphere than anyone else. Witherspoon gets fine support from Selma Blair as Warner’s new fiancee, Jennifer Coolidge as a beautician, Victor Garber as an unscrupulous professor, Ali Larter as a client from Elle’s sorority, Holland Taylor, and Luke Wilson as a lawyer fascinated by Elle’s unconventional approach. The smart, witty script is by Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith. The first-time director is 28-year-old Australian Robert Luketic.
