AW Cover Wars: The Department of Lost & Found by Allison Winn Scotch
Allison Winn Scotch is one of the “big” authors in American Chick Lit/Contemporary Women’s Fiction and with good reason. Her books are fantastic, ranging in topics from divorce to politics to health and much much more. There’s always quite a bit of humor and always a bit of romance as well. Which, after making this recent discovery leaves me a tad boggled.
Her debut novel, The Department of Lost & Found has recently been given a new cover, one that goes along with many of her more recent novels like Time of My Life and The One That I Want. It’s gorgeous! I absolutely adore her new cover! But that leaves me to wonder, what exactly were they thinking with the first cover? It does absolutely nothing for me, though it may speak to the meaning of the book it’s not one I’d be picking up under the assumption that it would be a great Chick Lit/Cont. Women’s Fiction book. But don’t let me rain on the parade, I’d love to know what you all think! Which would you choose, the original (on the left) or the new cover (right) that comes out in May?
Update: Thanks to the author, she’s let us know the cover being replaced is actually the paperback that was originally issued back in 2007. I’ve added it to the collection below, in the center. I have to say, I completely agree with Allison and am so excited they decided to replace it with the new cover. Simply gorgeous! Thank you so much for stopping by Allison!
It didn’t start out as the worst day of Natalie Miller’s life. . . .
As the top aide to New York’s powerful woman senator, Natalie’s moving rapidly up the political ladder. She works hard, stays late, and enjoys every bit of it. Then her neglected boyfriend announces he’s leaving. But that’s only the beginning. Her doctor gives her the worst news any woman can hear, and suddenly the life Natalie needs to change is her own.
The time has come for her to overcome her strange obsession with The Price Is Right and take a tough look at the choices she’s made. She’ll start by tracking down the five loves of her life in order to assess what went wrong. And by revisiting her past, Natalie just might discover exciting new paths to unexplored places—and learn how to stop barreling through life long enough to really embrace it.

I love the new cover. It’s fun and bright and really appeals to me. The older cover really isn’t that nice and the re-jacketing is much needed! I’d buy the new cover over the old one all day long, they’ve done a fab job with it!

The new cover grabs your eye immediately. Not sure what blowing confetti has to do with “The Department of Lost and Found” though…maybe that life is full of surprises? I read this book and LOVED it. It’s my favorite Allison Winn Scotch book. The old cover for the book takes a minute to figure out what the image is, kind of reminds me of a bad handbag for a KGB agent. The old cover doesn’t do the fantastic story inside justice, at all. Blowing my horn and wearing my party hat for the new cover. *grins*

Hi guys,
Thank you so much! If you can believe it, this is actually NOT the cover they’re replacing. They’re re-issuing it to replace the paperback cover, which is different than the one above. Needless to say, I am so, so, so much happier with the new version, as opposed to the old paperback. I’m lucky that the publisher did this for me - feel very fortunate to get a new lease on an old book!
Thanks for featuring the book!

I realise I’m alone here but I’m glad to hear both covers will stand
I was really drawn to the book (which I think I reviewed, yonks ago when I was a books website editor) in large part because of the hardback cover. I think it’s really classy and the colours and type are so attractive. And I think it fits in with the theme of the book.
The second cover seems a bit lighter, like it’s picking up on the optimism in the book rather than the dark reality of Natalie’s illness, and it’s slightly more generic. However, it is really pretty and would certainly catch my eye in a shop. I wonder if there’s some kind of age divide going on here, if the second cover appeals to a younger audience?

PS: Just looked for the cover that’s being replaced. Is it this one? http://www.amazon.com/Department-Lost-Found-Allison-Scotch/dp/B002KE49J2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1300572311&sr=8-1
If so, huge improvement!
