Book Review: A Perfect Proposal by Katie Fforde

Posted By Leah on June 11th, 2010

Sophie Apperly is the unintentional black sheep of her family, she isn’t an academic like them, and all they seem to do is boss her around, leaving her with little choice but to do as they please. However, after they send her off to look after her Uncle Eric, Sophie realises her family are nothing but greedy money-grabbers so when her best friend Milly invites her to New York, Sophie jumps at the chance.

Sophie loves being in New York and her holiday gets even better when she unintentionally befriends a spirited old British lady called Matilda. The only person not happy with Sophie’s relationship with Matilda is Luke, Matilda’s grandson because he believes Sophie to be nothing more than a chancer trying to get one over on his grandmother. After Sophie is invited to Thanksgiving, though, Luke is forced to concede Sophie will be there and tries to befriend her, but not without first asking Sophie for a favour of his own…

Book News: A Million Little Mistakes by Heather McElhatton

Posted By Leah on June 11th, 2010

Heather McElhatton’s third book - but only her second to be released in the UK - A Million Little Mistakes is due out on 2nd September 2010 and sounds like great fun. It seems as if it’s going to follow the way her first book went, which means you get to pick your own destiny. Now, I’ve never read a book like that myself but I DO love the sound of it, so I’ll be looking out for it!

There’s one beginning and a multitude of different endings; at the end of each chapter you must make a choice which will alter the course of your life story. Your story starts when you win 22 million dollars in the lottery. After that, it’s in your hands: depending on the decisions you make, you could end up being kidnapped my Somalian pirates, becoming a Vegas show girl, joining a polygamist sect in Salt Lake city or living out your days with a tribe in the Indonesian rainforest.

Book News: Separate Beds by Elizabeth Buchan

Posted By Chloe on June 11th, 2010

Elizabeth Buchan is back on the 2nd September with her new book Separate Beds. I’ve read a few of Elizabeth’s old books which were quite good, so I might look out for this one when it hits the shops. I’m really not keen on the cover though, it’s very bland and wouldn’t inspire me to pick it up off the shelf! Here’s the synopsis:

“Annie and Tom’s marriage is in mid-life crisis. They seem to have everything – a lovely home, rewarding jobs and three healthy grown-up children - but, beneath the surface, all is not well. Beneath the surface lies a secret guilt which ensures that whilst they live under the same roof, they sleep in separate beds. Then, as recession strikes, Tom comes home one evening and drops a bombshell that threatens to destroy everything they have left. Will he and Annie be able to leave the past behind and weather this storm together? Or will it push them further apart? Annie is about to discover that out of disaster springs the faint rays of hope. As her family rallies together, for the first time in years, her home is filled with people, conversation, tears - and laughter. And, little by little, Annie and Tom start to open up to one another about the terrible, painful truth they have lived with all these years. Soon a new, unexpected future starts to take shape as Annie and Tom are offered a second chance at happiness. But will they take it?”
