Book News: Love From Cecily by Harriet Evans

Posted on June 2nd, 2010 by Leah

Harriet Evans’s next book Love From Cecily is out on 14th October 2010 and I have to admit, it sounds like a fairly interesting read. I’ve had a so-so time with Harriet’s books; I liked Going Home but I wasn’t a fan of I Remember You. Due to the beautiful cover, I may just pick up Love From Cecily. Here’s the synopsis:

Natasha Kapoor’s life is at a turning point as she heads down to the magical Cornish coast for the funeral of her beloved grandmother Frances. Devastated by the recent discovery of her husband Oli’s infidelity, time away with her extended family should be comforting. But when Natasha discovers the lost diary of her aunt Cecily, who died in a tragic accident at the age of 14, she uncovers painful and shocking family secrets. We can hear footsteps on the stairs. ‘Take it,’ Tariq says suddenly, as someone gets closer. ‘It’s all in there, you know.’ He looks up at me, tiny black eyes piercing into me. ‘This family is poisoned. They won’t tell you, but they are.’ As a tragic tale emerges from the ashes of history, Natasha must make some life changing choices. Can she forgive her adulterous husband? And how will she cope in the knowledge that the secrets from a generation ago could tear her family apart?

    Author Interview: Martel Maxwell

Posted on June 1st, 2010 by Chloe

Author Martel Maxwell was kind enough to let us ask her a few questions after the release of her debut novel Scandalous which was a fun read. If you enjoy books set in the world of showbiz, it might well be the book for you. I really appreciate Martel taking the time to answer my questions, and we hope you enjoy the interview!

Q1. Tell us about your new book, Scandalous.

Scandalous is a romantic comedy following half sisters Max and Lucy Summers, lifting the lid on London’s showbiz scene.

Q2. The book is set in the world of journalism - how much did you draw on your own experiences as a journalist/broadcaster when writing the book?

Not so much from broadcasting but I poured my experiences as a showbiz reporter (I used to work on The Sun’s Bizarre desk) into Scandalous. One of the best things about the reviews (like chicklitreviews) has been the feedback that’s it offers such an accurate portrayal of the showbiz scene. Piers Morgan, who started out as an entertainment reporter, said it was a ‘waspish, funny and insightful portrayal of the mad, bad world that is Planet Showbiz.’ That’s me showing off! Max is a showbiz reporter and every A-list party she crashes, the things she does for a scoop, it’s all based on the many and varied things I used to do.

Book Extract: The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson

Posted on May 31st, 2010 by Leah

I recently got to read a book that is probably one of my favourite reads of 2010, Jandy Nelson’s debut novel The Sky Is Everywhere. It’s released in the UK this week and to celebrate, Jandy’s UK publishers Walker are publishing extracts around various blogs. Today is our turn, so have a read and I hope you enjoy it! We’ll be reviewing the book on Wednesday as well as launching a competition where you can win a t-shirt, copy of the book and a notebook so look out for that!

The book is about a girl, Lennie, who after losing her sister Bailey suddenly finds herself thrust into the center of everyone’s world, rather than using her sister as a shield. And despite never really having a boyfriend before, she suddenly finds herself choosing between two - Joe and Toby. A unique aspect of the book is the fact poems are scattered throughout the book, so we have not only an extract but a poem too (click it to enlarge). After reading our extract, head on over to http://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/pages/independent-publishers/2003/ tomorrow (Tuesday) for the last extract as well as being able to buy yourself a copy!
