Book News: Fern Britton's fiction debut

Posted on Saturday, October 10th, 2009 by Chloe

Fern-Britton-1238063648The lovely Fern Britton is the latest celebrity to turn her hand to writing fiction! Her autobiography “My Story” has been a huge success, and HarperCollins have signed Fern for a 2 book deal, with the first book due out in 2011. There’s no title yet but here’s the synopsis:

“It follows Christie Lynch, a journalist and single mother who lands a high-profile television job but soon realises not all of her friends, nor her new agent, are to be trusted. Her mother disapproves of her fame and her daughter disappears but salvation seems to come in the form of Richard, a handsome single dad at her child’s school.”

Fern says: “This story comes from my 30 years’ experience in television. Are the characters based on people I have worked with—have any of the storylines actually happened? Readers will have to read the novel to decide.”

Cecelia Ahern signs three-book deal with HarperCollins

Posted on Friday, September 25th, 2009 by Leah

    cecelia ahern

HarperCollins has taken its partnership with Cecelia Ahern to a new level by signing its biggest deal with the author yet—a three-book deal, costing the publisher “seven figures”.

Publishing director Lynne Drew bought UK and Commonwealth rights via agent Marianne Gunn O’Connor. The first book in the deal will be published in autumn 2011, with the subsequent two due out in consecutive years. All three are untitled as yet. Drew said the new trio of titles would retain Ahern’s “magical quality”. She added: “We always try to innovate and push the boundaries. We feel quite passionate about Cecelia.”

Ahern has previously either signed just single or two-book deals. Drew said: “It makes sense for us, and for her, because of the level of commitment. She is such an important author for our list and we want to plan ahead for the next three to five years for her.”

That is absolutely fabulous news. At least three more books from Cecelia as well as her new one, The Book of Tomorrow, which will be out in 6 days time. Cecelia is also due to give birth to her first child in December 2009!

Email Love Story Bought by Orion

Posted on Wednesday, August 26th, 2009 by Leah

Orion has signed a debut author in a two-book deal completed under auction.Senior commissioning editor Sara O’Keeffe acquired the two titles by Rainbow Rowell via Nicola Barr at The Susijn Agency, on behalf of Ralph Vicinanza Associates.

The first of the pair, entitled Flagged, is due out in February 2011. Described as “a gorgeous, sweet, smart and funny romantic comedy”, the novel is set in a newspaper office on the eve of the millennium, at a time “when email was still a novelty”.

During work hours, two young women spend their time emailing each other, discussing “in hilarious detail”, every aspect of their lives. By night, a “shy IT worker”, who is monitoring emails, finds himself enjoying their correspondence a little too much, and ends up falling in love with one of them.

I have to say, it sounds like a fab read and it’s such a shame we have to wait until 2011!

Author News: TPT To Be A Novelist?!

Posted on Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009 by Leah

Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, a self-confessed IT girl, is the latest celebrity to write a novel. Inheritance is due out in the Autumn of 2010 and will be inspired by Tara’s life. The book will look into a world of “private jets, parties and international intrigue”.

It will be published by Pan Macmillan and Inheritance will be the first of 2 books with them.

What I’m wondering is if she’ll do a Katie Price and get it ghost-written…

Book News: Authors in the News

Posted on Thursday, May 21st, 2009 by Leah

    * Hodder has signed chick-lit author Belinda Jones in a move away from her previous publisher, Random House, in a four-book deal for an undisclosed sum. The first book in the deal is currently untitled, but will be set in Argentina, Cuba and Spain and published in paperback in April 2010. The further three books will be published each subsequent year also in April, keeping Jones positioned for the summer slot. Hodder plans to update the look of Jones’ books in the same way that it has previously repackaged Melissa Hill and Alexandra Potter.

    * HarperFiction’s publishing director Lynne Drew has signed Headline’s outgoing editorial director Harriet Evans in a three-book deal. The deal, for “a good six-figure sum”, was agreed with Jonathan Lloyd at Curtis Brown. Evans left Headline this week to work full-time on the novels. Her first, Going Home, was published in 2005. The first book in the deal, Evans’ fourth, is entitled I Remember You and will be published in hardback this November. It is set in Wiltshire and Rome, and described as “‘Room with a View’ meets ‘Roman Holiday’”.

    * Orion has signed a further two novels by Emily Giffin in a “substantial” deal for an undisclosed sum. The first, entitled The Heart of the Matter, will be published in July 2010. The second as-yet-untitled novel has not yet been scheduled.
