Author of the Week: Emily Giffin

Posted on Thursday, July 23rd, 2009 by Leah

This week’s author of the week is Emily Giffin! We’ve reviewed three of her books here on chicklitreviews - Baby Proof, Love The One You’re With and Something Borrowed. Something Borrowed is one of my favourite chick lit books ever. The only book we haven’t reviewed is Something Blue - the sequel to Something Borrowed which is also a great read.

Emily was born in 1972, she wrote her first book aged 6 The Funny Panda’s & The Messy Room. She loved Michael Jackson and even learnt the moonwalk. She had her first kiss in 1984, aged 12! In 1986 she moved to Illinois. In 1997 she moved to New York and passed the bar. Five days after 9/11 she moved to London and started writing Something Borrowed (working title was Rolling The Dice). In 2002 she signed a two-book deal with St Martins Press. Three more novels follow with film rights to Something Borrowed being sold to Hilary Swank’s company. Emily is working on her fifth novel.

As I said, I loved Something Borrowed, Something Blue and Baby Proof. I even liked Love The One You’re With, I just didn’t like Ellen much! I can’t wait for the film version of Something Borrowed especially if Hilary Swank stars, I love her.

Emily’s fifth novel, The Heart of the Matter, is scheduled to be released next year and sounds fab. You can read a sneak-peek of it over at Emily’s website.

Author of the Week: Elizabeth Noble

Posted on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 by Chloe

This week’s ‘Author of the Week’ title goes to Elizabeth Noble. Elizabeth has been writing books since 2003, and has 5 books to her name so far. Leah wasn’t too keen on The Reading Group but enjoyed Alphabet Weekends. I first got into Elizabeth’s books when I read The Tenko Club a few years back, and while it was a very good read, I didn’t think it was anything special. However, that changed for me when I read the amazing Things I Want My Daughters To Know, and her subsequent release The Girl Next Door was also a superb and emotional read. Clearly Elizabeth has got better with each book, and I can’t wait for any more books she may write.

The biography on Elizabeth’s website doesn’t give much away about her, other than she lives in New York with her family. In fact, Elizabeth is a British author even though she lives in America, and this always gives an interesting slant in her books. For example, The Girl Next Door is set in New York and has a leading character who is British, so we get the best of both worlds when we read it! When asked in an interview about what she misses in the UK, Elizabeth said “My ‘misses’ are cultural and dietary – I miss English newspapers on Sunday morning, fish and chips on Friday night, Galaxy chocolate (I love America, but their chocolate is wax), Marks and Spencers, television and my friends.“

There isn’t any news of Elizabeth’s sixth book yet, but as soon as we hear anything we will post it! If you haven’t read any of Elizabeth’s books yet, I would highly recommend that you pick up a copy of either Things I Want My Daughters To Know or The Girl Next Door because they are amazing books to read. They’re both very emotional tear-jerkers that tackle important issues, but they are so well written you just can’t put them down.

Author of the Week: Marian Keyes

Posted on Thursday, July 9th, 2009 by Leah

Marian Keyes is the author of 10 novels, her latest being The Brightest Star in the Sky (which has a gorgeous black cover and sounds fab!) which is out in October. Four of her novels tell the story of the Walsh sisters - Watermelon (Claire Walsh), Rachel’s Holiday (Rachel Walsh), Angels (Maggie Walsh) and Anybody Out There? (Anna Walsh). I assume, at some point, we’ll get a fifth Walsh book about Helen. Her other novels are: Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married, Last Chance Saloon, Sushi For Beginners, The Other Side of the Story, This Charming Man and the aforementioned The Brightest Star in the Sky.

Marian started writing in 1993 - short stories at first before writing Watermelon, even though she said she would never write a novel! More books followed and Marian is many peoples favourite author. She deals with hard-hitting issues including death, cancer, violence, addiction, depression even alcoholism (which Marian suffered with herself) but also manages to insert humour and warmth into her novels which is why she’s such a favourite. She now lives in Dún Laoghaire with her husband Tony (also known as Himself)

Author of the Week: Kate Harrison

Posted on Thursday, July 2nd, 2009 by Leah

Kate Harrison, this week’s Author of the Week, is the author of 6 novels with the 6th, the sequel to The Secrets Shoppers Revenge, The Secret Shopper Unwrapped out in October. Her 7th novel, currently untitled, is due out in 2011.

Kate was born in Wigan but moved around a lot as a child. After working for a news agency in Reading she joined the BBC as a researcher. She then became Education Correspondent until she decided she preferred the producer/director role and moved to London to work at Newsround. She also worked for Panorama before leaving the BBC in 2006 so she could concetrate on writing full time. Read more about Kate here.

Her novels are Old School Ties, The Starter Marriage, The Brown Owls Guide To Life, The Self Preservation Society, The Secret Shoppers’ Revenge & The Secret Shopper Unwrapped. I haven’t read any of Kate’s novels but, like a lot of books, have The Secret Shoppers’ Revenge on my to-be-read pile.

As well as being Author of the Week we have an exclusive interview with Kate which will be posted tomorrow so look out for that!

Author of the Week: Matt Dunn

Posted on Thursday, June 25th, 2009 by Chloe

Author Matt Dunn first came to my attention when I read his hilarious novel “From Here to Paternity” on holiday in Mauritius a few years ago. Since then, I’ve also read “The Ex-Boyfriend’s Handbook” and its sequel “Ex-Girlfriends United” which were both absolutely brilliant! Matt writes books centred around male characters, and the stories are packed with humour and brilliant characters. Here’s a bit about the man himself taken from his website:

“I was born in Margate, but escaped to London and then Málaga (which is in Spain, for those of you who didn’t pay attention in geography class), where I worked as a newspaper columnist and played a lot of tennis. I now live back in London, but spend a lot of time in Spain, where I’m writing my fifth novel and still playing a lot of tennis (although not at the same time, obviously).

Previously I’ve worked as a professional lifeguard, fitness-equipment salesman, and lastly an I.T. headhunter, where my success in re-writing other peoples’ CVs made me think I might have a talent for fiction.”

Author of the Week: Kate Lace

Posted on Thursday, June 18th, 2009 by Leah

Kate Lace is the author of 4 Little Black Dress novels and her 4th, Love Boat, is out in October. Kate also writes romantic fiction under the name of Catherine Jones (her actual name!) .

Before turning to writing Kate was in the Army and got promoted to Captain. She also met and married her husband during her Army days. After falling pregnant and having to leave the Army, Kate was invited to help out on a magazine and that is where she discovered she could really write. Kate has also appeared on University Challenge in 2005.

I read The Chalet Girl ages ago and really enjoyed it. I’ll have to try and get my hands on it again. I love Little Black Dress books so it’s great to have another author whose LBD books I enjoy. Her other novels are The Trophy Girl, The Movie Girl and The Love Boat. I haven’t read any of those but do want to read them!

Author of the Week: Martina Reilly

Posted on Thursday, June 11th, 2009 by Leah

Martina Reilly, also known as Tina Reilly, is one of my favourite authors. I’ve read Something Borrowed, Wish Upon A Star and All I Want Is You and loved all three. Once I get the chance to re-read them, I’ll review them. Here’s a bit about Martina:

Martina wrote her first few novels under the name Tina Reilly before her publishers suggested she should use Martina Reilly. Apparently, it’s to make her books sound more serious. I personally think her new book covers do that perfectly well! Martina is married with children and is also a qualified drama teacher. She is the author of 10 novels.

Her novels are: Flipside, The Onion Girl, Is This Love?, Something Borrowed, Wedded Blitz, Wish Upon A Star, All I Want Is You, The Summer of Secrets, Second Chance and her 10th, out in October, The Wish List. You can read a review of Second Chances here, reviewed by Chloe.

Martina is a brilliant writer and I highly recommend you read Something Borrowed or All I Want Is You or Second Chance. If you’re new to Martina, those are the ones I’d recommend you start with but all her books would be worth the read. Martina takes serious topics and inserts humour into them to make them more light-hearted and they are very easy reads.

Author of the Week: Annie Sanders

Posted on Thursday, June 4th, 2009 by Leah

annie_sanders_images2Annie Sanders, one of our favourite authors, is in fact two people: Annie Ashworth and Meg Sanders and they are a huge hit here at chicklitreviews. I’ve read and reviewed Warnings of Gales and will be posting a review of Busy Woman Seeks Wife after this post. Chloe has reviewed The Gap Year For Grown Ups and all of the novels we’ve read thus far have been brilliant. Here is a small biography of Annie & Meg:

Annie Ashworth and Meg Sanders met at ante–natal classes and bonded as they learnt the benefits of raspberry leaf tea and relaxation breathing. Neither remedy worked but a friendship was born. They started out together with a mission to save the planet from grammatical horrors and badlyplaced apostrophes by offering their services as website content writers. Luckily they were rescued from catatonia (after a very dull foray with a government quango report) by the commission to write a book. A tedious train journey spawned the germ of an idea for a novel and the rest is literary legend...

They are the authors of Goodbye, Jimmy Choo, Warnings of Gales, The Xmas Factor, Busy Woman Seeks Wife, The Gap Year For Grown Ups and their latest release, out in August, Getting Mad, Getting Even which sounds fabulous. Their seventh novel is already up on Amazon due for release in 2010.

To find out how two authors can write one novel, take a look over on their website to find out exactly how they do it! Believe me, it’ very interesting - I always wonder how two people can write one novel.

If you haven’t read an Annie Sanders novel, they are well worth reading. Both that I’ve read so far have been brilliant and I can’t wait to get my hands on the rest!
