Author of the Week: Marian Keyes
Marian Keyes is the author of 10 novels, her latest being The Brightest Star in the Sky (which has a gorgeous black cover and sounds fab!) which is out in October. Four of her novels tell the story of the Walsh sisters - Watermelon (Claire Walsh), Rachel’s Holiday (Rachel Walsh), Angels (Maggie Walsh) and Anybody Out There? (Anna Walsh). I assume, at some point, we’ll get a fifth Walsh book about Helen. Her other novels are: Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married, Last Chance Saloon, Sushi For Beginners, The Other Side of the Story, This Charming Man and the aforementioned The Brightest Star in the Sky.
Marian started writing in 1993 - short stories at first before writing Watermelon, even though she said she would never write a novel! More books followed and Marian is many peoples favourite author. She deals with hard-hitting issues including death, cancer, violence, addiction, depression even alcoholism (which Marian suffered with herself) but also manages to insert humour and warmth into her novels which is why she’s such a favourite. She now lives in Dún Laoghaire with her husband Tony (also known as Himself)
As well as writing her fiction novels Marian has also published two non-fiction novels containing some of her journalistic pieces.
Marian’s novels have also been turned into films or TV series. Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married was turned into a 16-part series, Watermelon was turned into a TV movie and Last Chance Saloon was turned into a French movie. Rachel’s Holiday is due to be made into a Hollywood film and, according to IMDB, will be released in 2011.
My personal favourite of Marian’s is Anybody Out There? and I have it on my pile of books I want to re-read to review. I loved how it dealt with grief and, when I first read it, I had no idea what had happened to Aidan. It drove me mad! A very good read! Oh, sorry, I overlooked that, just looked at the pics, hehe.
Glad AOT was your fav - that’s the first book I’ll be reading on my holiday in a couple of weeks so I’m glad it won’t disappoint (as if MK ever could!).

I’m reading This Charming Man right now, and very much enjoying it! Of the 4 other Keyes books I’ve read, Anybody Out There? was also my favourite. I don’t know when else I have both cried & laughed so much while reading one book. During the first part, I had an idea of what had happened to Aidan, but kept hoping I was wrong..
Looking forward to the new book - Sounds fantastic!
