    Author Interview: Louise Candlish

Posted on Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 by Leah

When I first picked up Since I Don’t Have You by Louise Candlish a couple of years ago, I had no idea how much I would love. I did love it, and it would rank pretty far up on my list of favourite ever books. So when I received a copy of Louise Candlish’s new book, Other People’s Secrets, to read I was thrilled. I’ll be reviewing it on Friday, but we also got the chance to ask Louise some questions, so here is her interview. Enjoy!

    1. Tell us about your latest release Other People’s Secrets?

It’s the story of two families who meet in Lake Orta in Italy. One couple, Ginny and Adam Trustlove, are recovering from a tragedy, the other, the Sales, are having a dream holiday, or so the Trustloves think. Then a character called Zach comes to town and proves to be a bit of a cat among the pigeons. There’s quite a lot of forbidden passion, quite a lot of telling of lies.

    2. At the back of Other People’s Secrets is news on your next book The Homebreaker, can you tell us a little bit about that, too?

It’s about hero worship. A not very heroic man does something heroic and sparks a profound bond between him and the woman he has helped. The problem is he has just married someone else. As with many of my characters, there is a certain amount of ambiguity and so I have no idea whether readers are going to sympathise with the lovebirds or not. I do.

    Author Interview: Tilly Bagshawe

Posted on Tuesday, June 29th, 2010 by Chloe

We have a great exclusive for you today… an interview with the lovely Tilly Bagshawe! I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to put some questions to Tilly after reading her latest book Scandalous which I reviewed yesterday. I’ve been a big fan of Tilly’s books for a few years now, so it was a really exciting chance for me to get to ask her some questions I had been thinking about for a while, so here it is! My huge thanks go to Tilly for taking the time to answer my questions. Enjoy!

Q1. Can you tell us about your latest book, Scandalous?

Scandalous is a tale of love, passion, betrayal and ultimate revenge. It begins in Cambridge, and the action sweeps from there to new York, Los Angeles and Tokyo as our heroine plots the downfall of the man who has tried to destroy her.

Q2. There’s quite a bit of scandal(!) happening at Cambridge University in the beginning of this book, did you know of anything like this going on while you were there or is it complete fiction?!

The scandal itself is complete fiction…but there is plenty of backstabbing, rivalry and of course sex going on in all universities, and Cambridge was no exception. I loved Cambridge though, so I wouldn’t want to slander it too badly!

    Author Interview: Chrissie Manby

Posted on Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010 by Leah

A few months ago I received Chrissie Manby’s new book Getting Over Mr Right and I couldn’t wait to read it as I’m a huge fan of her work. I read it a month or so ago and thoroughly enjoyed it, you can see my review tomorrow in fact. I asked if we could interview Chrissie and here it is for you all. Enjoy!

    1. Tell us about your latest release Getting Over Mr Right?

GOMR is my fourteenth novel. It’s about Ashleigh Prince, a thirty-something Londoner who reacts very badly to being dumped. Very badly indeed. If you’ve ever been embarrassed by the way you obsessed over an ex, you’ll feel much better after reading this book.

    2. Can you tell us about what you’re currently working on?

I’m working on a novel called ‘What I did on my holidays’ which is about a trip to Majorca that goes badly wrong. I am also working on a horror movie. Comedy. Horror. I enjoy mixing things up.

    Author Interview: Belinda Jones

Posted on Tuesday, June 8th, 2010 by Leah

Belinda Jones is one of my favourite authors. I’ve read and loved Divas Las Vegas, The California Club, Cafe Tropicana and Out of the Blue. So I was thrilled when I received a proof of Belinda’s new one Living La Vida Loca a few months ago. I really enjoyed it and you can see what I thought of it tomorrow when my review goes up! I asked Belinda’s publishers if we could do an interview with her and I was so pleased when I was told yes. It is one of the best interviews I’ve done and it’s a fantastic read so I hope you enjoy it!

    1. Tell us about your latest novel Living La Vida Loca.

A reality TV crew follow two best friends - Carmen and Beth - to Argentina, Spain and Cuba on a dance odyssey. As well as the sultry gauchos, proud matadors and rum-flavoured Cubans who provide the romance, there is a very special cameo from one of the original cast members of Dirty Dancing: Miranda Garrison who played Bungalow Bunny Vivian gave me a private dance lesson while I was observing the filming of Living TV’s dance show searching for a new Johnny & Baby in Virginia and she made such a big impression on me that I created a character entirely around her!

    2. Why did you decide to make Living La Vida Loca all about dancing?

I’ve always been entranced by dancers, ever since my mum took me to my first ballet age six, and watching Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing With The Stars just fuelled my obsession. When I was going through a really horrible time in my life, watching all those novices in their gorgeous glitzy costumes giving it their all and bonding so beautifully with their professional partners really captured my imagination and I wanted to put myself in their shoes. So I did - literally! But as well as taking classes I wanted to find out more about the real essence of the dance - hence the trips to their countries of origin!

    Author Interview: Martel Maxwell

Posted on Tuesday, June 1st, 2010 by Chloe

Author Martel Maxwell was kind enough to let us ask her a few questions after the release of her debut novel Scandalous which was a fun read. If you enjoy books set in the world of showbiz, it might well be the book for you. I really appreciate Martel taking the time to answer my questions, and we hope you enjoy the interview!

Q1. Tell us about your new book, Scandalous.

Scandalous is a romantic comedy following half sisters Max and Lucy Summers, lifting the lid on London’s showbiz scene.

Q2. The book is set in the world of journalism - how much did you draw on your own experiences as a journalist/broadcaster when writing the book?

Not so much from broadcasting but I poured my experiences as a showbiz reporter (I used to work on The Sun’s Bizarre desk) into Scandalous. One of the best things about the reviews (like chicklitreviews) has been the feedback that’s it offers such an accurate portrayal of the showbiz scene. Piers Morgan, who started out as an entertainment reporter, said it was a ‘waspish, funny and insightful portrayal of the mad, bad world that is Planet Showbiz.’ That’s me showing off! Max is a showbiz reporter and every A-list party she crashes, the things she does for a scoop, it’s all based on the many and varied things I used to do.

    Author Interview: Emily Barr

Posted on Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 by Leah

When I picked up The Sisterhood early in 2009, I didn’t know then how much I was going to love the book. It’s the kind of book that would undoubtedly make my list of Top 10 Favourite Books (although please don’t ask me to actually give you all 10). It was truly that good a read and it told me just how good a writer Emily Barr is. Since then I’ve read The Life You Want and The Perfect Lie by Emily and they’ve both been great reads. We were recently offered the chance of interviewing Emily and I have to say, it’s one of my favourite interviews ever.

    1. Tell us about your latest novel The Perfect Lie?

It is the story of a woman, Lucy, who has an enviable life in Cornwall, with a partner she adores. Unfortunately, her entire life is a lie. One day she climbs a cliff to rescue a child. A stranger on the beach films her, and the footage ends up on television. Lucy’s life unravels, and she flees across Europe, desperate to stay one step ahead of a menacing figure from her past. It is set in Cornwall and in Venice, and it has a lot of Leonard Cohen in it, as I was obsessed with him, for some reason, while I was writing it. (don’t let that put you off, though)

    2. What are you currently working on? Do you know yet where it will be set?

I’m currently working on a book that is set in Cornwall and Barcelona. It’s the story of a woman who steps into the shoes of a recently dead former wife, and comes to realise that things were not the way they initially appeared. I spent a week in Barcelona doing some research after Easter, and was lucky enough (it turns out) to be stuck out there when the flight home was cancelled with all the volcano business. I made my way home by train and ferry. It was a gift and got me out of a plot hole, so I am deeply grateful to that volcano.

    Author Interview: Tara Hyland

Posted on Wednesday, May 5th, 2010 by Chloe

A few months ago, Tara Hyland released her debut novel Daughters of Fortune with publishers Simon & Schuster. I was lucky enough to read it and found it to be a great read, and Tara was also kind enough to grant us another author interview so here it is. You can read my review of Daughters of Fortune here.

Q1. Can you tell us about your book ‘Daughters of Fortune’ please.

The novel is about the three very different daughters of William Melville, an English fashion mogul. There’s cold, ambitious Elizabeth; gentle, naïve Caitlin; and wildchild Amber. The book follows their lives, loves and tragedies, as they grow from being teenagers to young women. It starts off with the arrival of Caitlin, the illegitimate child, in the Melville household. The product of an affair between William Melville and a shop assistant in the seventies, Caitlin has been raised in secret in Ireland for the first fifteen years of her life. But when her mother dies, Caitlin is sent to live with the father she’s never met and his resentful family. She struggles to adjust to her new, privileged life, and naturally her presence stirs things up in the Melville household, laying the path for events that will have an impact on the family over the next decade or so.

    Author Interview: Allie Spencer

Posted on Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 by Leah

I absolutely loved Allie Spencer’s debut Little Black Dress novel Tug of Love. It seems the Romantic Novelists’ Association also loved it as Allie won the 2009 RNA New Writer’s Award! I loved Tug of Love so much that I pre-ordered her second LBD adventure The Not-So-Secret Diary of a City Girl and I received it earlier this week and I loved that, too, and you can read my review here! Allie agreed to do an interview with us, and here are her answers!

    1. Tell us about your latest novel The Not-So-Secret Diary of a City Girl.

It’s another romantic comedy, this time set in a fictitious bank in the City of London: there are hedge fund traders, financial fraud, some rather nasty loan-sharks, a feckless sister, an especially gorgeous and persistent hero – and a very feisty heroine. It’s a story of stocks, shares and sex in the City.

    2. Are you working on a third book? Can you tell us anything about it?

I am working on another book, but I get a bit superstitious talking about them before they’re finished! What I will say, though, is that it the setting is completely different from either ‘Tug of Love’ or ‘City Girl’ – and the hero is my favourite one yet.
