    Author Interview: Amanda Hearty

Posted on Tuesday, April 6th, 2010 by Leah

I’ve read and enjoyed both of Amanda Hearty’s two novels Are You Ready? and Positively Yours so I was pleased when Amanda agreed to do an author interview with us. Enjoy!

    1. Could you please tell us about your latest novel Positively Yours.

Positively Yours is a book about three very different girls who all have one thing in common – they are pregnant. From high-flying stockbroker Beth, to child-obsessed Erin, and a very un-maternal Grace – these girls are all experiencing the biggest change in their lives. But life is not always what you expect – and pregnancy doesn’t just affect your appetite and clothes size! The girls begin to realize that relationships can become strained, work difficult and the pressure can take its toll. From the first pregnancy test, to the ante-natal classes, from the cravings to the labour ward, we learn how Beth, Grace and Erin all cope with and learn to enjoy their pregnancy.

This book is about relationships – with the three women’s partners or lack of them, and with the people who know them best, their parents. The three characters are very different and they have completely different stories, yet their experiences connect them – from coping with pregnancy cravings and increasing bumps, to surviving work and antenatal classes, to picking cots and baby names.

Pregnancy is a universal theme and all women at some stage think about pregnancy - whether it’s because they want to get pregnant, or don’t, or they just find out they are and have to deal with it. And there is nothing like being pregnant and having kids to completely change your life!

I began writing the book when I was seven months pregnant, so naturally it has a lot of me in it – from my pain au chocolat cravings, to my quest to find maternity clothes for someone as tall as me! I really enjoyed writing the book and from that first pregnancy test, to the birth of their new children – this book follows the characters’ journey and relationships as their whole lives change.

    2. Are you working on book number three? Can you tell us anything about it?

I am working on a new book….but it secret! It’s secret by name and secret by nature!!!

    Author Interview: Ruth Saberton

Posted on Tuesday, March 30th, 2010 by Leah

When Ruth Saberton emailed Chloe and I a few months ago and offered us a copy of her debut novel Katy Carter Wants A Hero I was thrilled as I read the blurb on Amazon a while back and loved the sound of it. I read it in early February and I then asked Ruth if she was interested in doing an interview with us and she agreed. Here are Ruth’s answers and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

    1. Tell us about Katy Carter Wants A Hero?

“Katy Carter Wants a Hero” is about an aspiring romantic novelist who’s trying to juggle teaching, writing a novel and being the perfect partner for her fiancé, James. Katy’s a hopeless romantic (emphasis definitely on the hopeless part there!) and she’s sure that she’s found her perfect romantic hero in James – if only it wasn’t so hard to be the model girlfriend he expects! When her life takes an unexpected turn Katy finds herself out on her ear so decides to change her life. She runs away to Cornwall in search of a real romantic hero. Does she find him? Now, that would be telling!

    2. What are you currently working on?

At the moment I am frantically working on “Unlucky in Love” which is the fourth book in the Hen Night Prophecy Series that I’ve been writing for Little Black Dress, under the pen name of Jessica Fox. Hopefully by the time you read this I will have finished it. I’ve also been finishing my next book for Orion. It’s called “Second Thoughts” and is all about a girl who gets cold feet on the eve of her wedding. In between all this I’m teaching Media Studies and promoting “Katy Carter Wants a Hero”. Phew!

    Author Interview: Julia Llewellyn

Posted on Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010 by Chloe

The lovely Julia Llewellyn agreed to answer some of my questions to celebrate the release of her new book Love Nest. I really enjoyed the read and was really pleased to be able to ask Julia some questions I had about the book, and about her as well. I really appreciate Julia taking the time to answer my questions, and I hope you enjoy the interview!

    1. Tell us about your latest book in a sentence.

Love Nest is about four groups of people in a housing chain, buying each other’s properties, and the reasons behind their moving house.

    2. Love Nest follows a group of people whose lives are intertwined in various ways. How long does it take to sit down and sort out how all these people are “related” to each other before you begin writing?

I’m actually very bad at sorting out anything before I start writing. I tend to just write and see where it takes me. I think I spent about a day with a pad of paper, scribbling down ideas for the characters I wanted to write about. I was intrigued in particular by the idea of an infertile woman wanting her sister to donate her an egg, as a friend of mine was undergoing egg donation. I also wanted to explore the character of a woman whose husband was recovering from cancer who found, contrary to popular belief, that suffering hadn’t made their relationship stronger but had destroyed it.

    3. I’ve read both Love Nest and The Model Wife, so clearly you enjoy writing about relationships and dynamics within those relationships. Where do you get the inspiration for these relationships?

I get inspiration from everywhere, a bit from friends, though you have to be careful not to upset them, more just from reading newspapers, magazines, a lot of fiction and non-fiction. I’m a readaholic, if I’m not reading I get withdrawal symptoms.

    4. Love Nest is set in the world of magazines, rock stars and stately homes. What sort of research goes into a book like this when there are several topics covered in the book?

Before I wrote books, I was a journalist for several national newspapers for 12 years, so I was lucky enough to travel all over the world, interview many celebrities and have all kinds of adventures, which gave me plenty of research material. I still do some journalism so I have lots of opportunities to dabble in all kinds of fields. I just wrote an article about professional dominatrixes, so an ex dominatrix will make an appearance in my next book.

    5. Who were your favourite characters in Love Nest? I loathed Lucinda and loved Karen because of what they both stood for - do you have any similar likes and dislikes?!

I don’t have a favourite character, it would be like having a favourite child. I usually like all of them, however loathsome some of them may appear there’s usually a reason why they’re like that. Lucinda doesn’t behave brilliantly but she’s very lonely, in a strange country and comes from a disastrous family background, so I can see where she’s coming from. But I can see why most people would prefer Karen, she’s a down-to-earth type, put in an impossible position and like most mums she always has to put everyone else’s needs ahead of her own.

    5. How long does it take you to write a book? How many drafts do you go through before you’re happy with your books?

It takes around a year for me to write a book - mainly because my publishing contract demands one a year. If it changed to once every four weeks, or once a decade, I’d probably change to suit that. But I do go through four or five drafts before I’m even remotely happy with the finished product and even when I see them on the shelves I’m always wishing I could have done things differently.

    6. What do you do when you’re not writing books?

I have two girls aged five and two, so that takes up most of the time. I swim whenever I can because a writer’s life is far too sedentary and without exercise I seize up. I try to make time at least twice a week for coffee or dinner with friends, so I have something to write about rather than my family.

    7. What authors do you enjoy reading yourself? Do you have an all-time favourite book?

I love novels published by Persephone, who republish forgotten works of women’s fiction in elegant, grey covers. Dorothy Whipple, who was a very popular novelist in the 1930s, is a particular favourite. My all time favourite book is probably Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy, the Lucinda/Nick plot in Love Nest is a vague nod to it, Hardy’s heroine Bathsheba is vain like Lucinda and messes around with various men without considering the consequences.

    8. What is your favourite thing about being an author?

Only that when I’m reading fiction I can classify it as work! Being an author is hard work and often lonely, with only the characters in your head for company. But it’s lovely to go to a bookshop and have my daughters pick up one of my novels and shout “Mummy wrote this.”

    Thank you so much Julia!

    Author Interview: Jane Beaton

Posted on Tuesday, March 16th, 2010 by Leah

I really enjoyed Jane Beaton’s first two books in the Downey House series Class and Rules so I was thrilled when we were offered the chance of interviewing Jane. Here it is for your reading pleasure, enjoy!

    1. Tell us about your second Downey House book Rules.

Rules is about Maggie Adair’s second year of teaching at Downey House boarding school- she’s come from a rough comprehensive school in Glasgow and has found the refined world of a girl’s boarding school a very steel learning curve. She has to decide whether to follow her head or her heart; to return to Glasgow to do her bit for deprived kids, and marry her childhood sweetheart Stan, or to stay in Cornwall and see if she has a chance of being with the quirky English teacher at the local boy’s school, David MacDonald.

We also meet the head teacher, Dr Deveral, four second year pupils at Plantagenet House- Simone, the scholarship girl; Fliss, the unhappy teen, Alice, who is full of confidence and mischief, and new girl Zelda, an American whose father is serving in the local army base. She stirs things up a bit!

    2. What can you tell us about the third book in the series? Does it have a title yet?

The third book is called Lessons, the fourth Tests. I can’t say TOO much about them yet I’m afraid!

    Author Interview: Dorothy Koomson

Posted on Wednesday, February 17th, 2010 by Chloe

I was lucky enough to get to ask the fabulous author Dorothy Koomson some questions just after I had read a copy of her brand new book The Ice-Cream Girls. I had a good think about the things I wanted to know, and I hope these questions answer a few of your questions too. I really am grateful to Dorothy for taking the time to answer my questions, and I hope you enjoy the interview!

Q1. Tell us about your latest book.

The Ice Cream Girls, my sixth novel, is about two women who were brought together in their teens by a tragic set of circumstances that made them infamous, were then separated and are now about to be reunited. They should be friends but in reality they have a lot to dislike each other for. The book is also about the secrets we keep and why we feel compelled to keep them.

Q2. The themes in ‘The Ice Cream Girls’ are quite strong, and obviously something you would have to research heavily before writing about them. What sort of research did you have to do before you wrote the book, and what effect has it had on you?

Each book I write needs a unique type of research (oohhh, I should really grown-up and serious, don’t I?!) but with all of my books talking to people about their experiences and reading their stories in their own words is the most important element of research. With most ‘issues’ shall we call them, you find that the same things are repeated over and over.

Every one of my books has had a different effect on me. With The Ice Cream Girls, I came away from the book feeling very strongly about the treatment of prisoners and how the survivors of domestic violence are viewed. I always held strong views about those subjects, but when you hear these stories over and over again, you start to feel as if you’ve lived it. I’m incredibly lucky that I’ve never been on the receiving end of domestic violence or been to prison, but with the research I did, I came to realise that almost all of us are only a few wrong decisions away from being in that situation. That’s a humbling – and ever so slightly scary – thought.

    Author Interview: Carole Matthews

Posted on Wednesday, February 10th, 2010 by Leah

When I started doing author interviews there were a few authors I really wanted to interview - months later and I’ve interviewed loads of fab authors but one I never expected to be interviewing was Carole Matthews. I adore her books and I always assumed she’s the kind of writer far too busy for a book blog like us so imagine my delight when we were offered the chance to interview Carole just as her latest book is released. Here it is, along with the most fantastic author photo I’ve ever seen!

    1. Tell us about your latest book It’s Now Or Never.

This is my ‘life begins at forty novel! I think everyone I know has experienced some kind of ‘mid-life crisis’, so I thought it was time to write about it.

The story is about twins, Annie and Lauren who attend their older sister’s fortieth birthday party at the Dorchester Hotel and they wonder why their lives are so different. Why is Chelsea’s devoted husband twirling her round the dance floor while Annie’s husband has gone fishing and Lauren’s lover is at home with his wife and children? There and then, they decide it’s time to turn things around and go all out for what they want, to start living again. The big question is, have they left it too late?

    2. Your next book is due out in September titled The Only Way Is Up (fab title), can you tell us what it’s about?

This was influenced by all the stories of people who have lost everything in the global credit crunch and I wondered just what it must feel like – with a little romance and comedy along the way!

Lily and Laurence Lamont-Jones have it all: lavish holidays in exotic locations, a top private school for their children, Hettie and Hugo, and a beautiful Buckinghamshire home with horses and stables. But their perfect world is about to be turned upside down. Laurence has lost his job and, on their return from holiday, they find their house and all their belongings have been repossessed. Forced to live in a council house on one of Milton Keynes’s roughest estates, the Lamont-Joneses are about to discover how the other half live. And with the help of true friends, a little luck and a lot of determination they learn that when you’ve reached rock bottom the only way is up…

    Author Interview: Melanie Rose

Posted on Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010 by Chloe

Author Melanie Rose first came to my attention when I read her fabulous debut novel Could It Be Magic? and loved it. I was also intrigued by Melanie’s road to becoming published by HarperCollins, and was lucky enough to ask her about her experience when she agreed to do an author interview with us. I’ve recently read Melanie’s second book Coming Home and also loved that, so if you haven’t picked up one of her books yet, make sure you do!

    1. Tell us about your latest book.

My latest book, Coming Home, is my second novel published by Harper Collins and it is passing all my expectations with wonderful reviews and a slot in the top 20 Bookseller list!

I just love to write - and seeing my books in print and knowing people are enjoying my work is both gratifying and humbling.

Coming Home is actually based (loosely)on a true story. The Kitty in the story is my late grandmother, who really did have to wait for her first love to make his fortune before he married her and who sadly lost a son to illness. She really did visit relatives by the sea and almost lost her siblings on the cliff edge, and her stories are what make the characters so real.

The Kitty story is one strand in the weave of the book. I think of writing a novel as compiling a jigsaw with all the pieces fitting closely together to make the finished picture and the pieces just pop into my head and whirl around until they slot perfectly into place.

    Author Interview: Giselle Green

Posted on Wednesday, January 20th, 2010 by Leah

Picking up Giselle Green’s 2009 release Little Miracles, I had no idea what to really expect. Giselle was billed as the ‘British Jodi Picoult’ so I started it eagerly. I absolutely adored it and it won a Chick Lit Award 2009 in Women’s Fiction Book of the Year. Just after I finished reading the book, I emailed Giselle to tell her just how much I’d loved her book. She was thrilled and as well as sending me her other two books (can’t wait to get stuck into them), Giselle also agreed to do an author interview. Now, with her latest book A Sister’s Gift about to hit the shelves, here is that author interview:

    1. Tell us about your next novel A Sister’s Gift?

It’s a story of sibling love, rivalry and the extreme lengths people will go to, to achieve their heart’s desire. Hollie, desperate for a baby, asks her blonde bombshell younger sister Scarlett to act as her surrogate. Unwisely perhaps, as Scarlett is the least maternal woman in the world, but when she finally agrees to help she has her own ulterior motive for doing so. Both sisters are blind themselves to the consequences of their actions till the day comes for payback… It’s also, ultimately, about forgiveness.

    2. Are you working on a fourth book? (I really hope so!)

I’ll definitely be working on a fourth book sometime soon, but I’ve only just sent this one off. Having come to the end of a three-book contract I’m delighted to have a little bit of space to allow the next book to come in gently. Having said that, I’ve got some interesting thoughts and ideas for what’s coming next…
