Posted on Saturday, October 23rd, 2010 by Leah

As Danielle said last week, this week is YOUR chance to win a copy of Hook, Link and Sink Him by Jackie Pilossoph. Danielle loved the book and all you have to do to enter is to fill in the Google form below. I’m afraid the competition is open to US/Canada residents only and will end next Saturday at 12pm (mid-day) GMT.

Anna’s a girl who’s desperate to be a bride. Jeff and Dave are two guys who sprint from long-term commitment. Put them together and the three of them are wildly successful! They’re raking in the cash while helping women HOOK, LINE AND SINK their long time boyfriends into finally taking a walk down the aisle.

Step into the offices of HOOK, LINE AND SINK HIM, where Jeff, Dave and Anna are fantastic at turning bitter, unhappy girlfriends into bridal gown beauties. When it comes to their own love lives, though, it’s an entirely different story. All three are fishing for answers. Anna’s not sure if she’s settling, Dave’s questioning whether his current girlfriend’s right for him, and as for Jeff, he never counted on falling for Anna.

Book Review: Hook, Line and Sink Him by Jackie Pilossoph

Narrated by Jeff, the ultimate commitment-phobe pre-Anna, HOOK, LINE AND SINK HIM will have you laughing out loud, as you see just how far a woman will go to be a Mrs., not to mention the power of true love, and how it can turn even the most fearful bachelor into a happily faithful Joe with a gold band on his left ring finger.

Jeff’s a guy whose not only a commitment-phobe, but a guy who has sworn off girls almost entirely. After a dramatic ending to a high school romance he and his good friend Jeff decide girls aren’t worth the trouble, that is until he meets Anna and her commitment-phobe boyfriend. Not only do Jeff, Dave and Anna go into the business of helping girls “hook” their guys, but Anna also happens to be a somewhat-happy customer. Things go great until Jeff realizes he’s head over heels in love with Anna and she’s scheduled to be married very soon.

This was, yet again, another novel I fell in love with. From annoying the heck out of my husband because of my near constant giggles and not being able to set it down this is a book I’d definitely even read again! Yes, I’d read it again, it was just that good. Each of the characters was authentic and I connected so well with them that I almost didn’t want the book to end. Not to mention the idea of two men who detest the very idea of marriage working with a recently engaged woman to sell marriage to other men, was so original.

One of the main reasons I fell in love with this story was its originality, not only in the story line but more specifically in the point of view. Even outside of Chick Lit, it’s rare to come across a main character who is male and written by a female author who is a purely authentic male voice. It’s a difficult task, no doubt, and Pilossoph executes Jeff’s character perfectly. From the first pages when you witness his heartbreaking discovery of his first love with another man to his struggle to come to terms with his love for Anna, he’s someone you can’t help but like. His character, as well as the others, is one you won’t easily forget and believe in all the way to the last page.

Hook, Line and Sink Him is a brilliant take on Chick Lit you won’t have read before. From a male narrator to a beautifully written love story with lots of laughs you won’t want to put this one down until you turn the last page. Jackie Pilossoph has planted her feet firmly in the field of expert Chick Lit authors and I’d be surprised to not see her succeed in the future. I’m definitely looking forward to reading her future novels! For those in need of a fantastic love story with lots of laughs Hook, Line and Sink Him should be your next read!

Thank you so much to the publisher for providing Hook, Line and Sink Him for review! Make sure to check back next week for a chance to win a copy of your own!

American Saturdays Book News: The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sarah Addison Allen

Posted on Saturday, October 16th, 2010 by Danielle

If you’ve noticed anything about me and the books I like you’ll know I absolutely love anything Sarah Addison Allen writes. My review of The Girl Who Chased the Moon is one of a handful of 5 starred books I’ve reviewed here and now they’ve announced the new cover for the paperback edition. Needless to say, I’m in love! It’s gorgeous and more than accurately portrays quite a few of the scenes of Emily’s enchanting bedroom. I can’t wait to add this one to my collection, though I already have the hardback, it’s just to beautiful to pass up. The paperback will be out February 22, 2026, do you think you’ll pick up a copy?

In her latest enchanting novel, New York Times bestselling author Sarah Addison Allen invites you to a quirky little Southern town with more magic than a full Carolina moon. Here two very different women discover how to find their place in the world—no matter how out of place they feel.

Emily Benedict came to Mullaby, North Carolina, hoping to solve at least some of the riddles surrounding her mother’s life. Such as, why did Dulcie Shelby leave her hometown so suddenly? And why did she vow never to return? But the moment Emily enters the house where her mother grew up and meets the grandfather she never knew—a reclusive, real-life gentle giant—she realizes that mysteries aren’t solved in Mullaby, they’re a way of life: Here are rooms where the wallpaper changes to suit your mood. Unexplained lights skip across the yard at midnight. And a neighbor bakes hope in the form of cakes.

Everyone in Mullaby adores Julia Winterson’s cakes—which is a good thing, because Julia can’t seem to stop baking them. She offers them to satisfy the town’s sweet tooth but also in the hope of rekindling the love she fears might be lost forever. Flour, eggs, milk, and sugar . . . Baking is the only language the proud but vulnerable Julia has to communicate what is truly in her heart. But is it enough to call back to her those she’s hurt in the past?

Can a hummingbird cake really bring back a lost love? Is there really a ghost dancing in Emily’s backyard? The answers are never what you expect. But in this town of lovable misfits, the unexpected fits right in.

American Saturday News: The Love Goddess’ Cooking School

Posted on Saturday, October 9th, 2010 by Leah

Melissa Senate’s latest Chick Lit release, The Love Goddess’ Cooking School is out later this month on October 26th and sounds really great! I’ve never read any of Melissa’s books, but I’d definitely pick this one up if I had the chance, because it sounds like my kind of read! I quite like the cover too, and I’m usually a bit hit and miss with US covers but this one seems to sum up the book nicely!

Camilla’s Cucinotta: Italian Cooking Classes. Fresh take-home pastas & sauces dailyBenvenuti! (Welcome!)

Holly Maguire’s grandmother Camilla was the Love Goddess of Blue Crab Island, Maine—a Milanese fortune-teller who could predict the right man for you, and whose Italian cooking was rumored to save marriages. Holly has been waiting years for her unlikely fortune: her true love will like sa cordula, an unappetizing old-world delicacy. But Holly can’t make a decent marinara sauce, let alone sa cordula. Maybe that’s why the man she hopes to marry breaks her heart. So when Holly inherits Camilla’s Cucinotta, she’s determined to forget about fortunes and love and become an Italian cooking teacher worthy of her grandmother’s legacy.

But Holly’s four students are seeking much more than how to make Camilla’s chicken alla Milanese. Simon, a single father, hopes to cook his way back into his daughter’s heart. Juliet, Holly’s childhood friend, hides a painful secret. Tamara, a serial dater, can’t find the love she longs for. And twelve-year-old Mia thinks learning to cook will stop her dad, Liam, from marrying his phony lasagna-queen girlfriend. As the class gathers each week, adding Camilla’s essential ingredients of wishes and memories in every pot and pan, unexpected friendships and romances are formed—and tested. Especially when Holly falls hard for Liam . . . and learns a thing or two about finding her own recipe for happiness.

American Saturdays Cover Wars: Brava, Valentine by Adriana Trigiani

Posted on Saturday, October 9th, 2010 by Danielle

Released in February in hardback Brava, Valentine by Adriana Trigiani is now coming to the States in paperback with a fresh new cover. The paperback edition coming November 19 features a more whimsical city scene that I rather prefer, not as serious as the first. I’m definitely looking forward to reviewing this one in the near future for an upcoming book tour. Tell me, what do you think? Regardless of hardback or paperback, which cover do you prefer and why?

As Brava, Valentine begins, snow falls like glitter over Tuscany at the wedding of her grandmother, Teodora, and longtime love, Dominic. Valentine’s dreams are dashed when Gram announces that Alfred, “the prince,” Valentine’s only brother and nemesis, has been named her partner at Angelini Shoes. Devastated, Valentine falls into the arms of Gianluca, a sexy Tuscan tanner who made his romantic intentions known on the Isle of Capri. Despite their passion for one another and Gianluca’s heartfelt letters, a long-distance relationship seems impossible.

As Valentine turns away from romance and devotes herself to her work, mentor and pattern cutter June Lawton guides her through her power struggle with Alfred, while best friend and confidante Gabriel Biondi moves into 166 Perry Street, transforming her home and point of view. Savvy financier Bret Fitzpatrick, Valentine’s first love and former fiancée who still carries a torch for her, encourages Valentine to exploit her full potential as a designer and a business woman with a plan that will bring her singular creations to the world.

A once-in-a-lifetime business opportunity takes Valentine from the winding streets of Greenwich Village to the sun-kissed cobblestones of Buenos Aires, where she finds a long-buried secret hidden deep within a family scandal. Once unearthed, the truth rocks the Roncallis and Valentine is determined to hold her family together. More so, she longs to create one of her own, but is torn between a past love that nurtured her, and a new one that promises to sustain her.

American Saturdays Author Article: Glenn Plaskin

Posted on Saturday, October 2nd, 2010 by Danielle

In my recent review of Glenn Plaskin’s Katie Up and Down the Hall I mentioned that he’d been a dog lover his entire life, but waited until he was out on his own before adding a canine companion to his already full schedule. Because of this, as well as the fact he typically writes about celebrities, I was curious to find out why exactly he decided to write a book focused around his dog Katie. Glenn was gracious enough to indulge me and offered his response below, I’m positive you’ll love it and be that much more inticed to pick up his newest novel! Enjoy!

Although I’ve been writing books and articles for 30 years (since I was 12!, of course), mostly about celebrities and artists of great accomplishment-I’ve never, ever written anything at all about my own life-not until now. My new book, KATIE UP AND DOWN THE HALL, is all about how one dog had the power to turn five neighbors into a family. Katie, a blonde-haired cocker spaniel, is dignified, almost regal in demeanor, her canine antics including fashion modeling, using the TV’s remote control, sitting posture-perfect at the dining table (paws delicately around her food bowl), expertly eating corn on the cob, charming celebrities (Katharine Hepburn, Peter Jennings, Bette Midler, and Ivana Trump among them), and racing neighborhood kids up and down the hallway.

Not least important is her special affinity for the elderly, a group of eighty-to-ninety-year-old women (humorously eccentric neighbors) who become the recipients of Katie’s healing touch.

Needless to say, my dog ruled the eighty-foot, red-carpeted hallway in our Manhattan high-rise-the site of dog races, obedience-training sessions, Halloween parades, and a passageway to parties and late-night exchanges of confidences. With an uncanny instinct for responding to the needs of her pack, she merrily trots up and down her territory, pushing open doors with her paws, introducing us to the book’s main characters—Ryan, a little boy who had no Mom, his Dad, John, (who had no parents), our octogenarian neighbors down the hall, Pearl and Arthur, (who had never been able to have children), and me and my dog. What follows is a series of adventures spread out over 16 years covering everything from Hollywood high times to the terrors of 9/11.

Other than Katie’s master, the principal object of Katie’s love, of course, is Pearl, nicknamed “Granny,” who finds herself thriving in a new family-making dinner for everyone, babysitting, and planning holiday events, thus breaking her isolation and rekindling her interest in life.

In fact, much of the action is centered in Granny’s dining room—the family group gathering around her mahogany table to savor her uniquely homespun dishes, the recipes for which are included here as well. Her baking and cooking become expressions of caring and create a cozy atmosphere that glues the family together.

Still physically and mentally acute at 90, (and carrying her own grocery bags), the vivacious Pearl-a Bronx native with a love of travel, theater, gardening, and cooking-turns out to be a fountain of wisdom and practical advice to her neighbors, sharing her “pearls” to one and all.

Pearl becomes my rock, especially at a time when I have a serious accident, and later, when I becomes temporarily disabled. Barely able to move for months, it is Granny who nurses me back to health and inspires me to return to work. She becomes my muse, best friend, and trusted advisor, while I becomes the grandson she never had.

Writing this book was really cathartic, easier than anything I’ve ever done. Why? Because I didn’t have to do any research or interview anyone else! The story of what happened—the movie of our lives-was all in my head, and heart. I wrote it in five months, wanting it to be fluent and personal. I learned three lessons doing it: A family is anything you want it to be; Love Remains, even in the face of inevitable separation, loss, and death; and Open Your Door, a metaphor for opening your heart to your neighbors. After all, in your neighborhood, there’s always a dog that needs a walk, a child that needs a mentor, and a senior who needs a helping hand.

I hope you all enjoy the entire “tail” from beginning to end. And I invite you to visit my web site, www.katiebook.com, to watch the book trailer, which captures the essence of the story. After you’ve read the book, please feel free to contact me and share your thoughts and feelings about it.

    –Glenn Plaskin
