Do Judge A Book By Its Cover: A Reluctant Cinderella

Why we like/dislike it: A Reluctant Cinderella’s cover really doesn’t appeal to me at all. It seems far more something you would expect to find on a young girl’s book, aged 9-12 but certainly not on an adult women’s fiction books. The colours are far too wishy-washy, I’m not keen on the scrolled font of the word “Cinderella” and overall I think it’s a very weak book cover.

Would we buy this book based on its cover? No.
Do Judge A Book By Its Cover is a new feature on Chick Lit Reviews, where we take a look at some of the best (and worst) Chick Lit covers in existence. No synopsis, no hint of the story, just plain old book cover judging, with marks out of 10!

I agree it’s quite young. I do like the font.

Font is ok, but I agree the colours are too wishy washy. And it needs a little more real life detail - the lone traffic light is not enough to put this into the modern world. Also, I want to see just a bit more of the woman getting out of the carriage. I get where the designer was coming from, I just see the result as a first rather than a final draft.

I’m afraid I don’t agree. I love this cover and if I saw it on a book shelf I’d certainly be drawn to pick it up.

I, too, disagree. The quality of the picture above doesn’t seem to really do it justice. I think it’s very cute and I adore cartoon covers, I’d definitely be drawn to it, no doubt about it!

I have read this book the cover is a bit on the young side and does not really reflect the story inside at all

I’m with Michelle, and that’s why I voted it so low. We’re not meant to be judging on the synopsis but my biggest bugbear with this book is that it’s about a football agent. No a bloody cinderella in a coach thing, a football agent and how on earth this cover reflects that is beyond me, which is why it gets 2 stars. For me, a cover should reflect the story, this doesn’t.

Chloe! Breaking your own rules! But I would dislike this cover whatever the story. The Cinderella story is responsible for so much heartache and bad writing. But mostly I hate the shoe. If you’re going to put a shoe on the cover of a chicklit book you’d better make damn sure it’s a pretty shoe.

I agree with bondgirluk, Chloe, you can’t judge it based on the synopsis!
That being said…I think I might be surprised to learn this is a Chick Lit book after picking it up. It is a bit young, though I really love the font. But boy does that shoe stick out like a sore thumb to me! I think if the shoe looked a bit different I might like the cover a bit more. I know…silly, disliking a cover over a shoe. Oh well! The rest is still very pretty.

I think the cover’s quite cute and it would definitely catch my attention on a shelf! I know it doesn’t fit the story AT ALL, but it’s still a book I’d want to own based on the cover.

Before I had read the synopsis though, I didn’t want to read it based on that cover. Only when I had to review it did I pick it up and love it, so I disliked it immensely first, but once I knew what was inside I disliked it more. I also stand by the fact it looks like a child’s book, not an adult’s book at all.
