Cover Wars: French Lessons by Ellen Sussman

A while ago, I made a post about the gorgeous book cover for Ellen Sussman’s debut novel French Lessons, saying how much I loved it and how classy it looked. Well since that cover was released, the cover has actually been updated, and I can’t honestly say I think it’s for the better. They’ve tried to brighten it up with the use of the red on the woman and red of the text with bigger lettering, and just a bit more light and yellow tones used on the bottom half, but I have to be honest and say I still like the muted tones of the first cover! I would definitely pick up the second one, don’t get me wrong, but I’m not 100% convinced it’s a great improvement on a cover that initially impressed me. What do you think?! Old cover (left) or new cover (right)?!

Love it! Like the second version better as the girl really pops from the cover and it seems much warmer. C : ) xx

I think the second version is better. I agree with Carole that the girl pops from the cover. On the first cover, she sort of blends into the street.

The new one is better because it’s brighter, but this isn’t really a cover “wars” because they’re the same! They’re the same cover, only brighter!

The new one is soooo much better. It’s livelier and catches your eye almost instantly! Is there an excerpt for this? xx

Prefer the first and i must say that on a first glance I thought it was brighter. Some parts of the second cover is brighter but I wonder if it is the larger title that makes it look darker to me.
