AW Book Review: My One and Only by Kristan Higgins

Divorce attorney Harper James can’t catch a break. Bad enough that she runs into her ex-hubby, Nick, at her sister’s destination wedding, but now, by a cruel twist of fate, she’s being forced to make a cross-country road trip with him. And her almost-fiancé back at home is not likely to be sympathetic. Harper can’t help that Nick has come blazing back into her life in all of his frustratingly appealing, gorgeous architect glory. But in Nick’s eyes, Harper’s always been the one. If they can only get it right this time, forever might be waiting — just around the bend.

Harper James is your typical no-nonsense kinda gal who lives a modest life in Martha’s Vineyard. She also happens to be a divorce attorney in a flourishing firm. Not only that, but her own sense of romanticism left years before after her own marriage ended quite abruptly. So, when Harper’s sister, Willa calls to announce her sudden engagement to non-other than the brother of her ex-husband she decides she will stop at nothing to put an end to her sister’s foolishness. Things change though when Harper sees Nick again for the first time in years and when they end up driving across country together at the last minute she questions her decisions and possibly even her life. Is she living the life she was destined to live or is there another plan, one she denied for fear of a broken heart?

My One and Only was such a fun and romantic read, definitely one I’d take along during the upcoming summer getaways. I absolutely adored all of the characters, including Harper’s step-mother BeverLee, whom I thought was absolutely hilarious and so completely the opposite of your typical “evil-step-mother”. Of course, from the very beginning I rooted for Nick and Harper. Even though Nick’s character didn’t “officially” make an appearance until about 100 pages into the story, you could feel the connection already. His pull towards Harper made him incredibly endearing and exactly what you would hope she’d end up with in the end. Because honestly, who wants to end up with a husband who calls you “dude” in response to a marriage proposal? (Which is exactly what her boyfriend/fireman Dennis said.) I certainly wouldn’t!

If there was anything that really threw me for a loop in the story it was Harper’s choice of words at times as well as the pacing toward the beginning of the book. From the very beginning Harper uses words like, “crotch”, which didn’t really seem fitting for her personality. Granted, she did not say it all that often, but when it did it stuck out like a sore thumb to me because it didn’t suit her. Also, the beginning of the book took a bit to really grab me. It wasn’t until Harper and Dennis arrived at the wedding site that I really felt pulled into the story, and from there on out there was no stopping my reading until it was done.

If you are in search of great writing, enjoyable characters, unpredictable supporting characters and a wonderful romantic chick lit novel then My One and Only is the perfect choice. Kristan Higgins is certainly an author I’m seeking out in the future and may even be inclined to pick up one or two of her past novels. Take a chance on Harper and her once “one and only” Nick to discover if second chances really are possible, if the hard exterior shell created by years of fortification can be knocked down by true love and make sure to bring along a few tissues. My One and Only is certainly a book I’m positive you’ll love and have to read, especially during the upcoming summer months spent reading by the pool.
