Book News: Fern Britton's fiction debut

Posted on Saturday, October 10th, 2009 by Chloe

Fern-Britton-1238063648The lovely Fern Britton is the latest celebrity to turn her hand to writing fiction! Her autobiography “My Story” has been a huge success, and HarperCollins have signed Fern for a 2 book deal, with the first book due out in 2011. There’s no title yet but here’s the synopsis:

“It follows Christie Lynch, a journalist and single mother who lands a high-profile television job but soon realises not all of her friends, nor her new agent, are to be trusted. Her mother disapproves of her fame and her daughter disappears but salvation seems to come in the form of Richard, a handsome single dad at her child’s school.”

Fern says: “This story comes from my 30 years’ experience in television. Are the characters based on people I have worked with—have any of the storylines actually happened? Readers will have to read the novel to decide.”

Book Review: The Book of Tomorrow by Cecelia Ahern

Posted on Friday, October 9th, 2009 by Leah

ceceliaahern the book of tomorrowTamara Goodwin has always had anything and everything she’s ever wanted in life. At 16, you could say she’s rather spoilt. Not only is she a spoilt brat but she’s also incredibly ungrateful and doesn’t seem to respect her parents.

Until one day, her dad kills himself. It turns out Tamara and her mother are so much in debt that their fabulous house has had to be reposessed. Tamara and her mother move down to Kilsaney to stay with Tamara’s Aunt Rosaleen and Uncle Arthur. Whilst there Tamara happens upon a locked book in a travelling library.

When the book is finally opened, Tamara is shocked. It seems to be fore-telling what will happen tomorrow…

    The Tale of Lucy

Posted on Friday, October 9th, 2009 by Leah

paigetoonlucyinthesky1I don’t know if any of you have noticed but one of the most popular female names in women’s fiction seems to be LUCY. It is ridiculous the amount of books I’ve seen with Lucy as one of the main characters. I begin to think: Can’t they come up with another name? There are millions of names out there!

So far I have 10 books (11 if you count The Chocolate Lovers’ Diet) which have a Lucy. They are: Lucy in the Sky by Paige Toon, Lucy Springer Gets Even by Lisa Heidke, Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married by Marian Keyes, Heaven Can Wait by Cally Taylor, The Chocolate Lovers’ Club (and Diet) by Carole Matthews, The Sinful Life of Lucy Burns by Elizabeth Leiknes, The Secret Life of the Slummy Mummy by Fiona Neill, After You by Julie Buxbaum, My Single Friend by Jane Costello, The History of Lucy’s Love Life in 10.5 Chapters by Deborah Wright.

I’m sure there are some I’ve missed so leave a comment with them in and I’ll add them to our list. I admit that I do like the name Lucy I just find it tiresome after reading so many books with the same main character name! There are also a few authors called Lucy, too: Lucy Diamond, Lucy Dawson, Lucy Dillon, Lucy-Anne Holmes.

Author of the Week: Maggie Alderson

Posted on Thursday, October 8th, 2009 by Leah

maggiealdersonThis week’s author of the week is the fab Maggie Alderson. I’m a huge fan of hers and have read two of her novels: Mad About the Boy and Handbags and Gladrags and loved them both. Maggie is also the author of Pants on Fire, Cents & Sensibility and the recently released How To Break Your Own Heart. I will hopefully be reviewing How To Break Your Own Heart by the end of the year so look out for that. Here’s Maggie’s auto-biography from her site:

I was born in London, brought up in Staffordshire and educated at the University of St Andrews. I have edited four magazines: British ELLE and ES (I was Editor of the Year for that – get me) in London, then Cleo (acting editor) and Mode in Sydney. I also worked on the Evening Standard and the Sydney Morning Herald. Newspapers are my spiritual home. My column in Good Weekend magazine has been running for over ten years and has been collected into three books. I currently live in Hastings Old Town on the south coast of England, with my husband and six-year old daughter, but I move a lot. I have about 150 pairs of shoes and I am currently writing another novel.

Maggie’s writing is hilarious and incredibly readable. Mad About The Boy captivated me and I couldn’t stop reading it. I also thought Handbags and Gladrags was outstanding. I’d wholly recommend you read one of Maggie’s books. If I was you, I’d start with Mad About The Boy - Uncle Percy is hilarious. With any luck, Maggie is working on a sixth book and I look forward to reading those of Maggie’s I have yet to read!
