Book News: Hello Heartbreak by Amy Huberman
Amy Huberman’s debut novel, Hello Heartbreak, is out on 2nd July. Amy is an actress and is engaged to Ireland rugby captain Brian O’Driscoll. The novel sounds like an interesting read:
You’d think twenty-seven years would be enough time to wise up to the rules of love and loss, especially Rule Number 1: Do not, at any time, let him see how much he has hurt you. But no, Izzy Keegan was probably off doing sambuca shots when that lesson was taught. So, starting with public humiliation (that infamous blow-up with her Ex and his new woman … huge mistake), and taking in temporary insanity, rebound sex, and a night in a police cell along the way, Izzy has to make up her own rules for coping with heartbreak.
Luckily she has friends who are there for her through thick and thin (even if ‘doing an Izzy’ is their new shorthand for completely losing it). And she’s got her foot in the door of the film business (though dogsbody wasn’t exactly the job she dreamt of doing). Now, all she has to do is put the dirty cheating love-rat behind her. You’d think twenty-seven years would be enough time to wise up to the rules of love and loss. Make that twenty-seven and a bit …

I really enjoyed Amy’s book. It is not going to win a literary prize but it does what it is supposed to do. It is highly humourous and I couldn’t put it down. I think that Jeanette Crowley of the Irish Times must have a serious grudge against her in light of her bitter review in the IT last week. Does she fancy Brian?! Or is it actress/writer envy? Reviewers should not, in my view, get personal. Amy’s personal life has nothing to do with her writing. Anyway, I am surprised that the IT reviews Chick Lit now…

I really enjoyed the book too, it was really funny and I stayed up until 3 last night reading it even though I promised myself I’d save it for my holidays. I think Jeananne Crowley embarrassed herself with that review in the IT, so Amy Huberman is not trying to be the next Beckett, who cares? I thought it was well written, funny with a few twists and turns that kept me up late at night- a totally enjoyable read.

I enjoyed this book. Its a nice light hearted summer read. Although I do think the author has read to many Sophie Kinsella books as I found the style of writing very similar to that of the Shopaholic series. I know this was her first book maybe for her next she will find her own flair and personal style.

I felt like this book weighed less than paper in terms of personality. It really undermines the female chick lit writers of today.’ Hello Heartbreak’, it really was reading every page. I feel that good talent is neglected for those who only recieve recognition due to their ‘celebrity’ status. What next will they give book deals to animals?
