Chick Lit Classic: Good In Bed by Jennifer Weiner
Chick Lit Classics is a regular feature on Chick Lit Reviews where we highlight the books we feel are classics of the chick lit genre. Feel free to discuss our choices in the comments section!
For anyone who loves Chick Lit Jennifer Weiner should be a staple. She’s written over half a dozen books and Good In Bed was her debut novel back in 2001. All about a girl, Cannie and the struggles she has to overcome a series of events that all starts with her ex-boyfriend’s article about “Loving a Larger Woman.” From her weight issues, to her ex-boyfriend, her parents and more this book had me laughing and crying throughout the entire book. There’s so much more to this book than what you’d think. As someone who’s struggled with self-image problems my entire life, this book was comforting and helped me to realize I’m not alone. Definitely one every reader should pick up!
For twenty-eight years, things have been tripping along nicely for Cannie Shapiro. Sure, her mother has come charging out of the closet, and her father has long since dropped out of her world. But she loves her friends, her rat terrier, Nifkin, and her job as pop culture reporter for The Philadelphia Examiner. She’s even made a tenuous peace with her plus-size body.
But the day she opens up a national women’s magazine and sees the words “Loving a Larger Woman” above her ex-boyfriend’s byline, Cannie is plunged into misery…and the most amazing year of her life. From Philadelphia to Hollywood and back home again, she charts a new course for herself: mourning her losses, facing her past, and figuring out who she is and who she can become.

I love this book. It really describes the inner feelings of an overweight women’s love life and feelings. It was charming and funny. I highly recommend this book!

I’ve been a fan of Jennifer Weiner’s for some time, but I just read Good in Bed within the last year. Jennifer does a wonderful job of keeping the story funny and moving. I often found myself laughing out loud.

Never having read much chicklit, I decided to remedy the situation and bought a bag full of books from a charity shop. That was a couple of years ago and I’ve since become a devotee. This was one of the first chicklit books I read and I loved it so much I’d sneak off to bed three hours early just to read it. On the surface, it’s a tale of a woman getting over an ex, but there’s so much else to it: a commentary on how we view our bodies, the importance of women’s independence, and moments that range from hilarity to moving. I thoroughly recommend it, whether you’ve had a similar experience to Cannie or just want a great read.
