Cover Wars: Wicked Games by Sasha Wagstaff

Posted on Wednesday, May 19th, 2010 by Leah

The paperback release of Sasha Wagstaff’s second book Wicked Games is due out on 8th July 2010 and has had a cover change from the blue hardback cover. I have to say I’m not entirely sure why they’ve changed it - the blue hardback cover is far superior. Don’t you think?

Debonair and dynamic, millionaire Judd Harrington is back at Brockett Hall. With his socialite wife and family in tow, he’s returned from LA a glittering success. But as he stares across the valley at Lochlin Maguire’s beautiful country house, all he can think of is revenge. Meanwhile Judd’s arch-rival has troubles of his own. Lochlin’s record label is losing major talent to an unknown competitor, his wife Tavvy is distracted and he can’t seem to see eye to eye with his son Shay. And, unbeknownst to Lochlin, his talented singer daughter Iris has fallen for irresistible racing driver Ace Harrington out in LA. Ace is under orders from Judd to break Iris’s heart. What he hadn’t bargained for was losing his own in the process. Can he go against his father’s wishes? Or will Judd’s wicked games ruin love’s young dream?

Cover Wars: Class by Jane Beaton

Posted on Wednesday, May 12th, 2010 by Leah

I was a huge fan of Jane Beaton’s debut novel (and first in the Downey House series) Class and another thing I thought was incredibly unique about the book was it’s cover design (left). It wasn’t something I’d seen before so imagine my disappointment when I saw Rules (the second book in the series) wasn’t going to have the same cover. Even worse — Class was re-designed to match Rules and now, instead of looking unique, seem to blend in more with other chick lit books. What do you think?

It’s about love lives …Maggie has been dating Stan for years - safe, comfortable and about as exciting as soggy toast. Can their relationship survive? Especially when Maggie meets David McDonald, her opposite number at the boys’ boarding school over the hill. Every single girl in the school has a crush on him, but not Maggie …yet. It’s about school lives …Two girls. Same form. Simone Kardashian has won a scholarship and is determined to make her parents proud. Fliss Prosser is furious at being so far from home and her friends. As Simone tries desperately to fit in, Fliss tries desperately to get out. It’s about private lives …Veronica Deveral knows how to manage a school. Routine and discipline are fundamental to her role. But Veronica has a secret that could ruin her career ..

Cover Wars: Hello, Heartbreak by Amy Huberman

Posted on Friday, April 23rd, 2010 by Leah

I wasn’t a huge fan of Amy Huberman’s debut novel Hello, Heartbreak and thought it was only OK. I also wasn’t a fan of the cover so I was pleased to come across the new paperback cover which is due out in July (right). It’s tons better, don’t you agree?

Twenty something Izzy is fed up. She has split with boyfriend Cian, the dirty love cheat, and is sick of her job as a dogsbody at film company Lights, Camera, Action. If she was paid to write the script of her so-called life (working title: “Welcome to Dumpsville”) it would definitely not include: baggy tracksuit bottoms and dread locked hair; her flatmate’s ever-present lump of a boyfriend watching everlasting football matches on the living-room TV; ill-advised booty calls; panicky pregnancy tests; and, bumping into Cian and his new squeeze, Brenda, while looking like something the cat spat up. It definitely would include: sleek hair, sleek limbs (come to think of it, more-or-less sleek everything); a Jaffa Cake-eating rabbit called Dermot; a foul-mouthed gran with a heart of gold; Jonathan-absolute-total-ride-Cunningham And, of course…; a girl’s best friend, Gavin. Since real life in Dumpsville is way weirder than anything she could make up, all Izzy can do is take a deep breath and hang in there…

Cover Wars: Daughters of Fortune by Tara Hyland

Posted on Thursday, February 25th, 2010 by Chloe

Tara Hyland’s debut novel Daughters of Fortune is due out on March 18th, but Tara is already having her book published over the Atlantic too in America! Tara posted the cover of her American book on her website, and I thought I could use it for a cover wars feature as I already know which I prefer! The UK one (left) is far superior in my mind, its far more attractive, and I would definitely pick this one up over the American cover (on the right). Which do you like?

“William Melville’s daughters are heiresses to the world’s most exclusive fashion dynasty. Beautiful and rich, they are envied by all. But behind the glittering facade of their lives, each girl hides a dark secret that threatens to tear their family apart. Smart, ambitious Elizabeth knows how to manipulate every man she meets, except the one who counts: her father. Gentle, naive Caitlin, the illegitimate child, struggling to fit into a world of privilege while staying true to herself. Stunning, spoilt Amber, the party girl with a weakness for bad boys; more fragile than anyone realises. As each of them seeks to carve out her own destiny, Elizabeth, Caitlin and Amber face difficult choices, which will take them in wildly different directions. But as old wounds resurface and threaten to destroy the foundations of the Melville empire, their paths will cross again. Because the simple truth is that, no matter how far you go, you cannot escape the claims of family.”

Cover Wars: Bad Money by Louise Patten

Posted on Tuesday, February 9th, 2010 by Leah

I read and enjoyed Louise Patten’s debut novel Bad Money last year but the one thing I wasn’t too keen on was the cover. I really disliked it so I was pleased when I stumbled across the paperback cover (right) the book. Which do you prefer?

Mary Kersey has burst through the glass ceiling. She has a high-profile City job giving strategic advice to banks. She’s the family breadwinner, a loving wife and a caring mother to Gracie, and she struggles to find the right balance between her work and her home life. Her two worlds collide when the Treasury asks Mary to take on a secret role investigating dirty dealings surrounding ever-more-powerful hedge funds. She knows that the company her firm is working with was acquired after manipulation of the share price plus a good deal of help from a dodgy hedge fund. She finds herself torn every which way as husband, daughter, boss, her own conscience - all clamour for her attention. When matters take a dark turn, Mary discovers just how vulnerable she is. Standing between men and their money is a very dangerous place to be…

Cover Wars: The Step-Mothers Support Group by Sam Baker

Posted on Tuesday, January 19th, 2010 by Chloe

I do love it when the paperback and hardback book covers are totally different! It always strikes me as odd that a publisher would significantly change a cover, and it makes me wonder what was wrong with the first one that they felt they had to alter it for the book’s paperback release?! I was shocked to see the difference in cover between Sam Baker’s fabulous The Step Mothers Support Group cover, because the two versions couldn’t be more different! I did love the pink hardback cover (right), but perhaps it looked a little too pink and girly for the story and themes inside. The paperback cover (left) is far more mature, and the image is actually more signifcant that you might realise, but you’d only understand it once you’ve read the book (cleverly done though I think!). After a bit of thinking, I’ve come to the conclusion I do prefer the paperback version but I’m still so surprised the two covers are so different, after all they’re the same story but now look like they tell 2 separate stories! It seems a cover image is getting more important than ever and I think the effort publishers make with their authors covers shows the shift in this, so perhaps the old saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover” is becoming less and less true?!

    Which one do you prefer?
