Blog Post: Jane Costello's Writing Tips

Posted on Monday, June 29th, 2009 by Leah

Jane Costello - author of Bridesmaids and The Nearly-Weds - has updated her website and has put together some important tips for aspiring writers. It’s very helpful and well worth a read if you’re strugging with a novel or even if you’re interested in starting a novel.

    1. Ditch the excuses.
I’ve loads of sympathy for anyone who has a house to clean, kids to entertain, a bedroom to decorate, gym membership to use and legs to wax – because, honestly, I’ve been there. Distractions are (still) my biggest enemy. If you want to succeed, either offload them onto a supportive family member or don’t bother with them at all (apart from the kids, obviously!).

    2. Read.
Lots of the genre of fiction you want to write and become thoroughly absorbed in it. Moreover, change the way you read; analyse the structure of the story, the characterisation, the dialogue. Take inspiration, but never copy.

Author Blog: How Sarah Webb's Books Get Edited…

Posted on Saturday, June 27th, 2009 by Leah

Sarah Webb has written a blog post telling us exactly how her novels go through the writing and editing process. It’s a very interesting read and shows us just how long the editing process is.

Here’s what happens to my novels in a nutshell (the non fiction books are a little different):

1/Finish first draft - now I don’t rewrite much as I go along - so it’s a messy first draft and needs a lot of work.

2/ Print out the whole thing - I can’t edit on screen - I need to scribble - and read through the whole thing - A4 pad by my side, to write on and insert extra scribbled pages into the manuscript as necessary.
I delete scenes/chapters that don’t work, plotlines that go nowhere, delete a lot of descriptive passages and rewrite them in a sentence or two. Work on making each character stronger.

Author Article: "Making A Modern Bonkbuster" by Jo Rees

Posted on Thursday, June 11th, 2009 by Chloe

The author of brilliant summer read Platinum, Jo Rees, has written a brilliant article for us all about writing your own summer bonkbuster. Our thanks go to Jo for taking the time to write it, we hope you enjoy it!

Making a modern bonkbuster - by Jo Rees

It’s that time of year again. The time to choose a book for going on holiday. If like me, you’ve got kids and a busy life, your choice of summer holiday read is an important one. It’s probably one of the only books you’ll read from cover to cover this year.

Sure, we might have great intentions to read something literary or that worthy the book group recommended, but the truth is we want something easy and fun, but exciting and engrossing enough to stop us being distracted from the kids having sand fights and husbands rummaging to the bottom of the carefully packed beach bag for the sun-lotion.

But after years of navel gazing chick-lit, I don’t want to read about anyone like me. I want full on escapism. I want glamour, a huge roller-coaster plot and the naughty bits being very naughty too.
